Bandai 1/72 VF-1A Super Valkyrie

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys this is my latest work in Progress, Bandai's old 1/72 VF-1A Super Valkyrie from the 80's.

You'll be thinking 'What? Bandai makes planes?? I thought they only did robots?'

Well, apparently they did and technically the valkyrie can be considered a mecha so...

Anyways although Hasegawa and Bandai themselves have newer and much superior kits of the Valkyrie, I'd thought I would try building their old kit out of curiosity and also to see what fun I could have out of building it. It's cheaper too by a thousand yen or so, haha.

The kit comes in brown and greenish grey plastic, quite a bit for a thousand yen kit.

Being a kit of the 80's it's quite chunky with some details being out of shape particularly the nose.

However I will be keeping the shape of the design as I plan to show off the 80's design and build of the kit.

It would be pretty cool to also show a comparison with the modern Hasegawa kit and show how far has the design progressed, a comparison from the 80's and now.

However the kit is much too plain to be shown like that so that calls for some detailing up, first is to give it the trademark valkyrie stub nose.

The pilots were the real reason why the UN Spacy won the war. Not included are his squadronmates; Brick Hardfist and Thrust McThickneck

More updates coming soon!

Hi Madhatter,

Haha I think that is Bandai's Engrish attempt to come up with a macho sounding name. A Squadron full of male porn stars wouldn't be too off in reality, I mean look at Top Gun... :banghead:

the whole things not very big, about smaller than a F-14 of same scale. The box is around the same dimensions as one of Bandais' 1/144 kits, I think its the perspective that makes it look big lol.

I have been building the Hasagawa VF-1S on and off for the last... 8 years or so now. I did drop one of the leg packs on the floor and tread on it. In hindsight I should try and rescue it. I look forward to watching this build tho, I got the VF-0D to build as well. :)

Looking forward to more, love the desk btw! ;)

Kind Regards,

Dazz

Thanks guys, I'm not sure if this is a Bandai original or a rebox, but seeing the chaotic nature of the early valkyrie kits, I wouldn't be surprised if it was.

Done up stuff recently, the wheels and cockpit have been completed.

The usual weights are added to the nose...

Depsite being an old kit, the Cockpit is surprisingly well detailed. With this done, the focus now moves to the wings and the leg assembly.
