Recently I have obtained red bulls 2010 title winning rb6 from both tamiya and a maker called DTM.

Just be warned this first post is very photo heavy

First the tamiya one, most have already seen this so i dont need to waffle on to much about it apart from i have purchased the top studio cockpit, bulkhead and wheel nut sets for it also carbon decals from studio 27 and a few other little bits so here's the tamiyas car

The tamiya one will be done as the brazil gp version with the previously mentioned detail sets and a bit of detailing under the engine cover

Now for the next post for the DTM car

Right as promised the DTM redbull rb6.

This is a full resin and metal kit with very minimal instructions and to be honest that's all I really know about it. Before I brought it i scoured the net looking for others builds of this car but only found one from a guy in Japan and beings that i can't speak or read a word of Japanese Google translate was used with very odd results (i guess the guy was using japan slang for bits)

Any way here it is And again it's quite pic heavy

This car will be built as webbers car from the german gp but as you can see from the decal sheets i can go from being sebs car from the british gp up to both cars from the hungarian gp no further though due to the wings and also how the f-duct is postioned

One quick question for any that may know, with the metal bits like the wings/ suspension arms there seems to be a blackish sort of dust coating it so my quetion is how do i get rid of all that and should i use the more gritty micro mesh pads to polish themnup a tad before priming?

Thanks for looking shaun

Thanks for a look in the boxes. I have a Revell RB9, so it's interesting to see the differences.

Your question about the metal parts. By all means polish the surfaces with a fine mesh to get rid of the dark coating. Follow up pretty well straight away with an etching metal primer. Mr. Metal Primer is one that comes to mind.

Enjoy your builds.

Thanks for the advice guys and will be cleaning up the metal bits soon

Right on with the builds.

DTM Red bull

So far all i have had the chance to do is knock off the mould ends and mock up the resin bits together

20140907_112004_zpstwty0iiq.jpg

20140907_112015_zpslvt7hzvq.jpg

More will come with this but most probably at a slow rate due to the complexity of this kit and i can say i am already enjoying my first proper taste of a kit that requires so much work

Tamiya Red bull

This is coming along alot quicker as i have made it previously so with that here are my plans for the kit, i will be doing this as the brazil gp version with the car sort of opened up to reveal under the skin so heres what i have done so far

I have modified the f-duct where it connects to the rear wing to mimic the real car

20140907_203703_zpskogijgpz.jpg

The roll hoop with the camera holes drilled

20140907_203723_zpsmi6aoecw.jpg

The engine cover which wont be put on once finished

20140907_203731_zpsophnxtly.jpg

And a mock up of what has been done tonight

Just a quick question yo anyone that may know, for the resin dtm redbull what is the best primer to do both resin and metal? I have been looking at u-pol acid #8 but would like advice from those more experienced than me with resin.

Cheers shaun

I mostly use two part automotive primer-surfacer for both resin and white metal, currently I'm into a can of PPG D8022, but I have used many brands over the years to good effect. It's probably not the most "buyer/user friendly" with each component in one litre cans and so on though. Not sure if Hiroboy Zero paints have something similar?

I also use Alclads primer more and more as an alternative, and from what I have seen so far it would also work well. I have never tried it on white metal yet, but I see no reason why it should not adhere and work well.

I can't remember their codes as they last quite a long time before I have to buy a new can, but I remember having used Glasurit, Dupont, Sikkens and ICI. Some are like 15-20 years ago though, so they are likely to have changed their ranges since then anyway. I suspect most two part automotive primers do a similar job in this case, as long as they are surfacers for sanding before the top coat.

But don't forget to try the Alclad primer, I like what I have seen of it so far.

With the help of fellow britmodellers have made some crucial progress with both cars so here it is

first the tamiya car

This is the late season style nose cone with the cameras removed from the nose tip to the bottom of the wing pillars

20140912_175840_zps19mgdjjp.jpg

And i have been able to make a a start with the cockpit detail aswell which at the moment all i have done is stuck the metal surround in, the top studio instructions are not very clear so it took about an hour of fiddling before i figured out hownit went in

20140912_175808_zpsq4h0836q.jpg

20140912_175949_zpsjaoku5dw.jpg

Alot more is being done as i speak and it will hopefully have been primed by the end of the weekend

And on to the dtm red bull

All this for me i completely new so i didnt really know where to start with painting or assembling so here is what i have done so far

I have washed both the resin and metal bits and slightly polished them up then glued the wing pillars to the body, I did try to fill the gap between the resin and metal before puting primer over it but it revealed some small nasty bits sp they were filled and sanded again

20140912_175903_zpscr78bctz.jpg

And i drilled out the holes for the suspension parts ans all the other little bits off the car

