The best Lancaster model?

Yes, there is a 1/48 version, the only game in town is the Tamiya kit.

As for best 1/72? All have their pro's and cons.

This discussion is useful, but was before the new Airfix Lancaster came out.

New Airfix Lanc review, whilst this is the Dambuster kit, pretty much the same plastic throughout bar the obvious differences:

Best kit is the new 1/72 Airfix one that came out this year, it is 1/72. The only 1/48 one is an old Tamiya one from 1975 which has been out in several different versions ever since, and has had a couple of minor updates. It can be the basis of a good model but takes a fair amount of improvement to bring up to modern standards.

The Tamiya mold seems to have been well looked after, and is still crisp and mainly flash free, and while its raised detail, it still comes across well in this day and age. One of the benefits of the latest release is the pre-painted canopies that are included.

The Stirling was first released in 1966. The current Lancaster came out in 2014. The intervening 48 years have seen much change, not least to the condition of the moulds of many of Airfix's oldest kits. The Stirling and Halifax were pretty crisp when they came out but they are not as good as they were when they were new.

There have been three completely different 1/72 Airfix Lancasters over the decades: for the avoidance of doubt, this is the one you want.

I have the Revell one in the stash, and a quick look at the sprues leaves a good impression. It was also cheap, at £15.

I did have a proper bargain last year though, bagged the Airfix Dambuster set (the older one) for £3 from a tabletop sale. The wife brought it back and asked if she had done well... Ended up giving it to my lad to build and to be honest it went together really well. Raised rivets and panel lines but it still looks pretty good.

The Tamiya 1/48 is in my opinion the best kit of a Lanc that can produce a good finish - the 1/72's all have their problems. Tamiya's Lanc can be cured and tweaked to lokk good add some more and it will look great.
