Airfix 2015 Pt 2

Wez

Recommended Posts

Wez, think you may be on to something with a 72nd Lightning F1/3.

Paul

Well if they aren't releasing one, I will have a market for my stash of F Mk1a and F Mk3's which will appear shortly (and probably my T-55s and T4 & T5 conversions)

I'm concentrating on 1/48 now.

A range of MiG 21's in 1/72 F-13, PF, MF, BIS and U (chuck in a LanceR and Bison too please!)

But do the Beaufighter first.

Trevor

Revell do a very nice F-13 already, the Zvesda PFM is good as well.

A new Beaufighter would surely sell shed loads? Along with a decent mossie.

I think Airfix will leverage the Great War Centennial. In particular, the Dogger Bank engagement.

Meaning a 1/350 HMS Lion, HMS Invincible, SMS Seydlitz, and SMS Derfflinger. Maybe 1/700 scale, but people seem to want bigger these days. Battleships in 2016 for the Jutland centennial.

A 1/48 Spit XIV is one of the most-wanted World War 2 aircraft, it would top my airplane list.

If I thought I could get a 1/32 Sopwith Camel out the door by the end of 2014, I would...but Wingnut Wings is reported to be working on a Camel that will be definitive. The big headache is that WNW is too thorough in their research, too good in their design. Once they release a kit, it's nearly impossible to top it.

Maybe a 1/48 Short 184. Or a Gotha in that scale.

I would, though, look seriously into a 1/350 R-type Zeppelin.

Maybe reduce the Javelin and Sea Vixen to 1/72.

Probably all will appear in due course, but there is no way Airfix will produce them all in the same year.

Stating the obvious . But nobody is expecting to get everything on his wish list. We'd all be happy with one at the most two of our favourites.

I entirely agree, though it’s just possible that Airfix could give us an early Wellington and a late Beaufighter in the same year. Both are well known and widely used by many countries; Xtradecal would go crazy with either!

Alas, however worthy, not really true for the Defiant or Hampden, so I don’t rate the chances of their retooling highly.

And the Halifax? I wouldn’t put it past Italaeri to produce one, and I must wonder if Airfix’s reissue of their own later this year is in anticipation/with foreknowledge of this….

You'll understand if I disagree with you there. I certainly think that at some point they will do the Defiant. As to the Halifax, as we've discussed at length on here, on many occasions, that just because one company does a particular kit does not mean another company will not do the same. If you think about you'll see that "everybody" does a Lancaster, Spitfire, 109, Mustang, etc, etc. The list is endless. Whether Italaeri does a Halifax or not will not deter Airfix if they think they can sell one as well. We both know it would sell.

Unless Revell have re-released their F-13 in the past couple of months, then it is almost impossible to find these days.

Zvezda do a very nice -bis.

The old adage is that another manufacturer won't make Airfix money. The only '21 family was Fujimi, but (1) rare as hen's teeth and (2)

Inaccurate since post Cold War info is now to hand.

True enough! Also, remember that Airfix did a Mig-21F way waaaaay back in the day, so it certainly fits in with their current business model.

OK, predictions (as opposed to likes):

1/72nd

Wildcat / Martlet (already been suggested, I know)

BP Defiant (agree with the rest of you, although I have zero interest in this . . .)

Beaufighter (yep, I'd like one, but I actually believe it's on the cards - and for '15)

Buccaneer or Jag (to go with their Lightnings)

1/48th

Hunter (also been mentioned, but it's that '50s vibe they've got going)

1/24th

Not sure they'll do another in 2015.

Since the Defiant is about the only notable fighter from the Battle of Britain which hasn't been newly done or retooled by Airfix (I appreciate that the Blenheim fighter variants haven't appeared yet), then I'd have thought that the 75th anniversary of the Battle would be a rather good time for it to come out.

Also, since Airfix have been prepared to take a punt on the not-that-well-regarded Swift (BM, passim), and given that the Hunter F4 entered service in 1955, perhaps a small bore Hunter....? (112 Squadron & 34 Squadron markings, please, if in 72nd)

And not doing the Spitfire XIV in 48th would seem, to me, a little perverse given that even allowing for the 'I'll buy ten! Er... actually, I meant one.... in about six months' factor that appears to accompany some kits - thus burning manufacturers' fingers - possibly kicking in. I'm afraid (no, actually my wallet is) that I would buy ten.

My slightly-off-the-wall-but-not suggestion would be a BE2c/Fokker Eindekker double for the centenary of the Fokker Scourge.

Shouldn't this have been re-named the "Airfix 1/72 Beaufighter thread 2015"?

Anyway they are all well and good but I'm predicting the following.

Which are much more needed as no decent tool exists of these in injected plastic, all in 1/72.

McDonnell Douglas F101 Voodoo in both A - C and RF

Republic F-84F Thunderstreak

Republic RF-84F Thunderflash

Blackburn Buccaneer

Gloster Javelin

Avro Shackleton

Avro Lincoln

Avro York

Boeing 314 Clipper

Handley Page Hastings

I suppose I'll have to say it even if I would still prefer a new tool British Phantom and Buccaneer in 1/72nd but Airfix really do need to do new tools of the Tornado and the Typhoon as they really can't do justice to the new generation of modellers but doing excellent tooling's of older out of service aircraft and yet have the two actual frontline aircraft of the RAF represented by very dated average tooling's based on the prototypes. Yes I know Revell do both as do Hasegawa, but they don't earn money for Airfix and it should be really addressed sooner rather than later.

(I can't see them doing the F-35B Lightning until the RAF get the first production aircraft and they can confirm the marking schemes to be used)

1/72 Tornado GR4

1/72 Typhoon FGR4

Looking through the past few new ones from Airfix, there seems to be a trend towards early WW2 subjects so subjects like the Defiant, Battle, metal wing Mk.1 Hurri etc would seem to be possible candidates for 2015.

Someone on here's motioned that Airfix were laser measuring suitable candidates for inclusion in their catalogue. That being so what is out there at the moment in bits being restored?

The Defiant is being seen to by MAPS and the Wellington is in Cardington being restored........
