Airfix 48th scale Gnat

Thanks gents.

Those instruments look great. How come I can never get results like that when I try the same method?

Think plenty practice, a light touch, steady hand, and a fine tipped instrument. Worked for me so sure you can do the same ;)

A session with filler last night was followed by a session with the wet & dry this evening.

Overall the fit of parts has been good apart from that 'shadow' of the lower fuselage bulge that I'd previously mentioned. Other than that only a little filler was required along the base of the fin.

Think I mentioned earlier that the kit only contains a single pilot figure, something I was disappointed by due to this being a two-seat aircraft, so thought I'd use a spare figure from one of my Airfix Lightning kits.

Maybe not. Lightning pilot of the right, Gnat 8 year-old pigmy on the left, the latter a scale 4 foot (1 meter 17) tall.

Hi

Ref the seats the kit has the later face blind handle ie B style, this came in to use about 1972/73 ish, you need to check photos to see whitch one is fitted.

The early one was a large D style and orange apart from a small middle bit which was Yellow and Black the attachment for the handle was all so diffrent.

I have just finished 4 72nd Gnats for our Display at Telford so all gnatted out just now.

I recall one of the Phantom pilots on 111 squadron, telling me that he had to do his fast jet training on T-38s in the USA because he was too tall to fit in a Gnat!

Thanks for the information Paul. The machine I want to do is from around 1970 and I'm about to tackle the seats so you caught me in perfect timing

By the looks of the pilot Airfix provided my 4 year old daughter would fit fine at a squeeze!

Thanks lads. Due to a lack of free time there's precious little progress to report at the moment and a work trip to Morocco next week means that situation isn't likely to change :(

I've done a little more work to a couple areas so will try to take a photo in what passes for daylight on what looks to be a typically dreich Aberdeenshire winters day later.

Aye, tell me about it! Think I've seen the sun poke his head out of the clouds once since I've been home and I'm sure I was in Telford that day...

Thanks lads and HOUSTON that Moroccan tea was something else! Don't normally drink tea but tried some in the interests of science since I'm here.

Took a couple of photos to keep progress up to date before I left; The rear cockpit needs a couple instruments added and some refinement of the upper shroud.

As moulded the center post that has the two extra dials lacks any detail so I shaved it down and added plastic sheet to better represent how it looked in various walkaround photos. There's also a few dome-head rivets holding that area together and these were represented by tiny dots of thick Revell enamel paint applied and left to dry before the top colour was brushed on.

Also made an attempt at representing the landing light in the nose from a piece of clear sprue. It's a bit basic but all I could fit in under the clear lens,

So here is how it sits before I left at stupid o'clock Monday morning,

Next on the list is the canopy demisting pipework and seats then add the various aerials before pointing the airbrush towards it.

Good progress Col. Enjoy Morocco mate, even if it is work related...

Cheers Aaron. Went for a wander around Casablanca today and it's an interesting place. Not seen any model shops though...
