Eric Mc
They haven't used Orion for a spacecraft before. They did have "Project Orion" in the 1960s - which was their nuclear rocket but that wasn't a spaceship as such. It's in keeping with calling their manned spacecraft (Shuttle excepted) after characters from Greco-Roman mythology - Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, Orion etc. And of course, Orion has been used many times for aircraft. I even owned a Ford Orion car once.

Eric Mc
The first test of the main engine for the SLS was made a couple of days ago. It's a developed version of the Shuttle Main Engine. http://spaceflightnow.com/2015/01/13/nasa-kicks-off-sls-engine-testing-in-mississippi/
