Airfield vehicles- 1/72

Could you be perhaps just a little more specific?

Which nationality?

Which period.....The cold war was quite long.

Academy, Hasegawa, S-Models and Trumpeter all do kits that are useable (and those are off the top of my head).....If you could narrow down your area of interest a bit it would be easier to make specific recommendations.

The idea is to make small vignettes using vehicles alongside F86 Sabres which were used by numerous nations from say 1950 until the 80's I believe. Vehicles like fuel tenders, ammo trucks, small transports, etc. In the short term I'll say; US in Korea, Canadian at home/ France/ Germany & RAF at home/ Germany...all in the 50's. What I don't know is when they were abroad, did they use local stuff or bring their own...or both. I know it's 'wooly' but that's the best I can do at the moment. :newb:

Aside from whats been mentioned, you might also try railway modelling accessories for trucks and the like, and maybe convert them to military guise.

Something like this maybe? http://www.anticsonline.co.uk/1751_1_1624717.html

Wasn't trying to be cheeky dude, it's a big hobby and my question was perfectly genuine.....Here's some readily available stuff to get you started:

50s & Korea:

http://www.onthewaymodels.com/reviews/Academy/AcademyAmbulancepreview.htm

http://www.onthewaymodels.com/reviews/Academy/Academy6x6%20cargo%20truckpreview.htm with this http://www.cmkkits.com/en/conversion-sets/gmc-353-airfield-fuel-tank-conversion-set-for-aca-1-72/

http://www.onthewaymodels.com/reviews/S-Model/AlMagnus_S-Model_PS720047_review_preview.htm (there is another kit #720046 with the same Jeep and a trailer instead of the gun)

There are a lot more specialised kits out there, most of them multimedia and they can take some hunting down.....I recommend this place: http://www.tracks-n-troops.eu/shop/index.php

The seller is utterly reliable and he won't bill you until he has collected up all of your items ready for posting, but it really can take a while to get this stuff.....My last order arrived almost exactly thirteen months after I placed it (but nobody else could have got it quicker IMHO).

I've got the tractor from the kit in the first link and it is surplus to requirements.....PM me if you want it. :coolio:

Sgt, no cheekiness detected and I understood your initial response. I'll take a look at what you've posted and get back to you, especially about the tractor.

Cheers guys for the pointers, that 'tracks & troops' site will take a while to look through once I know what I'm looking for.

Just thinking, would the Bedford QL refueler still be use with the RAF 'till 1956?

The Bedford QL refueller as depicted OOTB in the Airfix kit is only suitable for a 1950s version......For a WWII version, it needs to be modified thus:

e5bc619614448c3089479ea7d5494646_zps7594

Model built and painted by ATF member: daveh

Keep in mind that this is a 1/76 kit, so it will appear a little diminuative alongside similar 1/72 vehicles.

Thanks for that picture, I've been looking for the detail aft of the dome, now to find some deeper leaf springs to fit the proper wheels as on the new Airfix tooling. There are other wartime fits, including the long containers on top of the tank, like those on the Airfix AECs.

There is a book available on the big AECs, the Matador and the 6-wheel tanker, which illustrates some of the wartime and postwar differences. Fitting the swinging booms as on the Airfix QL is one of the early mods, but some of the later ones look very different.

I've got a real hankering to go to town on the Airfix Matador Bowser, it's such a chunky and handsome looking thing.....I've started gathering aftermarket parts and references, but it will have to wait untill I've cleared a lot of other stuff off my desk.

Seeing that I can use the Bedford QL, I'm getting one at the nationals but not by Airfix but by Hobby Master. I saw one of these at model show a month or so ago and it looked very nice but talked myself out of it thinking it was outside my time frame. It has metal cab, injection plastic sprues, clear glazing, decals. Can't vouch for it's accuracy though. Take a look here: http://www.hobbymaster.com.hk/gpower_72_hg4801.shtml They do quite a selection by the looks of it.

