Space Battleship Yamato General Thread

Yeah, that landing craft is 1/1000, shouldn't be a problem :)

If I recall the Darold base was part of a space station? some guns and greeblies? Maybe you can expand on it? add a few more tiles of greeblies? I'm thinking of an asteroid field base and just add and subtract rocks to change the scale of the display. Perhaps the same applies to the space station segments? Bit like how they built the Deathstar trench for the SW films.

New kit due this week, the new badguy carrier from the new film.

banm141263.jpg

Not as good looking as the Gamilas ones I think, but still quite an original and interesting design. Probably end up picking one up and some escorts in the future :)

I had another look at this today and I wanted to share an observation (not to be confused with a critique).

For an alledged totally 'alien" race to Earth and the Garmillas, it shares a lot of design aspects - ie, the intake /scoops below and around the flight deck - especially the ones behind the forward antenna. They also remind me of the Cordoba from Crusher Joe.

I just wondered why the designers felt it necessary to share those design points when the two races had apparently never met until now?

Very true, they all have naval ship type bridges, lots of fins, pods, poles and other assorted gear, plus using a flat top to launch and recover space fighters :P

In universe there may be a possible explanation in all humanoid races apparently evolved from a single progenitor species, so they all have 99% the same DNA, similar cultures, fairly similar tech and physics. They make it a plot point in the show to explain how everyone looks the same apart from being blue or green or whatever :P

On the other hand all the ships were done by the same guy and he probably really, really liked fins and intakes :P Same with the other ships he made like the Arcadia from Harlock. These 2199 versions have been heavily detailed up, lot more gizmos and panels, but overall shape is same as the 70s with all the flaws that brings :)

Well, if you do, please do let me know and we can catch up. If you need a place to crash, we have a spare room too.

I might take you up on that, but we might also turn it into a family outing in which case we'll probably do the touristy thing and get a hotel room.

Where do you originally hail from?

Originally East Anglia, but I spent most of my life in Sheffield before coming out here. So a mix of North and South with a pinch of Kiwi...

Well in light of the new movie(s), yamato2199.net held a modeller's competition, and just looking at what everyone's done, especially on the Gamilas side, is just really inspiring me to be more creative with my ships. Though I'd be too scared to try anything in case I ruin them, they're worth their weight in gold these 1/1000s.

I thought I'd share the link, there are two galleries. One for UNCF and one for Gamilas. Have fun figuring out which is which :P

There are some nice ideas for a Domelaze on there too

that is a nice find indeed! some wicked looking ships in there. Some good lit ships too including the Core Command Ship which I'll be building for the upcoming Sci-Fi group build. Nice to see one that wasn't blue too.

I really liked that dark gray Domelaze with the orange strip running down the middle. Very unique. I'll have to book mark that page when I get home

As an aside HLJ has the Core ship at more than half off. While I'm not a massive fan of it, hard to refuse at that price if anyone had a gap in the collection to fill :)

And the UN Fleet too, perfect timing :)

  • 2 weeks later...

I picked up my Domelaze today - I am so stoked I got it now.

I have had a really good look over it and I reckon lighting it will be easy enough.

I was also reminded of how big this kit is! It's just massive! Plenty of space to add some surface details (or greeblies as others may say). I'm sure I peeved off a few hardcore SBY fans over in SSM with my version of the Shangri-La with detail that wasn't visible on the show. I also think they didn't like the custom paint job ;) ....

I may even change my Sci-Fi GB entry to this ship.... just not sure if there is enough time to do what I want to it (4 months may seem like a long time but I build at the speed of evolution)

One of my favourite things about the 2199 show is how they have added detail to the various ships, most of the time they look plain due to I guess the limitations of animation budgets. But every so often you get a close up and you can pick out panel lines, warning labels, different layers of material etc. It really jumps out compared to the long shots.

So you are only doing what the animators themselves are doing :)

I mean this is an official production sketch

You can see the sheer level of detail that you simply can't animate every time, but it is meant to be there :)

There is an art book out there with detailed sketches of everything in the show, but its like a Holy Grail, they sold out overnight unless they do another run it'll be hard to find one.

As a sample...

87047T3.JPG

it'd just be the perfect resource for hyper detailing :(

Sadly in the absence of such a book most of the online images don't show anything that isn't already on the model itself. I can rustle up some screenshots of any close ups but I don't think there will be many. Most of the time the ship was cruising majestically centre screen or being menacing :P

The books were called 'Material Books' and there is one for Earth and one for the Garmilas if you wanted to take a shot, best of luck if you do :)

Hey Misrule,

Just out of curosity, have you tried the Japanese Amazon for those Material Books? While being bored sitting here waiting for my girlfriend to finish making her cake, I had a quick lookie on HLJ, and got a picture of the front cover and then found them on Amazon. I doubt that the ones I have found are the ones you are talking about, but they are made by Mag Garden and HLJ refers to them as "Offical Material". But alas Space Battleship Yamato is not my forte, give me Macross or Gundam or even Aa Megami-Sama and I am your man ;)

Well here are the links regardless, if you have any pictures of the covers I will have a look for you the ISBN's would be better. ;)

They have stock of both over 10 each.

Kind Regards,

Dazz

Those are indeed the books :) When I was checking last time I was told Amazon Japan only deliver to that country, but if they do international shipping I may have found what that crimbo money is going on :)

Much appreciated, these are very high on my must have list, right up there with a Figma Saber and a Master Grade Geara Zulu (When they hurry up and release one!) :)

Your right about not being able to buy outside of Japan. I just tried and got told it wasn't available to customers in Australia (stupid rule) :(

We need to find a contact in Japan.... Any helpers?

First I've ever heard of that rule. I've personally ordered lots of things from the Japanese Amazon and got them shipped to myself. Mostly DVDs and Newtype books mind. I will have another look later on for you. I wonder if the fact I'm in England matters?? :/

Kind Regards,

Dazz

Hmmm, then I must be doing something wrong. I tried to buy the Garmillas book and it told me (in Japanese) that I couldn't buy it. I had to copy the text and input it into a translator to read the text. Maybe I screwed it up somehow, which wouldn't surprise me. I'm not having much luck with PCs lately

Good friend of mine picked up the books last year (The first I've heard of it) and has offered to rustle up a few scans, though apparently the warship stuff is mostly basic schematics and the bridge interiors. I mentioned the Domelaze so we'll see what shows up :)

I managed to buy the book in the first link. I had to re-register for Amazon and that seemed to work. It wasn't very much either - $54.00 AU, so I am pretty happy about that.

I had issues with Amazon a while as well when trying to buy from the States - it wouldn't let me buy there either, so I am guessing there was an issue with my profile. No idea really.

Anyways, I hope that book is the one I need. It's hard to tell as you don't get any previews of whats in it. I just took it by the English text saying "Garmillas" :)

Now that'll do nicely :D

It should be smaller than the Domelaze Dreadnought, but it looks quite a bit bulkier.

Though the one in the pic is a Scratch build, very nice one though :)
