Tim Moff
Well, I done 1/72 and 1/48 for the Harrier build, so will try with the Sabre......just have to see which one I will do if I get the ModelDecal 97 set - does anyone know if I get the serial numbers or do I need to get them from another sheet? Well part 2 of Tims group build, baby size Sabre!!
chrisrope
You will need another source for the serials

Tim Moff
Just received my Modeldecal set 97 and have decided to portray XB686, as flown by Gp Capt J.E. Johnson, who was the Station Commander at RAFG Wildenwrath circa 1955. 'Johnnie' Johnson was the highest scoring Western Allied fighter ace against the German Luftwaffe. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnnie_Johnson_(RAF_officer) I have some Red paint and the guide below (apart from the black and white pic with the decal set, this seems to be the only reference!) Just need to Beg Steal or Borrow 2 x underwing 16in serials and 2 x 8in fuselage serials! Edited August 23, 2014 by Tim Moff
Cookenbacher
Really enjoyed your Harriers Tim, looking forward to seeing your Sabres.
Procopius
Great choice, the Sabre I plan on building from that sheet too. The great JE-J was one of my heroes, and he replied to ten-year-old Procopius's letter in the very early 1990s with an autographed copy of Wing Leader.
Tim Moff
Thanks guys! Procopius, sorry if I have stolen your thunder! I looked at the other options on the sheet and JE-J jumped out at me - I am doing a 4 Sqn 1/48 and didn't want to just duplicate that. Amazing story - what a guy to send you a signed copy of his book! Now it says on the Modeldecal sheet that the Sabres paint was gloss (apart from the grey tail tip) so I plan to varnish it in gloss....anyone out there think it should actually be matt, if so should the red gloss just be varnished gloss, the rest matt?
Procopius
No thunder stolen! JE-J is big enough for everyone. If I have too much to drink I may try and make one of the silver-bellied fighter command ones for this GB, otherwise I'm all GB'ed out. As for paint, as it happens, I have a copy of the RAF Sabre bible, the imaginatively-titled SABRE: The Canadair Sabre in RAF Service, and it states that "[the scheme] consisted of gloss dark green 641 and dark sea grey 638 uppers, with cerulean (PRU) blue 636 undersides." This was done at the MUs before allocation to squadrons. So gloss for sure.

Tim Moff
Just managed to snaffle a good quality 2nd hand copy of the RAF Sabre guide from Amazon! Don't normally bother as the InterWeb seems to cater for most things, but expect it will be an interesting read!

I did exactly the same as you (it's my only reference book) but it's worth it.Sean
Giorgio N
The Sabre at Hendon is so gloss you can almost use it as a mirror... The paint was indeed gloss and it was only later that RAF aircrafts were painted in a more eggshell finish, I have a list of all the relavant DTDs and their introduction dates somewhere.. Of course pictures of operational aircrafts don't show airframes as gloss as the one in Hendon, and a 1/72 scale model would not look good in a true gloss finish, so personally I'd mix gloss and matt or satin varnish to achieve an effect that looks right. Speaking of "that" book, it's a great book and worth snatching for anyone interested in cold war RAF. The amount of information it contains is unbelieveable, although it's not strictly a modeller book For the serial numbers, if you can't find them send me a PM, I can print a set for you
Tim Moff
Thanks Giorgio N for the tip - Maybe I should go for a satin finish...??
Tim Moff
Well got on with the cockpit, working with the 1/48 Academy Sabre as it is also RAF so using same paints/colours etc! OOB Cockpit, with decals, all went on ok Apologies for the BB pic, 1950's pilot all painted up and ready to go! All closed up, awaiting the wings (1/48 seat and pilot in background!!)! May have to tape off and fill/sand the seams.... Definite issue with Tail/fuselage join...will have to do something with the leftover panel line....all fitted correctly and aligned...?? Big Brother (RAF Academy 1/48) and lil brother....building together as the paints will all work together....how cute!! remember I am a novice and 1/72 seems a bit wee for me...all will go on the ceilings so don't be too harsh! Hopefully get it mainly built and primed before work on Monday! Hope all your builds are going well! Edited August 27, 2014 by Tim Moff

Tim Moff
Well, along with the 1/48 big brother, got some more holes filled today, canopy and windshield mask (not sure best way forward - the canopy frame will be red with the tail, so probably needs fixing right at the end - may hand paint, although will be spraying the tail so may mask inside and try spraying....same with windshield, except its DSG, so again may spray when I do the main cam. Although its a nice kit, there are a few issues, the nose cone fit is not great, had to use some tape to get it on nice and snug. Also the dry fit of the canopy has some issues with the seat and canopy gubbins behind it. All sits correct and flush at the nose gear end, so not sure why. Airbreaks are not a great fit, again a few gaps.... Fuel tanks were a bit fiddly too.....again will look at the seams.....gonna be a bit of putty and sanding for a teeny tiny model!! And big and lil brother together - sorry pic out of focus! Off to Halfords (run out primer!) Am debating using white to assist with the DSG cam - also getting a can of grey - any thoughts/opinions?? Hope all your builds are going well! Tim Moff
Ok, so got the wings on, most holes closed, pretty much built - just need to fill and sand those seems and set about the panel scribing with my trusty no9 blade!! Not moving the wing fences in 8mm......not quite ready for that yet!! Big gaps to fill around the nose wheel doors! Masked up ready for some putty on the main join seams....I have a habit of putting it everywhere (never any good at DIY!) so the masking protects from stray putty and sanding down detail afterwards!! And the customary lil and large picture!! Close to getting the primer on over the weekend (Children and Long Haired General dependent!!) Enjoy the weekend, happy building!! AnonymousDFB1
Not moving the wing fences in 8mm......not quite ready for that yet!! Was wondering if you would, only just learnt that they're in the wrong place.
Tim Moff
Well, filling and sanding done (not my best skill at all!) Now primed, a few runs etc...... will just have to sand it back and crack on..... Will brush paint some panel lines to pre-shade....may even get the DSG on tomorrow!! Big an Lil Sabre..... Tim Moff
Pre-shaded the 1/72 as well, using a brush - not something I normally do, but hey lets see.....next will need to mask up ready for the anti-glare paint, red tail section and the underneath and see what time I have! Happy modeling!!
Tim Moff
Well got the red Fin and Canopy painted and the PRU Blue on...... Initial coat over black preshade on white primer - lesson learnt is to use grey primer.....! Looks a bit better with a thin 2nd coat......with its big brother!! Typically the ip/nib on my Iwata Neo CN broke during cleaning, so a new 1 has been ordered and I am now back at work, so all on hold til next week now, will need to re-mask for the cam. happy modelling Tim
Cookenbacher
The pre-shading worked great Tim. Looking forward to the camo.
Tim Moff
Well got the DSG on, didn't go on as well as paint has before....had some issues with the trigger, when release air continued to flow, causing a few runs. Not sure if the pre-shading has been covered enough.....will have to re-assess before either dusting on another light coat or masking up with blue-tac and Tamiya before shooting some DG. and lil and big Sabre...... Interesting Blue tinge - must be the light!! Hope the Gloss Klear coat for decaling will sort things....looking at the 1.48, think I may dust another coat!! Received my RAF Sabres book, interesting read and great for references......shame there is no colour pic of JEJ's aircraft....however the description covers the red tail, red front wheel door with JEJ initials, red canopy frame with initials. Should be enough to go on! Happy modelling!