I'm somewhat familiar with the kit....I believe its a BYO die-cast (like the new Dragon 1/72 stuff), so you may want to refine or add some detail.

Would you post a WIP thread when you start on it.....I'd like to get a closer look at the kit.

Now you're talking! I was driving these at 17,and flat top and S**t cart on my 1st posting (Brize) without a 1629 too (FMT600 later),we all were!

On one pan,it had a "bump" we could get all 6 wheels off the deck. I bought the dropside and flat top and going to convert one of them to S**t cart Bantam. Not a real one!

Depending on year they were Dk RAF Blue then Yellow and then Dk Green, some had the Yellow stripes, some got missed, although the Flat top from this company is in Akrotiri light Grey and Yellow.

I may have missed them in that long list but for the RAF there is one vehicle that must have appeared on every airfield in the cold war. The landrover. It was seen in many variants. Short wheelbase, long

wheelbase, soft top, hardtop, estate, fire engine, ambulance and probably some others.

Here's a model of an aircraft starter unit typically seen next to USAF Sabres: http://www.hannants.co.uk/product/F4M7028

This type was used on all air bases during the Korean War.

>> www.aim72.co.uk they do 1/72 ground equipment

True. Just take care, as the quality of their products varies.

Alex

This is a very interesting thread, which I don't mean to hijack, merely widen slightly!

I'm interested in 1/72 USAF airfield emergency vehicles and other vehicles that would have been seen on the ramp of an early 1960s USAFE base. I have spent many fruitless hours on the Web looking for kits, die cast models and even toys!

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

I believe S-Models do a 'Mutt'.....Yup, they do: http://www.onthewaymodels.com/reviews/S-Model/WAllcott_S-Model_PS720152_preview.htm

Academy do a M35 'Deuce and a Half': http://www.onthewaymodels.com/reviews/Academy/WAlcott_Academy_M35_13410_preview.htm

Your guide for 1/72 AFV and vehicle kits should be 'Henk of Holland': http://henk.fox3000.com/index2.htm This site lists almost every avalable kit in 1/76 or 1/72.

More detailed reviews can often be found at 'On The Way!': http://www.onthewaymodels.com/

Hard to get kits can usually be sourced through 'Tracks & Troops': http://www.tracks-n-troops.eu/shop/index.php They are utterly reliable, but massive patience is required as they have to source the kits themselves, a wait of a year or more is not uncommon (my personal record is 13 months). You are not billed until the order is completed and the high initial P&P charge on confirmation of the order is merely a nominal placeholder until MIlan actually has the kits and can weigh them to establish the real cost. :nerd:

Just to add to the list, here's

http://www.oxforddiecast.co.uk/

Die-cast, 1/76, mostly british, and they have an interesting military section too.

Thanks very much for the link. I agree that there are some really interesting vehicles there, but I'm really looking for some American vehicles for a diorama incorporating the control tower and fire station at an early 1960s USAFE base in East Anglia.

Hi There,

don't forget the lovely 1/72 scale Chevy pick up truck from PJ Productions.

http://www.pj-production.be/en/vehicles-1-72-/54-722004-chevrolet-m-1008-pick-up.html

The station wagon is also availiable, which were everywhere on US bases in the 1980's/90's.

http://www.pj-production.be/en/vehicles-1-72-/55-722005-chevrolet-m-1009-utility.html

I bought a couple and they're beautiful kits.

I also bought a couple of VW T3 Transporters, from the same supplier, as they were most popular and a very common sight on US/European bases.

http://www.pj-production.be/en/vehicles-1-72-/53-722003-vw-t3-transporter.html

If you're looking for older vehicles then F4 models do a stonking 1950's pickup truck, which wouldn't look out of place, as it was used by many branches of the US forces.

http://f4models.blogspot.co.uk/2013/11/usaf-us-navy-1950s-utility-pickup-truck.html

Regards

Reggie
