Airfix 1:76 Sherman Crab ++++ Completed ++++

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Second entry for this GB.

Another venerable armour kit but updated with another sprue to produce the mine clearing "Crab" Variant.

Apparently it's the wrong type of Sherman but such things don't really bother me - It'll be an OOB Build at my desk at lunchtimes....

Pictures to follow.

Box and contents - Sometimes it's useful having a Hobbycraft 5 mins from the office.

After the first lunchtime sesh....

After the following session. I'm sure they only took an hour to build when I was nine.

Constituent parts....

The flail arm thingies - Quite tricky to get everything aligned, the two white prongs were added as the backs of the booms would be glued on a knife edge otherwise.

And the sum of the parts. If the wife had some spare broken necklace then I suppose I could make the flails sit at rest but it'll have to look like it's in operation instead

I got some chain at a hobby store near where I work. It was about GBP3 for 1foot lengths of links at 40 per inch or 27 per inch. I got two of the 40pi and one of the 27pi to see how they look. I think I'll get another of the 40pi and use that. The 'hair roller" look doesn't work, does it?!

It's certainly tempting. There's a Hobbycraft just down the road from work so i might pop there one lunchtime.

Crab now primed - I assume that it would be SCC15?

Crab now painted - Equal amounts of Vallejo olive grey and russian uniform was the suggested mix for SCC15.

Picked up a chain from Hobbycraft but it might not be fine enough. Balls on the ends of the flails? Need something small and spherical, mustard seeds should do the job.

Getting there now,

Varnished, tyres painted, decals added, oil dots (but not too much as I'm assuming these vehicles were fairly new prior to D-day)

If you look closely, at the 6 o'clock position on the flail, there is a length of chain attached.

I've only done the one as I think it might be a bit too overscale...

Couldn't put up with the chain I'd put on before, wire was far too thick....

So there I was, like a fish out of water (being 48 and a bloke), in Claires Accessories looking for a finer chain.

I got lucky, even more so when the chain broke at the till, the assistant asks me if I'd like a replacement?

"No, that's ok, I'm not planning on wearing it, but as it's broken could you bring the price down?"

Result!

Anyway, here's how it's looking now...
