KH has a bad shape of the fuselage,at least visually, I tried to repair it.I used the container BA-58 Vjuga for anti-radar missiles and racks 1s and 2s.These racks are also for gun pods SPPU-22.

Repaired wings and SPO-15 antenna.L and R ailerons are deflected up by 3 degrees.

I also added the missing part with the KDS dispenser

Kitty Hawk Su-17 is a piece of crap!!!!. It has a lot of fitting problems, in many places instructions are not clear, and for the Gand Finale..... the weapons.... They give you a lot of different weapons in four sprues but lot of them are not for Su-17/22 (  air to air missiles sutiable for a Mig 29 or Su-27 ) and if you want to use the FAB 500 bombs... surprise!!! they are incomplete!!!. This bombs are supoused to have 8 fins but Kitty Hawk decided to give you only 4. The funny part is they have ilustrated in the instructions the 8 fins but on the sprues are molded only four. But hey... you can have all this for ONLY about $80.00!!!!.

This piece of crap should be around $25 -30 because is basicaly an OEZ with Little improvement. (IMHO).

Exactly that one is my opinion! At the KH price I have KP with aftermarkets.A lot of work as well as in the repair of KH.

I used to have the KoPro kit with a couple of the Cutting Edge resin upgrade sets to go with it, which I sold the minute I learnt about the Kitty Hawk kit. Looking back now, I wish I had learnt about Werner (exdraken) and Harvy's build threads a lot early than I did, because I realised that the KoPro kit could be modified a huge lot in order to make it look like the beautiful aircraft it is.

Now that I saw what these two excellent modellers did in order to modify the kit, and compared to the very same side-to-side pictures of both the modified KoPro and Kitty Hawk kits that Harvy has posted on this build thread, I can help but admit to myself that the shapes I was unhappy about the KoPro kit are still there, although all of the effort; namely, the whole forward fuselage section, the angle at which the windshield sits on it, the wrong shape of the winshield itself when glanced from above, the width of the wing chord, glove and trailing edge... It's still all there despite of the efforts of those two excellent modellers.

On the other hand, I admit that Kitty Hawk failed miserably at replicating certain aspect of the aircraft, namely - and the one which bothers me the most - that banana-shaped underbelly. Then it's the shock cone and the fragile main landing gear legs. Painting and assembly instructions leave a lot to be desirable.

Now, the one thing I'm really glad about the Kitty Hawk kit is that they've nailed the shape of the forward fuselage and windshield as well; it shows on the comparison pictures Harvy has posted.

I was always impressed by the beauty of the Fitter, and Kitty Hawk has camptured it quite closely. Of course it's a drag that I'd have to resort to the HAD resin corrections for the shock cone (I'm still waiting to see what Stenka in Cold War Studio comes out with to sort out the underbelly), but I really like the Fitter, and how the Kitty Hawk kit looks like, in spite of all of the issues about fit and engineering.

The KoPro kit may have been cheap to come by, but both the Cutting Edge sets were anything but, yet the KoPro kit was looking nothing like the new Kitty Hawk one. This is something I was able to tell now, several years after I purchased the KoPro + Cutting Edge combo. Perhaps it's going to be the same about the Kitty Hawk kit in several years in future, but this has happened more times than I like to remember: basic kits which I built with the addition of a lot of aftermarkets so that they'd look better, then a whole new kit came out to make you look like a fool with a taste for lavishing your money just because.

Can't honestly agree on your statement that the Kitty Hawk kit is crap - not all all - it's lifetimes ahead of the KoPro kit in a lot of aspects. And as for the missing fins for the FAB 500 bombs, I think that you're not looking well among the sprues. They're there. However, If you consider some missing fins on ordnance and some unclear instructions to be the reasons to dub a kit a crap, then I'd say that your skills as a modeller might be less than basic, IMHO...!

Another little progress. I sprayed basic camo colors.I am building a plane that served to test armament.

The rear fuselage was  after overhaul with extra installation ASO-2V dispenser.

Extra ASO-2Vs were on all Su-17M-4s used in Afghanistan.

Drop tank KH is too small, but the KP model has the correct shape and size.

Decals warning:

If you are planning to use the small yellow data in the kit decals.... forget this ! The yellow print is not solid enough and disappears when you place it over brown o dark green Surface. You will need an aftermarket set for this.

THX, I know! This model needs a lot of aftermarkets :wall:

Can't those tanks go in the #1 and #9 stations, instead of the #4 and #6, as suggested in the kit assembly instructions, Harv?

Yes, I can be under the wing. But it's bad to mark the points. Only under the fuselage is 9 points for racks . :innocent:

:o Oh...??? I didn't get it; meaning that the outermost station under the port wing is not the #9? Aren't there 3 stations under the fuselage?

See the link I sent you to the PM

0 is only for recon pod KKR and missile Kh-28

1r,2r for missiles Kh-25,29 and 58 cannon pod SPPU-22

1s,2s,3 and 4 are "wet"racks for drop tanks

:frantic: Wow, Harv; thanks a lot, my good mate in Slovakia! I'm quite sure that info is going to make clear to me some enquiries I wanted to ask regarding the mods you're making to your Su-17 kit on this build thread.

Awesome, chap; thanks!

Cheers,

I like'll help you with everything related to Soviet aircraft. Many modellers do not even realize they're doing nonsense.
In fact, there can not be a combination of rocket and cannon pods, two different types of bombs. For some missiles and bombs need special pods.
Of course, museums are various combinations, but unrealistic. :D:D
