Alan P
Don't want to open a can of worms, but can anyone explain the current colour schemes of Flankers? There's this standard pale grey one which seems to still be mostly Flanker-B (Su-27S or P) although this pic shows an SM! Then there's this deeper blue scheme which seems to be mostly Su-27SM2 or 3s Is the deep blue a new scheme for all Flankers, or is it just the latest versions? It's ahrd to find pictures of the latest frontline jets that illustrate whether this is incidental or intentional! Anyone know and could enlighten me? Many thanks Edited September 25, 2014 by Brokenedge

Alan P
Then there is this new scheme. SU-30SM This appears to be an "attack bomber" scheme, The Su-34, -35 and Su-25SM are also being painted in that colour. I also found this pic of a standard Su-27S in the "new" colours: http://www.airplane-pictures.net/photo/431241/rf-92408-russia-air-force-sukhoi-su-27/ (this is a great site btw!) Also note the new "Russian" (not Soviet) stars - the outline has a blue stripe that represents the Russian flag: Any more ideas? We may be seeing a lot more of these aircraft in the near future!! Alan P
This is a very useful site which suggests the updated colour scheme on the Su-27S/P may depend on which factory did the overhaul. http://www.mars.slupsk.pl/fort/sukhoi/su-30-ru0.htm Still a mystery to me though!! Flankerman
I used AKAN bright blues on my Zvezda Su-27SM...... A rattle can of Halfords Rover Tempest Grey did for my 'aubergine' Su-34.. with Begemot decals.... The 'Colour Police' would have a fit - but it looks OK to my tired old eyes..... As I didn't have the appropriate AKAN paints for my Su-27 (Early) - I used the enamel set of Flanker colours from White Ensign - which are very good... horrido109
Personally I like the lighter colours more but lately it seems as if the Russians are using all sorts of combinations, probably depending on where it was painted:
Flankerman
The Flanker in the foreground is an upgraded Su-27SM - in fact the same aircraft as my Zvezda model above. The one behind it is (I think - there's not much to go on!) a 'standard' Su-27. That would probably explain the colour differences. Early Su-27SM's had the old style camo - like this one I photographed at Lipetsk in 2005....... By 2007, the Su-27SM's were appearing in the new 'bright blues' scheme... Although this one - taken last year at MAKS 13 - is in the 'old' scheme.... Ken Edited September 27, 2014 by Flankerman
Flankerman
Although....... the latest Flankers all seem to be in the 'old' muted colours........ (all taken in 2012).... Su-27SM3......... Su-30M2....... Su-35S.... Ken
Alan P
That's really helpful. Just the info I was looking for. I'm going to stick with the pale blue/grey I think, but I like the post-refurbishment markings too! I wasn't planning a full WIP but it's going so well, I might! ;-)

marksandygill
I'm guessing the wide range of colours is due to the fact the Russians have no money and just use whatever paint they have left over?

Flankerman
Armando, No - the Su-33 kit has the 'old' stars..... http://www.cybermodeler.com/hobby/kits/has/images/has_01565_decals.jpg I don't think I have seen a Su-33 with the new 3-colour stars and titles - have they been adopted by the AVMF ??? AngstROM
Boy, that Su-35S is SEXY! The Flanker family (single-seaters, anyway!) have it in their genes. Fabulous looking aircraft; if I had the chance to build only one kit, it would have to be an Su-35S -I was planning to do mine as the sultry 'aubergine' Red 07 from the kit, but Flankerman's pic of Black(?) 01 has got me wobbling on that... Thanks, Ken -I think!
