Homerbronco
That is just beautiful [right word to use for a muscle car? hmmm] love the way you have shown it as "raced" rather than pristine. The underdash wiring and the tyre stones are my favourite elements, bravo.
larchiefeng
Codger, This a great looking GT-40 and I especially like the "just raced look" I had looked at this car a while back and had it saved in my favorites. I was going through them today doing a little house cleaning on my computer and decided to look at it again; I didn't realize that you had built it. I think on of my next builds I'm going to do a little weathering too. I also have this Trumpeter GT-40 and the KA full detail kit to go with it but, I've heard so much negative on this kit I haven't decided to build it yet. On the just raced look; I have this Tamiya Paul Newman, Dick Barbour, Rolf Stommelen Hawaiian Tropic 935 that I haven't posted anywhere but, I think it might be a good candidate for a just raced look. Did you do a WIP build log on the GT-40 or just here for inspection? I should also add that, this is another one of my reclamation projects that I bought to rebuild. Here is my 935 in it's current state. And here it sits as a constant reminder to finish it while waiting for me to return from the great Pocher Wars of 2015. I had thought about doing a thread on this car as I have all the pictures from when I started it but, I just don't know when I would get back to it Wayne
Codger
Well thank you Wayne for digging out my old build. No WIP here to show you because I built it before I was a member here. If you want advice or have questions feel free to contact me or ask. To start with, the big need is to lower the ride height and scratch the highly visible rear suspension bits. There are plenty of GT MK II reference bits around. The kit does have shortcomings but nothing to stop it from becoming a knockout. Its shapes and proportions are dead on and that's most important. The knock I do have is on the KA parts. I didn't buy it because a skilled builder like yourself can easily build visible detail without spending KA $$. Their exhaust is no better than the kit parts and the seat grommets are too big. You can make as-good dash toggles. Weathering the 935 will be fun. Here's mine:
larchiefeng
Your 935 certainly looks like it's been through the mill on the race track with plenty of rock chips on the paint of the front air dam. I've been reading a book by Mig Jimenez on weathering called FAQ 2 and the new encyclopedia of weathering volume 1 on cockpits which are directed mainly toward armor and planes but a lot can be applied to engines and undercarriage weathering on cars too. It's all about technique and products being used. I don't know about getting into the GT-40 just yet as I still have the Mercs to build. I might jump over to the 935 for a change of pace but, I want to finish at least one of the Pocher Mercs before moving on. I'm trying to acquire a K82 Roadster on eBay today and if I get it I'm going to use the Cabriolet frame and convert the K82 engine to a 540K engine and then take a page out of your playbook and attempt a body conversion to the 540K Special Roadster by lengthing the hood and shortening the doors and following the plan laid out by Dave and Marvin in their advanced techniques book on the Pocher Mercedes. That ought to be good for at least the next few months. I guess we'll see if I get the roadster to modify. I think I'm actually starting a used 1936 Mercedes dealership here. roymattblack
Lets just jump in here.... The Trumpeter GT40 may have its faults, but overall, it's flippin' brilliant. If you want complete INaccuracy, - here's mine. I've always loved the GULF scheme (look at my avatar...) so here's my SAD version of the kit... I built this some years ago - before I was overcome with adding details. Edited June 3, 2015 by roymattblack
Codger
How can you call that 'SAD'???????????????
larchiefeng
I've always been a big fan of the Gulf cars ever since the movie LeMans with Steve McQueen. Remember a while back on my Mercedes thread I posted a photo of my 917 in progress with the Gulf color scheme. I'm with Codger there's nothing wrong with this. Both of you guys make me me want to just sell everything and take up needlepoint
vontrips
So many good builds in one thread! Wayne, I'd love to see that 935 finished (and a WIP!). I have this kit half done somewhere in the loft! Codger and Roy have shown just how good the GT40 can look without all that aftermarket stuff. Codger you made a great job of the tyres. Have I seen your build before? I remember being put off by the tyres and seeing that you got round the issues by radius wear on the treads? Oh, and one for Roy, who's Gulf version looks superb! Photographed this at Le Mans a few years back and it always makes me chuckle! Talking off which, is anyone here going this year? I'm heading off there again next week! Johnny PS. I also have the bin for those projects that go wrong! Edited June 4, 2015 by vontrips
keefr22
You have to love that bin...!! Great to see your GT40 again Codger, still one of my all time favourite car models, a real thing of beauty! keith
Codger
You're too kind gents, thanks. Love to hear from endurance race fans. Taffy, you have very impressive garage decorations there. I envy your coming trip to la Sarthe. Post some photos for we stay-at-home racers..... And yes, I mercilessly attacked the tires with my sanding belt to get the look of about 70 laps worth of wear - meaning about shot... heloman1
Congratulations Codger, great build. Has to be my favorite car of the '60's, when John Wyre stuck it to Ferrari. Saw my first one in a car showroom in Deansgate Manchester. Test drives were carried out at Outlon Park... Thanks to the other guys for posting thier buld pics too. larchiefeng
Johnny, as I told Codger I still have my two Pocher Mercedes builds going simultaneously elsewhere in the WIP section. I was interested in his GT-40 because I have this kit in my stash and have had misgivings about starting it considering the negatives I've heard about the kit. And, I was only showing Codger the 935 as an example of which car I thought would look good in the just raced weathering he had done on the GT-40. I would hate to start a WIP thread on the 935 and not be able to do many updates however, I did take a lot of pictures of it as I was building it and I suppose it would be good for a while I just don't know when it would actually get finished. I'm not trying to hijack this thread I just wanted to answer you. Wayne

Codger
I stumbled across this link in my saved bookmarks and realized this 5 year-old thread had all the pix wiped out by the hated Photobucket ransom demand. Hoping there's some value for old GT-40 fans, I've rounded up some of the shots from the build. Doubt if they're the original ones from the thread but here's a few to show the idea. Â Sad there's some names that responded to the build who are no longer posting here. A great group of guys. And how it looks today: Â Â 14

Coventrycat
Wow, that looks fantastic - love the color, and it just looks soooo right in the display case. One of my favorite cars of all time.
Codger
A big thank you to Mr 'Coors 54' for having the patience to dig this one out of mothballs from nearly one year ago - and awarding a 'Like'. The old warrior has been safely under glass so immune from The Virus. But now has a Caterham 7 room mate in slightly cramped conditions. But they live to race another day....
