But the news is within 24 hours the reservoir should be lowered to the safe level and plans to get everyone home can be put in place. lasermonkey Posted August 6, 2019 Share Posted August 6, 2019 Another "in" rather than "over". This straw underwing moth was sitting on the workshop window. It was most obliging when I caught it in order to ID it and take an admittedly rubbish pic. It's actually far more beautiful than the photo suggests. After a recent couple of holidays in the Suffolk countryside, where there's a ridiculous amount of moths about, (I managed to photograph around fifty different species around the immediate area of the log cabin in just one week) there's slim pickings in our back garden. In the month since the past holiday, I've managed to see a common wainscot, a few lesser yellow underwings and this fellow. This time last year, our lavender plant was absolutely covered in silver-Y moths and I haven't seen a single one yet. I sometimes wonder if the neighbours have seen me skulking around the garden at night, torch in hand, peering into various nooks and crannies..... 2 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Bonhoff Posted August 12, 2019 Share Posted August 12, 2019 Surprisingly easy spotting here - 4 nights in a caravan in a country park at one end of Coningsby's runway. Inner anorak very happy so far. Any number of Typhoons (obviously), the BBMF C47, a Beech King Air and first time I've seen them.... A brace of V22 Ospreys which have now flown by 3 times so far. lasermonkey Posted August 17, 2019 Share Posted August 17, 2019 At the nearby RSPB headquarters at Sandy (it's just a couple of miles away) there was a Spitfire and Gladiator in formation for a while, followed by a low and slow flyby from the Spitfire and an appearance by a Chipmunk and Dragon Rapide. The wildlife also put in a good performance, with large numbers of dragonflies and butterflies. Robin Posted August 28, 2019 Share Posted August 28, 2019 Literally, right over my house this morning was a Kamov 'Helix' helicopter, quite low heading South, I understand that it is owned by a Swiss company and has been working in the Midlands, so I presume it was on its way home. tonyot Posted August 31, 2019 Share Posted August 31, 2019 Staying near to Northallerton yesterday at around 10 ish,........saw a large formation of RAF Tucano`s fly past at eye level,.......... possibly a 9 ship,...... very close formation,......... possibly heading for a passing out parade at Linton on Ouse? lasermonkey Posted September 2, 2019 Share Posted September 2, 2019 (edited) I had the camera in the garden with me today, as I knew there was a show on at the nearby Shuttleworth Collection. I managed to get a few snaps: Dragon Rapide Skyranger 912(?) from the nearby microlight airfield. They're not usually this low.... Talking of low..... She wasn't squawking today and when I heard her coming, I rushed into the back garden when I should have gone in the opposite direction. The black line at the bottom of the photo is my roof. I literally had to point, shoot and hope for the best. a few more microlights, such as this Cirrus SR22.... ..and this Renegade Spirit. There was also this glider.... ..and what I suspect is a B787... There were some other wingy things too such as one of the local red kites... ...one of many butterflies, this one being a red admiral that settled for a while.... .a common darter dragonfly.... ...and a few moths from this evening. I have become rather interested in moths over the past couple of months and though I have no specialist equipment, I have managed to see and identify getting on for fifty species at home, with another fifty at our favourite holiday destination. This one is a double-striped pug and is quite small, having a wingspan of maybe 14mm. This one I haven't ID'd as yet.. ...and finally a common wainscot. These are one of the more frequent visitors to our garden and it's a rare night that I don't see one. Any other moth fans/lepidopterists on here? A Gendarme helicopter appeared and proceeded to beat up and down a section of the local Route Rationale just to the south for about 35mins., they’ve done this a few times lately. (that one, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Large_yellow_underwing) ?
