nick
I found a load of boxes in the garage full of weird shaped bits of plastic, and had some vague recollection of doing something with glue with them?So for possibly the first time ever (well since about 7 anyway) Here's an out of the box build! It's the venerable trumpy 1/32 SBD 1/2 Dauntless that I picked up from Muddle zone (remember them?) for about 30 quid if memory serves. It's one of the few (possibly only, Dan) kit's I own with no after market. So after my long lay-off modelling, I thought I would have a crack at it to see if I can remember what to do.Firstly, what a really nice kit, very, very impressed. As I'm just enjoying myself with this I didn't bother taking any photos until now. Had a go at the cockpit anyway:-Thanks for looking,Nick
georgeusa
For your reentry into modeling, it looks like you remember how to do it quite well. Look forward to further updates on this build.

nick
No stopping me now. This is all in the box, there is no aftermarket of any kind here, drilled out a few things and some careful painting, but that's it. Still can't quite believe how nicely this builds without adding my usual hundred quids worth of stuff. I'm thinking of going for an early BMF scheme - except - were they really bare metal or painted silver? I'm sure one of you guys knows the answer. I suspect they were painted, in which case I won't bother. A bit more shading and scuffing in the cockpit Thanks for looking, Nick

Jessica
IIRC, the yellow wings aircraft didn't have interior green paint; they had clear lacquer finish inside. It was only with the camouflage that they got the interior green paint as well, and that was only on newly-built aircraft. Repainted aircraft kept their silver interiors
nick
It's going to be a damn shame to button this one up, this is some of the best interior detail I've seen in any kit. It's seems very comprehensive and appears accurate, although I have limited reference material for the aircraft. Really enjoying the build anyway which was the idea. Been playing around with off-camera flash and multiple light sources if some of these photos look a little different. Thanks again for all the support. Paint it is then. a BMF lacquered cockpit would have looked ace on this as well if I'd done my homework first. That's life as the French say. Thanks for the info. nick
Just about ready to button her up, finished the side panels, seat belts and a little additional wiring, T-levers, etc (still counts as out of the box!) Very little of this will be seen after today. Thanks for looking. Nick
nick
I really do like the look of models in Mr. Surfacer, I think there is a whole website somewhere dedicated to it. Cracking on anyway. I learnt the BMF wasn't anyway now. It was silver paint, not bare metal. so looks like a boring mono-colour scheme then Nick
The Crusty one
fantastic work Nick ....like you say a pity a lot of the interior wont be seen....but we all know its there and we have the pictures to prove it!:-)

nick
Well I didn't fancy this scheme, but now the paint is on I must say I really like it. For some reason it reminds of the old 1961 Corvette Mako Shark scheme. The pre shading has worked pretty well, even though you can't see it in these images. I didn't photograph it, we've all seen black stripes before Used bare metal foil chrome pushed into the landing lamp with a q-tip to make the reflector here. Committed a modelling crime by not bothering to build the induction system/oil tanks that will never been seen behind the engine. Shock horror, I would never dream of such a thing normally, but it was both quite liberating and naughty at the same time. Course, I could have left the cowlings clear as supplied in the kit - err don't think so, I have never seen anyone make this look good, it might be OK in principle, and great if you're 7, but you can't really pull it off with a proper model IMHO. pinky coffeeboat
What's great about your build is that not only are you producing an absolutely cracking model but you actually sound as if you're having a lot of fun doing so. Too many times we agonise over getting the exact shade for things like the rudder pedals and other bits never to be seen again and then lose interest and another half built model goes back into the stash. Great stuff! Jeff

Great stuff! Jeff Yup, I've got more half-built models than most. A year off certainly lends perspective. 99% of us never show these models so who are we trying to kid? This looks like it might be right, an unkindness (proper collective noun as just defined by me) of nerds can sweat the intracies of was it blue or green in a 70 year old black and white photo until the cows come home, but in the grand scheme of things, if we can fashion something that suspends disbelief long enough to look realistic, IMHO that's what it's all about.Climbs off soap box... nick
Lots and lots and lots of shading and panel lines. Happy with it though. Decals are a bit thick, so might make some stencils yet. Thanks for looking Nick
