Shermaniac Posted November 30, 2014 Share Posted November 30, 2014 (edited) Been off the scene for a while sorting things out following my Redundancy (a good thing actually!) So, here we go with a new build using the recent HobbyBoss release of the GMC 750 Gallon Tanker. Over the last few days I have been putting together this really good kit This is a busy kit! And has plenty of parts but, there are NO rubber tyres (I know some of you hate those) There is quite a detailed engine which is an integral part of this build and you can't get past this. The chassis has 17 parts + the engine which in itself comprises 20 parts This construct is very stable and sits very flat giving a good base to ensure that all the wheel seat correctly. Note: the location of the exhaust as shown in the instructions below shows a much shorter tubing either side of the silencer box and it is, on checking, incorrect for this version. When assembling the exhaust, (unlike the instructions) the supplied kit parts are correct. Incidentally, the large vehicle fuel tank seen at the start of Step 4 is shown as part M12 however, it comprises parts M1 &M2 (the ends) and M12, the centre section along with M10, the filler cap. To also note here is how the exhaust should be for the 750 gallon Fuel Tanker. Believe me, I checked several times and changed the exhaust a couple of times. Here are the main elements assembled (not glued) This kit really does assemble very well Yesterday I completed the engine bay construction which can be seen below Now then! The Tanker kit has 14 Jerry Cans to assemble but, you can save yourself all the bother AS THEY'RE SO WRONG! Below you can see the HobbyBoss can (Yellow) and the Italeri one (Grey) The dimensions and based on the conversion of the dimensions of a real WWII pattern US 5 gallon Fuel/Water can from inches into millimeters and then converted into 1/35th scale. The real can is (width 13.75"x depth 6.75"x height 18.75") which equates to 9.98 x 4.90 x 13.60 The yellow can (HobbyBoss) at 11.00 x 4.49 x 14.71 The grey can (Italeri) at 10.04 x 4.49 x 13.25 This then means that the HobbyBoss can is at least 10% larger than the Italeri one, and although it isn't completely accurate, it is noticeably closer to the correct dimensions. Make of that what you will! A wood effect for the drop-down access doors on the truck bed for later effects Using Vallejo Surface Primer 74608 US Olive Drab - Luvly stuff incidentally I now have a unifying coat ready for Phase 2 The chassis took a bit of extra time due to all the nooks and crannies The cab is gorgeous, a glass finish - I do really like this paint! Shermaniac Posted December 3, 2014 Author Share Posted December 3, 2014 Phase 3 - The Decals This vehicle is NOT going to be in military service but as a post-war re-tread in civilian use However, some aspects of military use will be retained - you'll catch on as I move ahead. Simple immersion in water then application with Micro Set/Sol was the answer for decal placement Now these came out lovely - more yet to do here though! Shermaniac Posted December 4, 2014 Author Share Posted December 4, 2014 Phase 4 - Civilian conversion Last Night, I thought I'd start with the fuel tanks in a lovely bright Red! Well, that didn't come out well in the wash!!! Using Vallejo Model Color Matt Red (with a few spots of black to darken it) my first coat went to a Blackcurrant colour That's what happens when applying Red over Olive Green - The 2nd coat turned everything Raspberry but we're getting there! I'll let it dry a bit and see what happens - Think I may have to strip them and start again Actually, now they've dried out they already look weather worn red - Not bad! Just have to knock a few blemishes out and we're good. This, using some old wet & dry and a bit of micro-mesh, has left a few scuff marks........ I know, I'll apply some of the Olive Drab to the scuffs as further weathering and then I'll let the paint harden overnight. A satin varnish next I think before I continue with more weathering. Shermaniac Posted December 5, 2014 Author Share Posted December 5, 2014 Truck Cab and Body A bit more spraying today with a very light blue undercoat. A mix of Model Air White with spots of Panzer Aces 309 Periscope - I winged it! It took a while to safely mask off the cab, especially the open door area. But, coverage is excellent and there was no need to thin the paint. I have applied some chipping solution to the truck bed (another test piece for me) and we shall see later how this turns out. The paint needs to dry more first. The 2nd coat of paint After adding more Periscope Blue to the mix I resprayed the parts with this darker Blue - which is really good shade, and with none of the issues I had with the Red on the Fuel Tanks. The truck bed will be distressed later. Although I had decided that the main chassis would remain in the Army Olive I decided that the front bumper would have been repainted so I masked off the part. You can see some over spray which I will deal with next. I have removed the bonnet and door filler so you can see the contrast in colours a bit better. The windscreen has some masking applied which will remain until I apply a sealing varnish later on. This project is now moving at pace but I'm out for half of Saturday over at Hollywood Trade Warehouse and all day Sunday at the IPMS Coventry Winter Fayre at the Midland Air Museum I will take this along if anyone want to have a look. Shermaniac Posted December 9, 2014 Author Share Posted December 9, 2014 Latest from The Coventry Winter Show This is the first time the vehicle was almost fully together since the paint job and I took it to the Coventry Show for the Club table I was very pleased at the positive response from modellers and encouraged to continue to completion. I have a Club gathering on Saturday and a few jobs this week so advancing this build is likely from Sunday onwards. Now remember..... this is an exercise in weathering and distress to a vehicle so please be kind!!! First there was a Wash with Vallejo Washes Cab & Truck bed in Blue Wash Chassis & cab door in Olive Wash A bent bumper and some fender damage A mix of MiG Powders (Old Rust, Rail Rust & New Rust), Oil & Grease Stains This is a well used and well worn vehicle - and I'm not done with it yet! I still have the cab interior to finish as well as to remove the glazing to glue in Tyres and Hubs still need work as well as the Miniart WWII Drivers (US Driver) Figure only wearing Civilian dress (no shoulder holster). I also have all the tail, side and headlights to install. More later Folks! I want this done before Christmas. Shermaniac Posted March 9, 2015 Author Share Posted March 9, 2015 This has taken me a lot longer than I had anticipated but, most of that is periods of not actually doing anything. Most of this delay is doing the figure which I haven't done that many. He isn't perfect but I got this far and decided to call it a day. The juggling act on this final part was the fitting the figure to hold the steering wheel, have at least his left foot on the running board and his left hand on the door. Now that I see these final pictures, I am very happy with the overall outcome.
