Yugoslav Hawker Fury - Update 21/09: Decals, wheels and propeller!

Recommended Posts

A bit more progress: here are the home-printed decals, the white identity numbers, some serials and an effort at the lifting point markings. The identity marks are on solid white decal paper, so will need very careful trimming to get right. The shine doesn't make photographing any easier!

Here she is with the ID numbers and serials on, plus propeller, wheels and wheel centres. The latter are a pig of a thing to work with: they are too large a diameter for the recess, and need sanding and scraping extensively to fit satisfactorily. Also, pushing them in and popping them out to check the fit is fraught because the curved axles are pretty delicate.

The propeller colours are pretty much a S.W.A.G. The photos look like the props were painted, possibly with aluminium dope, and the backs of the blades might have been black (as per a museum example I've seen). The spinners varied, some seem to be all in camoflage colours, some with the body in aluminium, some with the tip.

It's varnishes, a touch of shading and the windscreen to add and she's about done. The irony is I've managed to build this quicker than Airfix can send out a replacement unarmoured windscreen for my Hurricane!

Smart work Mitch, she's going to be a beauty.

I thought I had my internet memes down, but what is a S.W.A.G.?

I'm doing a Yugoslav Hurricane myself, with the Kora decals... they look a little thin and disappointing to be honest :weep:

Cheers,

Stew

S.W.A.G = Scientific Wild Ar**d Guess - an inference, hopefully plausible, based on data roughly half the thickness of a cigarette paper!

I know what you mean about Kora decals. They're superbly sharp, and the print is spot-on but they are a bit translucent. But they're the only game in town for these subjects (as far as I can establish) so we like it or lump it, I guess. I used them on my Bf 109 and have a set for my Hurricane. I slipped up with the Bf: what I ought to have done was just blown in a section where the upper wing decals went with some white or pale grey. You'll be fine on the underside, but I'm going to underpaint the upper wing section when I do my Hurri

Hi Mitch,

Yes, you are pretty much right about the Kora decals being the only game in town for most of these markings, but I have ordered the Lift Here Decals set for the Hurricane and will see how they look when they arrive, if they seem more substantial I will probably use those. They might make a set which includes the Fury too, I can't remember, but most of their sets seem to be discontinued anyway :weep:

Cheers,

Stew

Stew, I've got the Kora set for my Hurri too - I found out about Lift Here too late! I'd be interested in hearing your results from LH - they have interesting stuff I'm slightly tempted by.

Mitch..

EXQUISITE build. ..... love the camoflage scheme.

and its wonderful to see other genres of aircrafts that WE

don't see much on here ; as some one said getting a bit of love; it makes for a Lovely change

from the spits and gnats and moths and chipmunks. . For ME personally

I like THIS . And Yugoslav is going to be different. .

{ before anyone says anything ..I do like spits etc but once in a while I like other stuff too}♥♡

KEEP UP the :goodjob:

I also found out about Lift Here! rather too late :weep: There is an early sheet that includes the Fury but that's out of stock everywhere I've looked.

I've been advised by others who have used them to double up light coloured Kora decals applied over a dark scheme which seems rather expensive, I think I'll try the light patch under the decal and then VERY carefully paint up to the edge with a hairy stick.

I suppose it's all part of the fun of going off the beaten track!

This is a very good build and excellent work
