Cargolux grey?

Recommended Posts

So the other day a shiny new 748F followed me home and now I have to dress it up. Since Revell don't send their paints over the ocean, can anyone suggest a good match for Cargolux light grey in Humbrol or Model Master? (those being the paints I have on-hand).

The "problem" with using Revell 371 is that's it's perhaps a bit too light. From looking at pictures of the aircraft, it would seem that, to my eyes, the grey is a bit brownish/yellow in the same way that light gull grey (USN fame) has that tinge.

So maybe as a start, try light gull grey. In fact looking at my tin of Humbrol 129 the lid at least has a similar shade of grey that *could* be used for Cargolux grey; or try 196 as suggested above, again my tin looks quite a close match.

I'd be interested to learn of a recommended grey from a readily available paint range too. I've got my 747-8 build lined up next and it could be Cargolux or Cathay Pacific Cargo (now that's going to raise lots of questions about correct greys)

This is the same issue I'm about to have as I'm making at the moment. As it says light grey all the images I've looked at on line look as thought the aircraft is a satin white. Needless to say im royaly confused!

Not that I've ever seen. The popular paint brands here in North America are Testors, Tamiya, Vallejo and Humbrol (more in Canada than the States). Pactra, Flowquil and Poly S used to be huge in the US, but they were bought out by Testors and discontinued.

Are all their aircraft grey? I was looking through airliners.net and some look almost white

but others are obviously grey and this one seems to have a white nose!

This one is most definately grey

It all depends on the light I suppose, I do have half a can of Halfords polar grey, but not sure if that would be too dark. It seems a good match for Aeroflot grey. Like Jess I'm stuck in the 'colonies' and can't get humbrol or Revell paints.

You can get Revell enamel paints from 1001modelkits. They seem to have the full range and reasonable shipping too - under $6 for a few tins. Also I have recently found a model store in the Netherlands which sells Hannants Xtracolor and Revell - they ship to the USA for 19 euros shipping (up to 10 tins). PM me if you want the links.

My LHS here in Milwaukee carries Humbrol, and Sprue Brothers has Humbrol as well.

Where in Milwaukee? I'm in the north Chicago suburbs, but my wife's favorite restaurant (Honey Pie) is in Milwaukee and so I sometimes find myself up there.

It's Greenfield News and Hobby at 6815 W Layton Ave. Here are some directions from Honey Pie (assuming there's only one, and it's on S Kinnickinnic):
