Hawker Typhoon - bombs or rockets

As I understand it, Typhoon squadrons were either equipped to drop bombs or fire rockets as it took a considerable time to change between roles. Does anybody have, or know of a list as to which squadrons were equipped for what?

I've tried Google but it's a mass of conflicting information.

Thanks in advance.

I've never seen such a list, but it may be obtainable from a study of the Shores/Thomas books on 2TAF. I have seen a statement, from a Canadian modeller, that the Canadian units only used bombs. You would need to be careful as although a rapid change of role was found to be unworkable, that doesn't mean that squadrons necessarily maintained the same role thoughout the campaign.

Part of the reason was not only the time taken, but the pilot training and familiarisation.

I think you'll find the best answer in Chris Thomas' "Typhoon units of the 2nd TAF" published by Osprey.

If I'm correct, there were squadrons that specialised in either rockets or bombs, however as Graham has indicated above there were exceptions.

I'd recommend that you go and buy yourself a copy. To me, it's probably one if the best in the series and has plenty of unit and colour information that modellers find fascinating.

Watch out however - as you'll probably get grand plans to build a kit of each of the 20 squadrons mentioned!!

Cheers.. Dave
