Andrewvft
Hello, I just finished this model. It was quite easy to put together, but unfortunately it doesn't provide for retracted gears. Is this normal with Trumpeter? I had to do a bit of cutting and filling to display this model in flight. Being my first Trumpeter kit,I like the colourful instructions, but I wish there were proper dedicated acrylic colours for Russian jets. I had to try mixing colours to get what I thought might be correct colours. I like the weapon selection they provide. I wanted to go for live weapons, so I hope the colours I used are correct, I made the intake missiles detachable so the model can rest on the pylons if I can't get a proper stand for it. Also, I didn't like the shark decals, so I left them out. Other than that, the markings are quite simplistic. Definitely not as flashy as USN CAG birds. Not being familiar with Russian aircraft, I've developed a new fondness to the Su-27 and certainly looks pretty cool Anyway, here are the pics. Magnets only on intake missiles and railings allowing them to become detachable:
Alan P
Nice Flanker! There are dedicated acrylic colours for Russian subjects from a company called Akan, but they are not widely available. There's a thread in the Modern aircraft forum with all the relevant links if you are interested! Edited November 12, 2014 by Brokenedge
Breaker
Excellent work! I was coming to say the same thing, you can get AKAN paints which are matched apparently, I struggle to spray with them though!
Procopius
Excellent work! I was coming to say the same thing, you can get AKAN paints which are matched apparently, I struggle to spray with them though! I thin them with 91% isopropyl alcohol from the local drug store, and it seems to do the trick.
Cookenbacher
Excellent Flanker! I really like your idea of using magnets for attaching ordnance.

Andrewvft
Thanks guys. One thing I struggled to find out is, whats the difference between green tail tips/nose and white? Was it some sort of unit recognition?
modelglue
Nice model, welcome to the flanker club! Someone with more experience with radomes and dielectric panels should be by shortly to answer your qyestion on green vs white, but as a layman I prefer the grey colour on the newer jets. Alan P
Thanks guys. One thing I struggled to find out is, whats the difference between green tail tips/nose and white? Was it some sort of unit recognition? Ken (Flankerman) will know for sure, but I think it depends on when the airframe was produced - earlier production were green, later production white. Some have both! Probably squadron level replacements.
Flankerman
Thanks guys. One thing I struggled to find out is, whats the difference between green tail tips/nose and white? Was it some sort of unit recognition? Early Su-27's had green dielectric panels - radome, leading edge of starboard fin, fin tips, engine intake RWR aerials etc.... Later Flankers have white panels - but you can see a combination of both - white radomes with green aerials etc... I don't think there is anything significant about it - just different ways of painting it - white is now predominant - although grey is used on the more modern Flankers like the Su-35S. A few examples that I took at Lipetsk..... White radome, green panels... White radome, white fin tips, green aerials.... White vs Green.... From the RusAF 100th Anniversary show at Zhukovsky in 2012..... Su-27SM3 all white..... Brand new Su-35S with dark grey radome and light grey aerials/fin tips ......