20140912_175936_zpsyg57povh.jpg

And i had to drill out the wholes for the outlets at the rear of the car

A small update just for the tamiya car today as the dtm one has been primed

The seat has been started

20140913_112822_zpsaadqmjqm.jpg

And now with the detail bits

20140913_113746_zpsxgshjuy7.jpg

I also managed to get the new bulk head on

20140913_124152_zps9i6lly2f.jpg

Just a quick look at my work area before i had a little tidy today, things were starting to get lost so it had to be done

Tamiya rb6

Right so things have slowed down a bit with the tamiya car so here is what's been done since last time

this is the fiddly as anything belts which i will just add the instructions for these are wrong and also the picture of how they lay when put together is wrong which i only found out when looking through the haynes book

20140919_213341_zpsm9sg1s97.jpg

And the radiator has been modified due to im putting the electical boxes in

20140919_213314_zpssam32kbe.jpg

And the floor which is now ready for priming

20140919_213157_zpsiuw387ae.jpg

The engine which is ready for priming

20140919_213223_zpscgam4yoa.jpg

The main body with the new bulk head on and the gaps filled and sanded, one thing with this bit i am considering is do i put the roll hoop on now or should i wait until after painting

20140919_213212_zpswlbudojg.jpg

And finally the nose with the new attachment bits on

20140919_213252_zpsjnh8napn.jpg

So thats it for the tamiya car for now

DTM RB6

To be honest I have been favoring this car massively so for with these builds as i have never done a multi media car previously so here is what has happened since last time

The floor which has been primed, painted and i have just started to decal using a set of Tamiya decals for the first redbull i did a while ago

20140919_213105_zpsut6ghrg3.jpg

It may sound stupid of me but i only realised that the little black bit near the exhaust outlet is in a different position to the tamiya car so i have had to cut out the decal around it and i will use the decals for the this tamiya kit to fill the hole the the tamiya bit sticks out

20140919_213117_zpstdmkcddz.jpg

And i would just like to say i am not using the DTM carbon decals as they are rubbish so im making templates of them and using a sheet of carbon i have laying around

20140919_213132_zpspf6sptjc.jpg

And now for a bit i am new to this is the seat which has been sparyed with glue and had a powder sprinkled on to give the seat some texture, something that will be done on the tamiya car if it works out, ( learnt from a fellow bm member) and i will spray it with the seat colour tomorrow

20140919_213449_zpstxvtstxl.jpg

And now the main body which has been primed with grey and then white and flated back as the white halfords primer pitted massively so i went over with zeros primer and it took better than i thought so the zero paints decal matched yellow has been put on so hopefully the blue will go on tomorrow

20140919_213524_zps9qygaqqa.jpg

Two highly challenging builds and you're doing really good work. What makes is difficult to noodle-out is the fact that there's not one straight line anywhere on a surface!

Like trying to figure how to glue porpoises together... :frantic:

Codger it is indeed a pain in the butt to glue resin to metal, honestly I underestimated the different style of sanding you have to adopt

Massively important part done today, the paint

Feel like a really long time since I've updated this but due to my lovely other half popping out our third son not alot has been done but here is what has been done in the times when I haven't been sleeping, feeding or doing a poopy butt

First on the DTM car

All the main suspension parts have been painted

20140923_183425_zpsgamqvike.jpg

20140923_183416_zpsni6ntoup.jpg

Alot of the little bits primed

20140923_183344_zpsgmfitcvb.jpg

Aswell as the downforce producing parts primed

20140923_183252_zpskye7jpxy.jpg

I had to strip the seat and start it again

20140923_183225_zpsp7rq0skk.jpg

The wheels have been cleaned up ready for paint

20140923_183654_zps6u9e3wrd.jpg

The wings and bits in white primer ready for the blue

20140927_083930_zpshpz5vw9z.jpg

The radiator inlets

20140927_083938_zpsaxxtk3uz.jpg

And now all the wheel bits and other small peices

20140927_084044_zpsvjb3tchs.jpg

And for those who are like me who have almost forgotten how the car looks here a few mock ups

20140923_183607_zpsvbzoyoni.jpg

20140923_183616_zpsoqd5q6jq.jpg

20140923_183631_zps45phqlxx.jpg

And a couple of the tamiya car

The way the car is going to be done i cant leave the headrest as it comes so ive filled it to replicate the foam

20140923_212340_zpsw0k9dftb.jpg

The floor is ready for the carbon decals

20140923_183314_zps3a0pxdss.jpg

And so is the engine which for some reason in the pic has a nice blue hue

A really small update due to tiredness

All the DTM car today

The main car has had a proper gloss coat put on before the decals go on

20141002_174708_zps8sszlwlf.jpg

20141002_174732_zpsjoig83wq.jpg

And last for today is the wheels which i will just add the the green "soft tyre" strip around the out side is a pain in the butt as it didnt fit even though they are made for 1/20 cars
