Hi all,

Some of you may have followed a thread previously on the Hurricane my grandfather flew in Burma for 11 RAF squadron. Now that that build is done and dusted i am onto the next of the "planes my grandfather flew" series which is a CAC Wirraway he flew in Deniliquin, NSW, Australia at 7 SFTU. I have got some photos from his own album as well as others from the net i have found of planes i know he flew. Any information you could provide on what colour scheme these planes would most likely have been painted would be great...

Here are the two photos i have from his album...

Here are some others from the net of planes i know he flew (from his logbook)...

Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers

According to Pentland camouflage should be foliage green & earth brown over sky blue.

Cowlings and three digit numbers on fuselage are yellow.

Red/white/blue roundels on fuselage and upper/lower wing surfaces. Red/white/blue fin flashes.

Medium sea grey serials.

Some suggestions for earth brown, foliage green & sky blue:

The net photos that you posted are from an earlier period when aircraft had aluminium dope undersurfaces with the large black ac serials below both wings, no fin flashes and blue/red roundels on wing uppersurfaces.

Shoe,

I agree with Panoz on the likely colours used for both upper and lower surfaces.

Although I have not used them, I believe White Ensign Models do a good (and accurate) range of RAAF WW2 paint colours.

I also believe that Humbrol 149 - Foliage Green and 99 - Chocolate are reasonable substitutes for the upper camouflage and your choice of RLM76 may be a reasonable match for Sky Blue. Humbrol 24 - Trainer Yellow for the cowl and number.

The Blue on those "Type A" roundels are also very light.

Please use this as a guide only. The harsh Australian conditions can be pretty nasty to external paints.

Cheers.. Dave

May i suggest joining Aussiemodeller

the 'boss' is Harvs73 here, and if they might be interested in the photos, and you may well get a better answer. A fair few members there are here too though.

There is some information there on the [minor] detail problems with the Special Hobby Wirraway kit.

Thanks Panoz, That is a great help. When you mentioned Pentland, i googled it and found the book on Wirraway markings and found a copy on ebay in australia.... so thanks that will help a lot!

If you are building a Wirraway then we have an extensive walkaround;

Wow Julien, that walkaround is fantastic! I plan on doing a fairly scale cockpit on the 1:7 scale model so this will help a lot!

Dave, I have used WEM paints before and actually already have the RAAF sky blue. I have ordered a tin each of their foliage green and earth brown. Im actually going to be spraying with thinned down ordinary household latex paint so i will use these tins to do colour patches so dulux can match! Using this kind of paint in the RC scale field is quite popular as it is far more economical than buying 10 tiny tins and the results are really good.
