Revell 1/48th RAF Tornado GR1A.......

Recommended Posts

Thanks guys, frankly there are a lot of issues with the accuracy of this kit............and yet again we're still waiting for a really accurate Tonka ! Having said that it's still the best available and I'm more than happy to spend time on it but I'm sure there are some who won't....

Robert/Pete, yep I noticed that, there is a weird bulge and yet another thing to fix..............don't know what Mr Revell was thinking here !!

DSC_0182_zps3df36da1.jpg

Here's how it should look,

https://www.flickr.com/photos/nigelblake/6711416651/sizes/l/

Rob, the GR1/4's are certainly noisy beasts..the difference between the two was that the GR.1/4's use the RB199-34R-103 and the F.3 had the RB199-34R-104 which had a modified reheat giving out a bit more power......can't say I noticed any difference, they were both bone shattering...... but maybe there was..

Well we still get the odd GR4 trundling in over the house during the week...so all's not lost...

Pete, I don't have an Italeri jobbie to hand.................it's being held in the interrogation room for further questioning ......all these slots and bleeding parts .........pass the nurse old fella ! :bouncy:

Shaun, yep, shows it well...I have the gap sorted, notice also that the glove topside bows up slightly on the wing side....

Anthony, thanks, grab the seals they're well worth it....

Just about finished detailing the navs gubbins for now...orf to the paint shop then onto the final bit of plumbing............all it needs is a Chevy big block to sit on and we're ready to race !!

We are making quite a list of errors on this kit.

May be someone could make fin tip correction in resin?

What has gone on here, where did the info come from?

This a good shot of the fin tip-

Time to get the file out!

Shaun.

Yep it's a pity Shaun but nothing that can't be dealt with using a bit of basic DIY. I'm just surprised that a subject with so much reference material is let down by such poor basic research...

I'm not sure what's going on with the fin tip...it's not just a little wrong, it's way off. A new resin replacement sounds like a grand plan !!

As regards the noise I just remember whenever I was an an airshow the gr1 always seemed to be louder and crisper sounding to me.

Not that it matters just a memory as a kid louder was always appreciated.

That tail cap looks more like a vulcans than a tornados it looks way to fat. Should be straight and thin memory serves me.

I always thought they has similar tail shapes from the side but not top.

Looks like more sanding await await you.

;)

Rob,

The noise difference is not really perceptable, just a better reheat and extended jet pipes...As for working on them, I much prefered the GR1 to the F3, I was unlucky enough to work on both, and the ADV should never have been, a god awful Fighter, I'll give it it's due, looked like a fish, went like a fish, but steered like a cow!!! The Lightning should have been upgraded!!! But hey ho...And on the point of noise...Roll on next year, when, hopefully, there will be BOTH Lightnings AND a Tonka screaming up the runway at Bruntingthorpe...The noise I miss is the reverse thrust sound!!! Sends shivers up my spine!!! LOL

Zone, yes I've heard the same thing...not really missed by anyone , can only imagine what they thought of the Typhoon on their first ride...as I mentioned a friend of mine who was a backseater on them came from Buccaneers and would have gladly swopped ships....50's tech or not. A lot of duct tape was sacrificed to keep these things flying...

Spent a fair bit of time sanding the fin tip to shape due to the fact that not only is the tip too wide but the whole top 1/4 of the entire fin is too !!!....this required the whole piece to be hard sanded and all the panel lines rescribed......which wasn't a whole heap of fun ! It seems that the fin has some weird diamond shape thing going on in plan view and this needs to be flattened, but in turn it's very easy to sand through the locating lugs on the inside of the fin tip....ask me how I know ! These were filled with CA and sanded down so all is now good in the hood.........but what a strange model this is !

Post sweatwork.......right I'm off to take a cold shower....

Makes you wonder who will ever bring out "the perfect model" doesnt it?

