hacker
DavidI only have the lacquer Gunze. The acrylic version was taken off the market in North America, and Europe several years ago. Randy Been searching for a source for Gunze acrylic paint and one hobby shop l inquired at told me the above. Ok so l come to the conclusion that its hard to get and even more difficult to mail order due its on the restricted list for Canada. So now what is the alternative? I was looking to Gunze Luftwaffe colours to try out on my current project but now have redefine my search to other acrylic paints. Recommendation? depressed lemur
I hope this is not widespread. I have just got my list together for Gunze paints to collect at Telford. I guess I will be able to find t if these are becoming scarce then.
Silver Fox
MDC had racks full at Southwell yesterday. Give them a ring and pre-order?
hacker
Well l know they been taken off the North American market, why l don't have a clue. I inquired with Bob over at MDC and he said eventhough they are an acrylic unlike say Tamiya they seem to have something in their formula that makes them fall in the restricted category here in Canada. I wish someone knew that answer. Maybe some further independent research is required to establish that answer aka curiosity killed the cat. So now an alternative is being looked for cor the best acrylic Luftwaffe colours
Duncan B
Firstly, let's get things straight. Mr colour and Mr Hobby are both acrylic paints made by Gunze, the difference is that Mr colour is a Lacquer based acrylic while Mr Hobby is described as an "Aqueous Acrylic" by Gunze. Mr colour was removed from the European market (I can't speak for the N American market) due to it's contents. The Mr Hobby acrylics are still readily available in Europe. I use the Gunze acrylics almost exclusively (I still have a stock of Mr colour as well as Mr Hobby) and swear by them for ease of use and durability. I have tried Vallejo but don't like some of the colours and also find them very soft and difficult to spray. Lifecolor are not too bad to brush paint and the colours appear to be a decent match (or at least the ones I have used are anyway). I haven't tried the new Humbrol Luftwaffe colours but wasn't impressed with some of their other colours. I have used Xtracolour enamels in the past and they worked well but the Xtracrylics didn't spray well for me. Polyscale were nice but are now very difficult to find. i have been told that WEM do a decent range of RLM colours but don't have any first hand knowledge of them. Duncan B Tried to edit (3 times) to get the spelling of Mr colour correct but my Mac's spell checker just won't have it!!
colin
Duncan Don't think the Mr Hobby is water based as such, they seem to be like Tamiya's, and like being thinned with their apporpriate thinner, X20A(Tamiya) or Laquer thinner, never really had much luck thinning them with water as Vallejo/Lifecolour etc.

IIRC Gunze actually refers to Mr Hobby as 'Aqueous acrylics' so maybe my use of 'water based' is a bit off. I use Mr colour Thinners with mine same as for the lacquer based Mr colour (sic). hacker
Regardless the Canadian government deemed it a solvent based paint and is on the restricted list so that as they say is that. My search within Canada came up zero so off to try something else. There some new acrylic paints now but unsure of what is the best to use. Thought of life like paint and one other. Might stick to my model master enamels or give the new Humbrol colors a whirl
colin
Don't think you'll go far wrong with Model master paints hacker, have a few and they spray lovely,
hacker
Always use them but always try or use different paints for different variations. Not all paints spray the same way or turn out differently colour wise. Its all about what your end results you want or imagine how it's suppose to look like when finished Edited October 13, 2014 by hacker
