Hi all,

As I finish the disaster that is my Starter Set GB Messerschmitt, first build for more than a year, I feel the need to get my eye back in before offering up an Edgar tribute Spit. A quick and dirty Hurricane or two feels in order, which will probably be Malta-based although I find myself eyeing a couple of SEAC Hurricanes in the stash as well.

I'll nail the lid down on my '109 and be right with you...

Question on the SEAC Hurris: Sky Blue or Grey underneath please??

No definite answer, and you really need to narrow down a time window.

though later, say post 1943 onwards Med Sea Grey best bet, DFS with Ocen Grey repainted with Dark Earth.

Some planes may well have been delivered in desert scheme, and had Mid Stone repainted in Dark Green, and thus have Azure Blue undersides.

Early on, Sky or maybe Sky Blue, this is still debated, have been threads on this.

Really, you need to pick a scheme, and ask specifically about that.

HTH?

I'm doing my 5 Sqn Hurricane IId from late 43->early 44 with Azure Blue underside - is that a reasonable choice? I don't have any concrete evidence for or against to be honest.

Nick Millman had a photo os a SEAC IId upon his blog (which is now invite only I think) called 'cheetah' which IIRC he thought was Azure blue underneath.

Do you have a photo and serial to work from?

AFAIK by mid war Hurricanes were either finished in DFS or Desert scheme at the factory, the last batches look to all be DFS, but this is an area that needs serious researching.

One problem is trying to judge underside colour from B/W photos.

Azure blue usually looks quite a dark tone, Med Sea Grey varies, Sky is usually very pale.

I would suggest this is Azure Blue, note the inside of the gear doors is the same as underside, as this shot of a desert scheme Hurricane shows

From the late date I'd suggest Med Sea Grey, but it does appear very dark.

I only know of one colour shot of a SEAC Hurricane,

Thanks Troy, I've got a serial number but not a photo. KW865 code Q - I sourced this from Fighter Squadron of the RAF

Been following the Burma hurricane desert scheme thread and I've consulted my previous research when I did the IIc in Burma a few years back, but I just wanted a second opinion and what you've shown supports my assumptions.

Hi. Can I please check that this GB definitely finishes on Thursday 28th April? I must admit I thought Group Builds finished on a Sunday night. If it does finish on the 28th (and not Sunday 1st May) then I will swap to my Spitfire GB project this weekend as I don't think I'll get my second Hurricane finished in just two weekends - not without me rushing it anyway. It's not a problem as I will finish off the Hurricane once I get the chance and will continue the build posts either here or in the WIP section. I'm also certain I won't be able to get the diorama I'd planned completed in that time anyway but, again, I'll work on that later.

Kind regards,

Stix

Hi there, yes it does finish at 23:59 GMT on Thursday 28th April.

Hi Doug. Okay - no problem - I will switch to my Spitfire build.

Thank you.

Kind regards,

Thanks, Troy. I'd like to do an Imphal Hurribomber if the decals allow - not many aftermarket sets for Indian Hurris it would seem!

I was reading some accounts from veterans of the defence and it was said that Imphal was one of the few times in the war when ground crew got to see their aircraft and ordnance in action, as the Japanese were less than a couple of miles away on more than one occasion.

I've got the standard kit decals from the Revell and new tool Airfix Iic to play with... there is KZ353 and LB957 and both look like they were built at Brooklands in spring/summer 1943. They could potentially have been in the theatre before the end of the year I suppose.

I guess both would look rather similar to this one, pictured in Burma:

Thanks and apologies for the earlier wooliness!

1 - painted aluminium, as are all the internal areas apart from cockpit walls and rear bulkhead.

HTH

Would this apply to inside the wing hinge line and the inner surface of the flaps too?

Good luck to anyone still trying to get their Hurricane completed by midnight tonight! :frantic::thumbsup:

We've got a Gallery full of wonderful builds so far but it would be good to have more!!!

I'm afraid this was another GB I had to pass... But the finished builds are inspirational for when I have the time to build my rag-wing Airfix Hurri plus Eduard PE.

I did complete but stupidly didn't get round to taking any WIP photos so it became ineligible for the gallery :( Never mind I enjoyed building the Hurricane IID anyway.

Yes, good luck to anyone trying to get in under the wire at midnight.

The entries in the gallery all look fantastic, some really great builds in there. It's not my intention to have a poll as it can let people down if they don't get any votes after all the hard work they've put into it. To my shame I haven't completed my entry due to a terminal loss of modelling mojo.

Had several key things change in my life this year, some good, some...not so good so I apologise for my lack of attendance on here during the GB, but I hope people have enjoyed it. A special mention goes to Tony O, a really great effort there Tony.

Also thanks to Troy and the other 'boffins' in guiding people along the way.

Many thanks again to all.

I'll just echo what the above posters said. Some lovely builds in the gallery, nice to have a few more. Best of British to anyone still working away. My thanks to the hosts and organisers, and all those who took part, commented, viewed, and provided advice.

Having only just made it into the gallery with minutes to spare I'd like to thank the moderators for making this GB happen along everyone who has been so supportive and entertaining throughout it. There's some amazing models been produced and a few more close to completion that I hope will continue to get updates on their relevant threads.

Me :weep: me :poo: me :hanging: . I even woke up earlier this morning to add Clear on my Sea Hurricane so I could start adding decals tonight and finish this in time, as these GB:s usually last til sunday night. Apparently I can´t read or I can´t understand what I´m reading, as it´s been clear to most of us that the build time ended @ thursday, but not to me. Anyhoo, I'll do what Col. asked for above and finish the kit so it won´t bother me anymore! Regards, V-P

Of course I found both time and mojo to finish the Sea Hurricane tonight! While I was at it I also sprayed matt varnish on the MIBGB desert Hurribomber. It improved the looks. I'll take and post pics of both planes in my build thread later. Thanks for the GB! Get your Ju 88:s ready 😉

wish I could have finished my slip wing in time, needs about 1 more week.