I always thought this one was pretty durned close

Another example of how wrong I can be

But after all that setbacking Melchie, you seem to be on the mark again

Nice woyk guvner

It seems to me they would have been better up scaling their 1/72 or downsizing the 32nd kit.

Which to my eye looks the best Tornado kit I had seen.

Makes you wonder if Airfix will do another Tornado. Be nice if Tamiya did one.

Rob :)

Cheers Bill old flower, you're right...I also thought that this one was pretty near the mark going by all the positive comments and lyrical waxing going on. Don't get me wrong it's a great kit but the silly avoidable mistakes are hard to fathom......

I know next to nothing about other Tornado kits Rob as the only other one I ever built was way back in 1992, a little 1/72nd ESCI chap with the Airwaves slotted and slatted wings, in filthy and battered desert yuck ! Now a Tamiya effort would be nice but then so would an airfix...though it would have to be 1/24th for me....

We stuck them back on with Araldite.

And I bet they fell off again !...........Pete Araldite eh, another addition to the duct tape, insulation and gaffer tape, clingfilm and plastic sheeting that go into the high tech 'make do and mend ' maintenance of these prestige beasts !!....(one of the F.3's at Coningsby apparently suffered a nasty fire on startup for no apparent reason, when the charred spine and fin were taken apart there was more duct tape in there than in my loft....one section actually had Wickes written across it.................. it was back on the front line in no time much to the disappointment of everyone involved !)....

I've been cracking on with the rest of the kit, airbrakes aren't the best fit...but are they ever ?, you really need to take your time fettling the edges of the fuselage to get the best fit though the fin fits beautifully as do the spoilers. Tailplanes just pushed in for now, the engine exhaust and reverser units go in last........looking more like a Tornado.....

Yep. Getting there.

Now, how about the clamshell covers for the Taileron pivots?

Airfix et al never managed to get them right.

I've lost count of the ones I've scratchbuilt.

How about this kit? He asked, sidling away for cover.....

Looking great, Still a great kit despite the flaws. I am not eagle eyed on the detail with the Tornado in every respect despite it being one of my all time Favourite Aircraft, But to me so far I cant see what was so wrong with their old tooling. I believe there was an issue with the fin somewhere near the root of it.

The big improvement on this kit seems to be the way it goes together with the one piece belly. That is a nifty idea.

I would still like to make one of these though. The last attempt at 48th ones I had was as a kid in about 1994/5 doing the italeri F3 and GR1. Happy memories and fun times. I made a right pigs ear of them but they went together ok.

Cheers Rob ;)

True Rob...kinda gets the old juices flowing .......which at my age is not necessarily all that desirable ................................nurse, the bucket please  !!!

OK, right well I've been busy juggling a few builds today, ( the memsahib has given me time off for good behavior) and as such was able to crack on with this one.

It's a good idea to follow the destructions for this bit !...........I thought I'd be clever and join the intakes before adding them to the fuselage....luckily I tried them first as they should be fitted in separate halves and you'll have a bit of a job trying to force the built parts into place. Luckily the glue was still wet and I was able to open the parts up, let them dry, sanded and then did what I should have done in the first place ....follow the instructions !!

To make life easier I remembered to spray the sidewalls of the fuselage BEFORE adding the intakes as masking this area afterwards would be a right PITA to put it mildly,

Once done the inner intake half was added....the reason it should be done this way is that there is a recess the the fuselage into which the inner face stub fits and it's very difficult to add after the two pieces are glued together......remember to add the upper variable intake ramp at this point too, the holes are there so that you can 'swing' the ramp into the position you want.....if the aircraft's parked up then they should be fully up....

DSC_0219_zps0236c682.jpg

Before fitting the outers I went over the whole model with Mr Dissolved Putty with a cocktail stick and damp swab to fill in all the thin seams. The fit of the parts is extremely good but I always like to seal everything with this stuff as it's very fine and gets into all the tiny gaps...

DSC_0223_zps2ebd5ca4.jpg

It's great stuff and as you can see gets rid of seams effortlessly..

