Yugoslav Hurricane - Airfix 1/72 3/10/14 - Decals on

Recommended Posts

Hi Mitch,

PM inbound.

Those decals came out a treat, any chance of a better look at the text on the tail?

Cheers,

Stew

Stew,

Try this:

It's pretty blown up, so it's not great.

I'm on the way with yellow prop tips, plain old early aerial and liking or lumping the kit exhausts :)

Hi Mitch,

Thanks for that, the Kora decals are nicely readable, and the yellow colour looks fine, the picture provides everything I wanted to see. cheers :D

The exhausts are correct and don't need to be changed, they should be the ejector-type for this aircraft :thumbsup2: - sorry if I confused things there, I meant they should not be the 'kidney-type' exhausts from the very early Hurricanes as provided as an option in the series 2 issue of the kit.

She's going to be a cracking model once she's finished B)

Cheers,

Stew

Glad to be of help Stew. Whatever faults Kora decals may have, lack of sharpness and clarity are certainly not among them. If you can magnify it enough, it's readable!

Cheers for the clarification on the exhausts - I thought mine looked right, but was wondering if there was something incredibly subtle that I was managing to not see. I'll get the final gloss coat on today, and get that canopy done!. Given that 2347 saw little combat, weathering will be minimal, but I want the least little bit of pin wash on the upper surfaces, where the pre-shading failed.

The Yugoslav machines certainly make for a different set of colours to the typical Hurricane scheme. Nice work Mitch - every time I see your updates I'm tempted to get the kit but thankfully my LMS hasn't taken any in so that saves the stash growing any larger.

Cheers Col - apart from anything else it is a nice change from all the dark green and dark earth! The kit isn't perfect - dr_gn's thread here covers most of the gory details (or will, I'm sure, as they come up during the build). However, it goes together rather well, and certainly looks like a Hurricane to me. As someone else pointed out, irritating as it is that it has some flaws, you'd have to work just as hard or harder to remediate any other manufacturers' effort! For the price (a VERY serious consideration here in Yorkshire! ), it's a great kit and a useful addition to any stash. Go on, you know you want to!

After along evening, I've managed to mask and hairy stick the canopy, change the aerial, add the bead sight and pin wash the panels, all of which went off OK.

I added brake pipes from wire (needing no painting!) and then put in the undercarriage.

Oh. My. Giddy. Aunt. The gap where part of the U/C goes through the framing in the wheel well had become undersize as a result of pre-painting, which made fitting it a bit leery, but the soft, wobbly plastic of accurate scale thickness is a nightmare. The stuff has all the strength and rigidity of overcooked spaghetti! Once I've got it varnished and photographed, I have grave doubts how long it'll last stood on its wheels before it goes hopelessly bow-legged :(

Nah, trust me Mitch, as long as you have the retraction strut that goes through the framing fixed to the relevant hole in the front wall of the wheelbay it will stiffen up fine erm... latitudinally and the bracing strut that angles back to the slot in the wing from the main gear locks it er... longitudinally :pipe:

It's just one of the things with some of the new Airfix kits, if you fit it right, it is innovative and clever :coolio: , but if you don't it looks like they did something wrong when designing the kit

I dropped my last one onto the tiled kitchen floor while decalling, it landed on its gear and nothing at all broke, so it is strong enough to survive having its picture taken :D

Looking forward to seeing the finished item :)

Cheers,

Stew
