perdu
Nice of you John but... This has been uncrafty as heck lately When I came to put my home brewed decals on the tail they were awfully disappointing What was black on the decal sheet left the backing paper grey, not the impression I was after Awful photo, but you can just make out the greyness, poor print property selection so I had another go before giving up and accepting the old Almarks sheet sizes as gospel. Their 6" serials don't fit the ribs on the tail, which it seems they should on the real thing Now for the later offering I turned the contrast to maximum, full on darkness and slid the colour sliders about until the visual indicator window went almost black Now the lettering has printed full-on black, phew The actual fit between the ribs is better even though it isn't quite the fit on the helicopter for real There's an access panel on the tail spine which looks as if it provides service access for the tail shaft bearing a couple of layers of Tamiya tape for that, if anyone thinks it's too visible I can whip one layer off (Steve?) I redid the tail rotor warning decal in Photoshop and printed it on white decal sheet Trim to suit and white outline as required I think I can move on now, overall coat of matt varnish and see what the windows look like Then on with the engine and let the detailing begin, I've alread started by removing the traces of visible red from the earlier tail rotor DANGER signs in case you wondered . .

perdu
Thanks chaps, er, did anyone see where I left that roof mould? One is feeling mighty displeased with oneself And the roof Here's a set of reasons why The fit is awful It just doesnt sit right anywhere much I could live with this side (port) but overall I consider it "FAIL"... The side windows are pretty bad too,,I might redo these if Clear'ing them doesn't do any good I dont expect it to .Mind you I quite like the overall look of it, not too far away from "right" IMO But I'm not too happy with the roof sight either, gives me a second chance with that too I hope I can do these better this time back to the grinderstoneythingmy .
hendie
sometimes our harshest critics are ourselves. It looks fine to me but I admit to not knowing the scout at all. To me it looks like you've done a grand job
worm
Hi Bill, the Canopy roof isn't the easiest shape to replicate on a Scout, may I suggest a bit more of a radius on the tinted section at the front which should stop that raised eyebrow look if you are going to redo it, the rest looks great. Many thanks for your build thread and your perseverance, my hat off to you Sir. All the best Steve ps, re the sight, maybe a little smaller in diameter. perdu
I've been trepidatory for a few days about the roof Lesson learnt AGAIN!!! if you dont think it's right do summat about it The rear right corner has been a worry, as have the front screen tops. Remember I did some alterations before? Obviously there was some more distance to go worm thanks for more nice pictures, is that one personal I wonder? I intend making a slimmer sight, it has been on my niggle list I reckon part of the roof panel trouble is down to using PETg which I am just not used to, enough Acetate thins out a little when you mould from it PETg seems to say, "sod you matey I'm, staying thick and hard" so I am going to mould from acetate sheet next time, I got six A4 sheets for £6 at the local Artists suppliers The curves around the upper screen and the roof panels along the door tops needs to be more subtle as does that back window join too Having said that I have to say I AM pleased with the rest of it, it has been a fantastic learning curve with the printing, I'm even quite happy with the door badges ISH! I am making a decent job with the wheels I think, show you in a day or so, unless I can get the wife to come away for a few days She needs a break soon Anyway thanks for your kind comments, this pressurised build makes for constant improvement and that can only happen if you help out with your own impressions I dont take helpful comment personally laters guys
Fozzy
Hi Bill... I agree with Steve in reference to the canopy roof...not easy to replicate....but if you are going to redo it ...everything Steve says and maybe darken the blue....unless you had a flash on your camera!! Shaping up really well.....bloody good job....
worm
These two shots are off the net and as you can see the rear section starts to curve up from the rear door frame and then has another curve that joins the rear center panel, a bit of a lazy "S" shape. ps, I think the tint is a more dark brown to black, bit like a 35mm film negative. perdu
Yes already condemned the blue Fozzy, maybe one coat blue then one coat thinned black experiment time ahead
perdu
OKay what do we think chaps Third pull of acetate direct pull moulding, no time to try vaccing this tonight and wanted to get something done Trimmed close, tinted with a felt tip in the old traditional way, maybe a blue spray later but I'm not convinced it needs it port side not glued down yet of course there's lots to do inside and I seem to recall a compassy thing for the forward frame As you see it is only popped in for a looksee, here's that bit at the back that was really dire first time around And profiles tell me a lot, this one looks right to my eyes Got to decide whether the windows get IT too, front one might be a tad awkward But... As they are they looks 'orrid .
Fritag
I've been trepidatory for a few days about the roof Lesson learnt AGAIN!!! if you dont think it's right do summat about it You kid yourself for a while that it'll be all right, maybe you think you're being too anal about it and that you'll get used to it.....and then it isn't - and you don't. And by then it's more of a pain to fix cos of what you've done in the meantime - but it just has to be done........Hey ho. Glad I'm not like that Makes for a cracking read tho' Bill She's a little masterpiece Bill (are helicopters female?) and deserves a canopy that you're happy with. MolarDoc
Your inability to compromise will make this build a very satisfying masterpiece if micro-modelling. Hats off to you!
perdu
Inability to compromise? now look what you made me do I have made the new, new roof/screen section and I am quite happy with it but nowhere near happy with the front and side windows Much more like Win3.1 than 7 8 or XP which powers my pooter Blurry and 'orrid They have to go not least because if you look at the great photos that worm (Steve) has posted the front ones are bulged out side the fuselage line This means they need to be moulded just to put a bulge in the 'perspex' ® window I use a technique I call hot thumb moulding although other digits are available Take a thick sheet of plasticard (0.060", is what I used) and cut out the shape of the aperture to be moulded I am making two shapes so there's two holes in the plastic As the technique requires a finger/thumb to press hot plastic into the space left by the 'hole' I found it advisable to cushion the skin from the BHP (B***** hot plastic) so I use a soft cloth normally used to wipe the sweat off my reading/modelling glassses Seen here are two shaped holes and the melted plastic and the soft cloth I use for cushioning things along Not difficult to see which windows will get the next 'press moulding' treatment I made two so there be a part and a spare You can see the initial roof structure going into the roof and the carved piece of clothes peg that I tried to use for a cooler mould Didnt quite work out this time .You can see the 'heir and spare' parts ready to be cut out Nice pinky red reflection shown here, I thought I had left some junk in the roof at first dohhh The roof sight has been in my list too, the original was awesomely over scale so here is the newbie Some of the framing structure here too, that made it easier to nail the tubes in place that hold and direct the sight The new clearer front window in place (for a while, I put another better one in later) And of course small compassy thing along with the full amout of framing this very visible item needs . Here is the new nose look with curvy windows m very XP not Win 7 OK OK they do look quite good in real time Here's the blown-look window ready to trim, if you get really close you can see the weave imposed on the plastic by living ithumb I'm not sure but I suspect there will be a pair of new medium sized door windows too, (they look lousy to me) tomorrow night . general melchett
Great stuff Bill...the way you're headed you're going to end up replacing just about everything you've made !....I know the feeling...one in the wash and one to wear..
keefr22
Bill, I admire your (& Steve F, Mark CT, the General et al) perfectionism & the desire to get everything 'just so' - excellent work all round. But, you know what, I don't think I'll ever even take my poor Airfix Scout out of it's box again...!! Keith
