Something very noisy just flew over and a look out the window showed a t-tail transport quiet high up, and another one clearly a c-17 is going over as I type this, first sounded different so could well have a been c-5, also had a chinook and apache this morning go over below the low cloud they made a racket

Just now a Hurricane over Neston.

I heard this noise and went out and there it was heading for Heswall. Maybe headed for Woodvale as it’s the Southport Air Show this weekend?

Not on Plane Finder so BBMF?

I had the camera in the garden with me today, as I knew there was a show on at the nearby Shuttleworth Collection. I managed to get a few snaps:

She wasn't squawking today and when I heard her coming, I rushed into the back garden when I should have gone in the opposite direction. The black line at the bottom of the photo is my roof. I literally had to point, shoot and hope for the best.

This one is a double-striped pug and is quite small, having a wingspan of maybe 14mm.

Any other moth fans/lepidopterists on here?

Yes! I once borrowed a (harmless) moth light trap from the local countryside rangers I volunteered with. That was years ago though. We live in a new build now so the garden hasn't yet attracted any notable wildlife apart from in the pond I dug.

@Lord Riot my wife works for the RSPB and she was hoping to borrow a moth trap from work, but sadly that didn't happen this summer. I have been thinking about building a small, portable trap using powerful LEDs (one UV, one green and one blue) which can run from a battery pack. I know that they aren't as good as mercury vapour or actinic lamps, but people have reported some success. In any case, all I have at the moment is my shed lighting with my UV insect zapper on the inside of one of the windows, safely away from the moths. While it might be considered better than nothing, I did get eighteen different species on one night.

Sadly, the past few nights have been very poor, with just one night where I had any moths settle (in this case, a pair of garden carpets) though I did get a brief visit from an impressively large old lady moth.

@lasermonkey I'd definitely recommend trying one hooked up to a battery pack, the rangers used to use a car battery and trapped a poplar hawk moth, some oak eggars and a garden tiger!

Nothing like that in our garden yet, just the usual yellow underwings. Butterfly numbers seem to be increasing though, we has three painted ladies and two red admirals last week. It's probably better where you are than here though. We went to Sandy last year and saw so much wildlife. There were even green woodpeckers on the hotel lawns.

@Lord Riot the various underwings (large yellow, lesser yellow, lesser broad-bordered yellow and straw) have been the most numerous visitors, along with willow beauties, marbled beauties, common wainscots and brimstones. I think my favourites so far have been the old lady and an incredibly cure canary shouldered thorn. I did see a scarlet tiger fly across the garden during early July, which was a bit of a treat.

It's been a good year for butterflies. Nothing out of the ordinary, but good numbers of whites, red admirals, gatekeepers and painted ladies. Not so good for small tortoiseshells, unfortunately.

Edit: the Mrs and I were at the Sandy Lodge earlier and I heard an unfamiliar sound in the distance. Through my bins I could see Shuttleworth's resident Albatros D.V on a test flight. I've never seen one before, certainly in the air and as it's my favourite WW1 aeroplane, it was a welcome and unexpected treat!

Yesterday lunchtime there was a KC-135 undertaking a race track pattern over the top at 15000ft. My house is under Air to Air Refuelling Area (AARA) 10 West so I do occasionally see the odd tanker and chicks. Nothing joined up with it while I was watching, which was particularly disappointing as the B-2 deployment is still on.

2 Dauphins’ from Hereford at Rollestone camp (nr Larkhill) at 1740 tonight. Also noticed the white unmarked pan techs there. One A365 was landing the other was shut down.

Living in the Odiham area, we have what seems to be a constant helicopter noise all day/night with the Helicopter transit lane east/west. They usually follow the M3, as well as circuit bashing Odiham itself. Usually chinooks, wildcats, apache and puma, but this morning I've also had gazelles which is nice to see

I was in the Rapide at the that time. We took her from Membury to SW and back. That was the last show before her annual which has just been started in the last week. Looking forward to many more shows in 2020.

We are an actual airline and do 30 minute pleasure flights from old warden, should any of you be interested in the future!

Guessing you maybe Basingstoke ish? Did you catch the two F15s heading NE about 1500 on Tuesday, pretty low and getting a shift on?

Yesterday I saw a Dragon Rapide, a Bristol Scout (the first I have seen flying) and Piper Cub in formation, plus a couple of hummingbird hawk moths.

Recently I have seen a big, powerful radial engined aircraft performing aerobatics in the distance, but too far away to ID properly. I  assume it's coming from Old Warden (it seems to come from that direction) and wonder if it's a P-47 or Sea Fury.

East of Basingstoke, yes. I never saw the f15s actually, I was in the hangar at the time. They were in and around SPTA weren't they?
