Tim Moff
All masked up for the DG - having looked, I have missed some DSG areas, will need to touch up after: Big and little Sabre!
Procopius
What paper is that you're using to mask? It looks a bit more effective than my attempts to mask camo.
Tim Moff
lol, its just plain old house decorators masking tape, rather than use the expensive Tamiya for big areas....not painted and tried to take it off yet!! However I have masked from blu tac to blu tac. will try to paint tonight!
Tim Moff
Well got some DG on: And together! Next - unmask, attend to any DSG, tail fin grey, nav lights etc!!
nimrod54
Hey Tim, sorry buddy I have only just caught up with this again. Looking very good, I like the brushed pre-shading, it just goes to show that you don't need anything fancy to achieve that shaded look to the panels. Well done.
Tim Moff
Cheers Nimrod...still not sure tbh, maybe a finer brush and a bit neater next time! will see tomorrow when the tape comes off! Tim Moff
Had a really enjoyable day modelling, done the big reveal, a few touch ups and lil issues, but in the most part really happy!! Ironically, same issue as in the 1/48, had to brush paint a bit over a paint build up on the Port Wing caused by the bluetac....hopefully will lose it during the Klear/Varnish process..... Big and Lil Sabre - starting to look the part I hope!! Next then, final check and touch ups, a couple of Klear coats....gonna use Humbrol Klear rather than the Pledge, try to get a better finish for the panel lines.....Decals on, bit of Florys dark dirt, in the lines only - I think National Service saw lots of nice clean aircraft so weathering will be minimal....however I have seen pics of some right old states!! So, I have done my best, paint jobs seem to be improving, really enjoying these Sabres!!
nimrod54
You're making good progress Tim and your skills will improve with each model that you build. If you compare your Harrier builds with these then I bet you will see big improvements in all areas. Looking good, keep it up.
Tim Moff
Cheers Nimrod, I really liked the 1/48 GR9, it was a challenge and I think it came out well....the Sabres look handsome in their camo, $ay well have to revisit the Jag (was gonna do arctic camo) the Buc (was gonna do Telic Desert Cam) and the Hawk (was gonna do the black)...the traditional DG and DSG is looking good! Also have an FG1 that was gonna be grey!
Cookenbacher
Your masking worked out great - I like 'em both.
Tim Moff
Cheers all.....just remasked and paint the demarcation line to the rear, bought a bit higher, may leave the last line....but hey....need to properly look at the references, think I had the top of the Tamiya where the bottom should have been!!! Doh!!
Tim Moff
Ok, to balance things out, I also started on the 1/72 Sabres decals and stencils....another 4 hr session! Just a quick thanks to Giorgio N in Italy who made the serial numbers for the fuselage and wings......they went on great and were fairly easy to handle - he made and sent them to Colchester in the UK for free....thanks again! Everything seemed to go on fine, literally 2 cockpit decals and a nose wheel JEJ and the blue fin band from the huge modeldecal set! The rest from the RAF box decals, which are really good....still some way to go, this is stencil nightmare!! Have had to paint the red patch on the front wheel cover for the JEJ decal....must check instructions in the future!!! So far so good, back to work tomorrow so it would be good to get them done and some Klear on tonight!! Happy modelling!
Tim Moff
Ok, so Decaling done....the trauma!!Given a shot of Humbrols Clear to seal them in and now laid up until I am off next. Finishing will be an attempt at Florys on the panel lines, and not too much else as the pictures all look fairly clean. Then I will look at a Satin finish....any recommendations for a good satin airbrush finish, as I only have matt Humbrol at the moment?
Procopius
Do you have Microsol products in the UK? I use Micro-satin, and it answers nicely.
Tim Moff
Cheers Procopius, will have a look, we get the Decal kits. Appreciate the advice.
Giorgio N
Only glad to help Tim ! For a satin finish, vallejo has one that sprays very wel... however it's not a proper satin, it's more of a "not too matt" finish. I like this a lot and often use it to reproduce smooth matt finishes, but these Sabres were more glossy than the vallejo paint. One alternative is to mix varnishes, for example on USN glossy types I use a mix of vallejo gloss and satin.
Cookenbacher
Tim, you could also go for Winsor & Newton acrylic varnishes. I used them on my Harriers for the first time and liked them - matt on the AV-8B and a mix of matt and gloss to make a satin for the GR7.
Tim Moff
Well, the Satin Varnish is on, just need to finish off now...tanks, cockpits, canopys etc...hopefully before my holiday on Sunday! Now the canopy......clearly the frame is too small scale wise....I had to introduce some masking tape, paint to make the frame bigger so the JEJ Decal would fit!!
DannyB
Cracking work Tim, both of these came out really well!
Tim Moff
Ok then, calling this finished - fairly happy - issues as ever with canopy fits and scale, white glue etc....and the struts for the tanks are nails to get on as was the 1/48!! Johnnie Johnson was a real boys own hero, who helped defeat the Nazi menace in WWII - having now read his 2 books, I know this is nowhere near enough fitting tribute to him - however it is an honor to build this aircraft - I am sure there will be some Spitfires in the future!! Thanks for all your support and help, enjoyed this GB!
Cookenbacher
Great pair of builds Tim - they look very cool wheels up and are a fitting tribute. I read Johnnie Johnson's 'The Story of Air Fighting' many times over the years - just looked at my tattered copy on the shelf.
nimrod54
Great job Tim, your son is going to have a nice collection. It brings back memories of my ceiling as a kid, except that mine were mainly civil types. For some reason 'Mrs Nimrod54' won't allow me to do that, personally I think that she is being unreasonable after all it would allow me to get more in the cabinet.

Procopius
Funny my long haired general has had a moan....but hey its a boys room so tough! Huh, my wife approved my request to build a mobile of a Spitfire in hot pursuit of a smoking 109 in the event of offspring.