DSC_0226-001_zps1c2dfca3.jpg

The outer halves clip into place nicely, the upper piece, (seen here at the bottom) has yet to be pushed into place,

DSC_0221_zps443fbb51.jpg

When fitting the gloves I found it was a good idea to glue the front edges together first for a perfect join rather than follow the instructions advice of gluing the top one onto the upper wing first followed by the underside one...way too much chance of a poor join to me. They then just slide over the wing and clip into place with a very satisfying click.

DSC_0222_zpse60f4b94.jpg

One interesting thing noted by Shaun elsewhere is that the intake tunnels seem to bow in too quickly and don't follow the contour of the fuselage, (making having the relief doors open interesting), but to be honest it isn't really that noticeable and would require a lot of work to rectify which just isn't warranted in my 'umble opinion......

The lower central vane was only fitted to the port intake...

The wing 'gloves' aren't glued at this time just resting against the fuselage hence the slight gap...

Just weathering the reheat units, navs console and the Mk 10A seats at the moment................more piccies a bit later,

Thanks for looking.....

Cheers all,

Thanks Andy, appreciated.......I know how you feel about the old girl !

The reheat units have been sprayed using Alclad metallics including duralumin and steel, over sprayed with a dash of pale burnt metal then ochre and light dirt mig pastels have been applied with a small sponge to the reheat rings. The interior of the pipes have been sprayed with Alclad magnesium and then light runs of heavily thinned Tamiya smoke........

The great thing about this unit is that it can be slid into the fuselage right at the end of the build.....

DSC_0206-001_zpse8c73e06.jpg

All bunged together and the effect is quite pleasing..........lovely detail here Mr Revell ! (hardly any of this will be seen of course but that's never stopped me before :coolio: !).

DSC_0208_zps56b10822.jpg

I've also now finished the seats. As noted earlier by the main body straps were laid back over the headrest and clipped to the back of the chute pack. I removed the moulded straps and gave the back pack a light coat of Perfect Putty to give a bit more texture and added the Eduard IDS ones, folding them over themselves and stowed as per photos. In case you were wondering why the waist straps are 'flying in the breeze' the reason is that the waist ones are angled so that they sit out horizontally across the side consoles. The blue leg restraints are made from blue dog tape cut into thin strips. Next will be to finish fitting out the cockpit,

Cheers all,

M

Don't forget the arm restraint lines General Sir. They are white in colour with metallic green quick release boxes on the ends. They follow the leg lines through the seat pan and are pinned to the floor with the leg lines.

Happy days

I've opened the doors on my build!, thats how I noticed this error.

Your making good progress.

Thanks scoots, I'll add em as soon as........

Shaun, yep, I won't be opening the doors here for that very reason.......regarding the vid, the sound reminds me of the 'orrible sound of someone manually ramming the zoom lens back into place on an expensive SLR !!

The main area on the kit that really requires a bit of care and patience are the intakes as sadly the fit isn't the best. Three parts meet here and lining them all and taking time to line them all up is key to a good result. I try not to use filler wherever there is delicate detail so a lot of time filing, sanding and dry fitting pays off....

DSC_0256_zps44bf3720.jpg

I'll slide the variable incidence ramps in later, also fitted the slightly modded IRLS line scan pod from the Airfix kit....

DSC_0258_zps67bf7ef8.jpg

The nose cone is another area that needs a bit of work as the fuselage side is slightly concave which results in a nasty rim where the cone butts up to it. A couple of coats of Mr Surfacer 500 should sort that out....

The small triangular aerial ahead of the windscreen needs removing and shifting off centre to the right...

Sigh........beeeeeeeautiful...

I have inappropriate feelings of affection for such wonderful objects.......

So much so that I will squash the irritating pedant within and will raise not even a metaphorical eyebrow at the idea of 'feet restraints'........

Ooops........:)

Hands up if you wish you could build seats like that :)
