The Amerika Fighter

I'm nt sure if I've covered everything, the big gap has left me not sure what I've posted and what I haven't. There's also a few gaps in my pictures. Sorry for any confusion this has caused.

Last night, I got a bit of time on this beastie, and I passed a milestone. First exterior paint!

P9170061_zps6ae5229c.jpg

Just a rough coat for now. There'll be at least one more before I call it done. I'm also planning on picking out a few pannels in different shades (I'll explain in the final story)

Anyhow, this will be the last update for the next few days, as I'll be out of town,

Cheers,

K

Alrighty! It's update time!

P9180062_zpsfadc9acb.jpg

This will be the basis of the underside paint job modifications will come later)

P9180063_zpsdcbc3c1c.jpg

In an attempt to re-create some if the rather odd late war camo schemes I've decided to use some liquid mask. It looks bad and smells worse, but it does work (at least, it has before)

Last of all, a little bit is scheme planning.

Cheers,

May the Fourth be with you

We have decals (not all of them, but some)

P9220071_zps9f617dbd.jpg

P9220072_zpsfc1d71aa.jpg

Decals for the back half are all on (I think) there'll be more up front* in the next couple of days.

Anyway, that's it for this (very brief) update.

Cheers,

K

Decals are done, and more! :D

This particular plane survived a belly landing, and had had many of the pannels on the bottom replaced.

Just to add some colour (actually, the pilot of this aircraft did this so that he could more easily see his rudders during checks)

A Descision has been made!

She wil be wheels up, because the gear I built wasn't going to work out.

I made new gear doors, the originals didn't for well:

E11675D4-1FE9-4E99-A7E8-1594E3DE541C_zps

A bit of scribing will be needed

The unfortunate thing about wheels up is pilots are required. That meant chopping out the seat belts.

59C90903-819B-4C93-AE0A-8486DF033FC7_zps

And pulling out every pilot figure I own, the mashing them together into something that fits in the cockpit.

242F126C-2EB3-4DA6-BBEE-299FDA6E74A9_zps

Here's the pilot

And now he's got his glue setting in position

3BFEEC95-93BF-4060-A80C-3014B75A1DDF_zps

The navigator was far simpler, only surgery needed was on his legs.

25FA0AAA-9ED0-4725-8456-9FCE0E184EF0_zps

And that's all. Modifying figures is incredibly time consuming. As for painting them... Tips anyone?

Cheers,

K

Next progress :)

Got the big 30mm canon into place.

C60B5102-F6D3-4BFC-BA84-E86AB9E28D0A_zps

Note the super high tech jig

Next up was to start painting the pilots.

Used some beige on the faces, and to make sure I got rid of the mould lines, at least in the heads.

1C10E36D-62BC-483E-8000-8AD58FF87ED8_zps

Next up was some basic base painting. I've made the jackets different colours, just for variety.

EE7E9EC6-CB48-4D68-BC83-7C8B9A3EBBF5_zps

I'm using this as my reference.

6BD31BC2-701E-4CAF-B0D9-D579D4400457_zps

I won't be able to add this much detail, but I can always try :D

Alrighty! Next update!

For the base of the big 30mm painted.

394D0224-55C9-4C6E-BC4C-15953466F1DF_zps

There was some filling involved to fair it in too.

Both canopies painted up and aerials added. The canopy with less framing is the pilot's. They were a new development, even better than the Erla Haube canopies.

576AB040-F52C-40C9-B28A-739A11F1683C_zps

Canopies were left aluminum from the factory for simplicity. The RIOs canopy is not as bright because its older than the pilot's.

Also painted up the landing gear covers.

5BF3E80E-B1A7-408F-9FBF-6B8FAE72257C_zps

These are aluminum because both the originals were severly damaged in this aircraft's belly landing.

Landing gear doors were then glued in place.

BBEA0B95-13B2-437C-9886-AEA426F1CD9C_zps

You can see the many different colour pannels here too.

Also did a test fit on the belly tanks

EC2448CA-C643-4C8F-B87C-44FEC2D42B06_zps

Theses will need to be glued, as they don't fit very tightly.

I did some test fitting with the RIO's canopy, and realized that the fit wasn't great, so I did this:

78E27755-8253-4043-869C-8290AF286B3E_zps

Fit is much better now

EB407182-08DE-487A-A3E4-CB6BE7D8DE41_zps

The corners on my shim will need a little sanding, then it'll have to be painted up. I'll probably have to do the same thing on the pilot's canopy too.

Well, it's getting closer and closer to completion. Although it still need weathering, the next update will probably show this beastie all together, and the one after that might show it finished. Wow, I'm actually almost there. It's a bit of a relief, because this one has been on the bench for a very long time.

Cheers,

K
