Revell 1/48th RAF Tornado GR1A.......

Recommended Posts

Thanks fellas, your kind comments are always very much appreciated,

Bill...just chuck a few whirlycopter deck chairs this way and I'll sort em for you !...(are you going to Newark on Sunday?, if so bring the wee fella with you.........if not, don't !)

Rob....I know how much you put into it all, and having seen you play how damn talented you are......wish you'd been about when I was learning guitar...and that's a fact !

Clanad theme they used to play with the Vulcan

Now that takes me back...Greenham Common, 1983 post Falklands and XM597 was doing her stuff with truly heroic gusto to the strains of Clannads 'Harrys game'....don't think there was a dry eye in the house...never has music fitted a flying performance so perfectly even to the point of seemingly applying all that power and cutting off at the right segments in the song........awesome stuff. Don't like to get all ethereal about such things but there was an eerie silence after she landed.....'twas spooky.

Just out of interest take a look at what a proper airshow line up used to consist of back in the day..............great site, brings back a lot of memories, well worth a browse.

Funny you should mention Caroline...that was one of the first pieces I learnt to play, (badly, if that's possible!) ! :clif:

You'll be fine.......love to see you play Satch's mighty turtle head or time machine....!...oh yeah baby...groooovy.

The Bucc's coming on ta, just scribing and more scribing.......oh and LOTS of sanding, I'll post stuff on it a bit later on when there's something to see but I have a few mag articles to finish first as you know...I'm afraid they take precedence as they come in.......deadlines = getting paid..lol

Re the Tornado I've just noticed a few small details to add to the seats...........today I'll be having at the gear bays .........anyone know a good plumber ?

Cheers Andy I do my best but its never good enough. I realise on now returning to gigging and sorting my musical life out how similar it is to modelling and the modelling focus on detail is making me break music down and explore it even more so than before.

It's funny how many art forms writing music film and modeling seem I follow a pattern of construction methods and disapline but also have freedom to express within each stage I guess that's the attraction to it all.

Defiantly looking forward to returning to the model bench as well as the stage but I'm getting modelling withdrawal I need to paint something ;)

Cheers Rob :)

The basic plumbing is now in,....nose gear bay,

DSC_0080_zps5236b79d.jpg

The main bays.....funnily enough most of the cabling is on the legs and extension jacks, the bays are relatively clear of gubbins.....and this will need to be added to the legs before fitting,

Next up painting the pipes and weathering....

Only a small update, but whilst looking at a few walkaround photogs of the pit I noticed that Revell seem to have oversimplified the 'parcel shelf' between the pilots seat and nav's box of tricks......there's a whole strip missing making the shelf too narrow so that the end of the CRT'S and CPMD seemingly dangle in space, (at least they didn't add a big, thick bulkhead), so I've added these pieces plus a few added details to make it more representative,

Painted, the wiring now goes where it should...........still a bit more gubbins to add but it's getting there.

How about a Vulcan ? :coat:

Hahahaha ! , Yes my builds are about as predictable as your battle tactics against the Hun over No man's land,

"Building another Vulcan is exactly the last think they will expect this time"

Cheers Rob :)

Thanks guys...

Rob, E-E- Exactly...........And that is what so brilliant about it! We will catch the watchful Hun totally off guard! Doing precisely what you have done eighteen times before is

exactly the last thing they'll expect you to do this time!

In this IDS boxing Revell supply the main body of the LRMTS but not the front end glazing, (well, makes sense from a marketing point of view...who would bother buying the GR1/4 when it comes out if all the bits bar the decals are in the box !), so I needed to replace the parts myself. Luckily I had an old 1/48th Airfix buried deep in the stash and was able to retrieve a few parts for re use on this model. The glazed section is a good fit, though it does need a bit of fettling to fit perfectly. Looking at a few piccies of the unit it can be seen that the lens is very obvious and therefore must be included if it's to look right. I drilled out the rear of the kits unit using a 4mm bit then attached a 2.5mm Little-Cars lens cover,(dipped in Klear and minus the silver backing) and attached this to a shaped piece of shaped white card. A hole was drilled through this too for depth and then the whole thing glued to a piece of matt black card. The front of the unit was then painted white and the lens piece fitted using Gator glue. The effect works pretty well,

As a side note Shaun also produces resin replacement LRMTS's himself which would make things easier for those without the parts...

Another item that needs addressing is the BOZ-107 chaff/flare pod. Revell seem to have got the rear end a little wrong. It should cant out slightly away from the fuselage side and they have it as angled back and perfectly vertical. One way to fix it would be to cut the rear end off roughly 5mm from the end and rotate it slightly and reattach but I decided it would be a lot neater just to carefully sand it to the correct angle, being careful not to lose too much length. The inner plate is also at the wrong angle, (though it would be correct if you went for the first method of cutting the rear end and re attaching it), so I cut the location lug off the plate and rotated the piece so that it lined up correctly. There are two pipes that need to be added in here too. Revell have depicted the end piece in the unloaded config and I think it was Spike here who pointed out that quite often they could be seen with the rear cover fitted. On most of the photos I have of the RAFG 2 squadron machines this was the case so I cut an appropriate piece of 1mm card and drilled out the 14 holes needed. There is a deflection piece fitted to the outer surface which mustn't be forgotten about when drilling the holes !,

I also drilled out the tiny holes in the inner plate, the two tubes should line up with two smaller holes on the new end plate, (yes,it's worth adding them as you can see them through the holes..)

Here you can hopefully see the deflection angle of the rear end of the pod....

I also added the small flow vanes to the mid section. These are angled upward slightly, (I Assume they're to do with airflow smoothing)

.

Next to add the rear end plate and sand to shape.....then move on to the Skyshadow pod...

Nothing exciting, but I've added the end plate to the BOZ and just need to scribe the edge of the top left section, like the sky shadow the fins were way too thick and needed sanding....

DSC_0139_zpse5770e98.jpg

Not to be outdone by the BOZ Revell have got the sky shadow detail wrong too....for some reason they've simplified the shape and placed the cooling intake on the centreline instead of offset to the right and forgotten about the smaller fairing to the left altogether, so these were added with scrap card. As with the BOZ the fins were too thick and so were sanded down to a more accurate section,

Now the two pods are ready for priming...back to the aeroplane...

General Sir, are you depicting the BOZ Pod loaded with flares or unloaded. If unloaded the rear plate should be one large hole.

The walkround section on the Tonka has an excellent picture of an unloaded pod taken from the back end. The plate you have created is actually the rear of the flare crate and that will only be loaded with flares before fitting in the pod.

Seems a shame to not be able to see the superb detail you've put into the rear end of the pod.

Happy days
