Filler
Being the age I am, I was very familiar with this aircraft as it was regularly featured in the many 'Modern Jet Fighter' style books that I had around the time. They're even on the back of the Verlinden F-16A/B Lock-on book I bought this week. The prospect of this kit does seem to have caused a very minor storm. In the Kinetic Mirage III thread it has been brought up as a waste of resources when the operational Atlas Cheetah still hasn't been modeled. Well, I don't have any facts or evidence but I'd be willing to wager that there is far far greater sales potential for the F-16XL worldwide than the Atlas Cheetah. It does seem difficult at times for us to see the business mans point of view as opposed to our aircraft enthusiast/modeler perspective.

Mike
Could be interesting I don't really see much point in the "they shoulda built a...." argument though, as all it does is make everyone think you're a misery that suffers from sour grapes, when I'm sure it's not true at all. I'm sure that plenty of American modellers will build at least one, which on its own is a pretty large market, and makes the decision a sound one even before you consider the rest of the world. Anyone who likes F-16s, or just unusual variants and dead-end technology demonstrators will probably also consider one too. I'm not a big fanboy of the F-16 as a modeller*, but I'd probably have one of these on pure novelty value, and because it's funny looking Does anyone else think it looks like the love child of an F-16 and a Drakken? * Before the lynch party assembles, I have built one, and have at least 2 more in the stash. Am I safe now? I for one have never heard of an Atlas Cheetah does that make me a Luddite? If you are, then so am I.
Muzz
If memory serves an Atlas Cheetah is a development/upgrade of the Mirage III for the Latin American market! Away to check my memory hasn't failed me. I was close but no cigar! It's a South African development/upgrade of the Mirage III based on the Kfir, currently used by Ecuador. Giorgio N
If memory serves an Atlas Cheetah is a development/upgrade of the Mirage III for the Latin American market! Away to check my memory hasn't failed me. Almost... the Cheetah is an upgrade of the South African Mirage IIIs, heavily based on the IAI experience with the Kfir. Actually there have been several variants of the Cheetah and each of this is more or less different from the original design, with the Cheetah C being the one with the most changes (longer fuselage, single piece windscreen, different engine and a load of other differences). A number of Latin American Mirage III users have upgraded their aircrafts along similar lines, again with the involvement of IAI. The best known of these upgrades is the Chilean Pantera. Both the Cheetahs and the Pantera are very interesting aircrafts, but really a Pantera and a Cheetah E can be made from a Mirage III-E with a proper conversion set. The Cheetah C would require some more involved modification. The F-16Xl on the other hand is so different from a standard F-16 that any conversion would be almost a complete kit. Apart from the wings, the fuselage too is more heavily modified than it looks at first sight
The dragonborn
Does anyone else think it looks like the love child of an F-16 and a Drakken? I have a theory that it might have been inspired by the danish fighter-bomber drakens. Now just imagine the f-16xl in overall green.

Albeback52
Allan, your quite right and I have no interest in building a kit of the TSR 2 either or a Spitfire for that matter. I think it's fantastic that Kinetic and the like are releasing numerous new types. My point was I would imagine a kit would be more likely to sell well if the aircraft itself has a big following/fan base. The less airframes produced means, generally I would say, less people are likely to know about the type and therefore be interested in building a model of it. I would like Kinetic to be around for a while producing more kits. This is, as was my previous post, my opinion of course. You know, I think we're actually both in agreement here but maybe for different reasons! TSR 2 clearly has a big fan base despite the fact that is was, (through no fault of its own) a failure in that it never entered production or service.! The F-16 however is very widely produced and well known so, I think for that reason this kit will sell very well - even if only two XLs were built. It is after all another F-16. Now, I have no interest in F-16s either but, it's the fact that this version is so radically different to the bog standard 16 that attracts me to the kit. I have never built any existing version of a standard F-16 Allan Allan

The lynch party is probably after me instead!! I've never built an F-16 of any variant up till now. Boring aeroplane really!! The XL is the only variant that has ever tempted me to buy. rbeach84
Couple of notes: there were definitely 2 airframes (seen 'em flying side by side); design was in pursuit of greater load carrying and greater range - which it has in spades. That is why it went up against the F-15 Eagle as the next bomb truck. Of course, I have a conversion 65% complete using the wings from a "spare" Combat Models B-58, but suppose this kit will put paid to that project! Perhaps not - if the kit has two or more decal options, I could use the extras on my conversion build... hmmm. BTW, the "1:32 scale" Revell kit is a rebox of the predecessor Kangnam (or was it also 'Ace'?) which was an inaccurate Chinese knockoff of the Hasegawa F-16A kit where they simply made (undersized) 'XL wings to fit the unaltered 'A fuselage, which just looks strange. The real XL had two approx. 1 ft fuselage plugs applied that gives it a sleek, long look... R/ Robert
