Revell Tornado IDS question - want to build RAF GR.1 version

If I intend to build a Gulf War 1991 RAF Tornado in 1/48

  1. Can I use new release Revell Tornado as a base kit?
  2. What modification I need to do, if at all?
  3. Interested in desert pink RAF Tornados. Which decal sheet will you recommend?

Thanks,

A bit more on the content here:

As described, you can almost make an RAF GR1 from the box, but you will be missing som clear parts that is not in the initial release. Eiter you can make these yourself or you can "steal" from another kit if you have the needed parts there.

You'll need to add;

Aerials either side of the vertical fin

MACE fairings to the shoulder (belly) pylons

Lens for the LRMTS chin pod

Add 2 aerials on the central spine

Glare shields to the nav's CRT screens (locally made from green fabric iirc)

You'll need to change;

Ejection seats (headbox's are wrong for a GR1)

Pilots square central is a round wet film moving map display in the GR1)

Modify the pylons & omit the sway braces,RAF weapon pylons are internally braced)

Modify the BOZ pod's rear face as Revell have copied (badly) an unloaded BOZ pod (no flare cartridge pack)

ALSO,depending on if you're modelling a GR1A,you'll need sideways recon camera ports,the camera fairing just behind the nosewheel & omit the port gun.

But isnt IDS version same as GR1?

The examples covered in the sheet below, are they all RAF GR4s?

http://www.hyperscale.com/2011/reviews/decals/ma48174decalreviewkb_1.htm

Also, there is some appreciation and appreciation, in equal measure, of the sheet above.

I m no expert in RAF fleet and would like pros here to shed some light and clear up confusion.

Thanks,

Xtradecal Almark and Aviation Workshop all did decals sheets for various Op Granby aircraft including Tornados. The Aviation Workshop ones maybe hard to find now though.

Not exactly.The RAF & Saudi versions have a few differences that set them apart from the IDS,for one we use a different weapon 'system' than Germany & Italy thus we use our own dumb & guided bombs & not those used by other nations,we also used the JP-233 instead of the MW1 weapon dispenser used by Germany.

We also use a different ECM pod (Skyshadow) on the port wing & the GR1 also had a fuel tank in the fin,unlike the German/Italian ones.

The decals you linked to are for the GR1,The GR4 was a mid life upgrade of the GR1 fleet which was done between 1997 & 2004ish,so it was the GR1 that was used in the Gulf War,NOT the GR4.

Thank you Merv. That was good insight.

In the drawings for the Model Alliance decal sheet, I see the pod underneath the front fuselage. That to me is a GR4 but the decals list GR1s only. That pod I believe is a Mid Life Upgrade and is an LRMTS pod.

Can you confirm GR1s did not carry them?

Weapons can be different for different nations. What I m after is how different a GR1 will be from an IDS version, if my base kit is Revell IDS?

GR1's carried the LRMTS to the right of the nose gear,the pod on the left was added during the GR4 upgrade & is a FLIR pod.Weapons we used are totally different from the IDS outside of Sidewinders,Best weapons to add would be a coupe of DJ Parkins LGB'S;

RAF 1,000lb Paveway II Laser-Guided Bombs

RAF LGB,you can see the fairings on the pylon where the armourer has rested his hand

So my next question will be - which RAF Desert Storm decals are sized for Revell Tornado? Are there any decals for this kit in the market?

There are probably no actual decal sheets for a Revell Tornado from Op Granby (as they were all made before the kit came out), but as there are no markings that would actually make any real difference that any of them would do.

If you do a search on the In Progress section you'll find an article by General Melchie's describing how to RAF up the Revell kit...

Edit..in fact I've done the search for you....

Ok, externally,

GR1: 1 Chin pod

GR4: 2 Chin pods

IDS: No chin pods

Probably some lumps and bumps that differ between the 3 too, however this is the most recognizable differences.

Not exactly The RAF use the GR designation The RSAF use the Tornado IDS designation

RAF GR1 is equivalent to RSAF IDS

RSAF IDS is equvalent to part RAF GR4 plus other changes (The RSAF still use the designation Tornado IDS despite the upgrade programme)

RSAF IDS (still retains LRMTS. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x_xoYqPSgC4 this is post TSP 2 upgrade)

I have been trying to determine if these decals will fit Revell Tornado kit. Can anyone help?

http://www.printscale.org/product_138.html

Not sure about them fitting the kit but there accuracy is dubious. The aircraft serials look way off the mark size wise and font wise.

Op Granby aircraft didn't display serials underneath the tail planes. Indeed most of the stencils, if not all, provided were not displayed either and the ones that were, white coloured toned down rescue and ejection seat markings don't seem to be provided. Personally I would look elsewhere.

What would you think about the Kits World decals here? Tornado Desert Storm I mean

That's the ones I would go for, its correct style of stencils and serial numbers. I have their set for the Buccaneer, not used them yet but they certainly look good.

Watch out when you apply them though, they would have you add a few stencils that weren't displayed, such as the 'NO STEP' markings and some of the red coloured warning markings around the rear fuselage.
