PlaStix
Hi Steve, Arnold, giemme and ruudster. Thank you for your comments. I have to say I'm surprised that painting with a brush can turn out looking like it does but it's only because of the advice from fellow brush painters on BM! I've got some more painting and minor construction done today and given the desert yellow areas a wash of thinned dark grey. My thinking is that I need to get it to be of a similar appearance to the lower hull and wheels before I add the camouflage to the upper areas. I also started work on the spare tracks, weapons and other places that have a more metallic finish. The tracks still need a lot more work to make them look worn and dirty. I'm using these as practice before attempting the actual tracks. I've also started painting the stuff Sgt. Squarehead kindly sent me including spare wheels and a replacement for the half a spade provided by Dragon. Thank you Sarge. Next up I'm going to do some lighter dry-brushing over the desert yellow area. Kind regards, Stix
Arniec
Are you sure it's in 1/72 scale?! If you would have said it was in 1/35 I would have believed you. That is a excellent model. Hmmm maybee I am going over to the dark side(1/72). lol. Cheers,
PlaStix
Hi Arnold - you are right - it is a very well detailed kit for 1/72 and it's fun to build. Only a small update this evening. Light dry-brushing has been applied to all desert yellow areas. In the second photo I thought I'd just lodge the side panels in place. I've also painted up the spare rear section and tried some camo colours on it. It doesn't look great..... Still not really sure what to do about the camouflage pattern yet but it's getting close to being the only thing I can do on it. I may have a go at the new resin replacement exhausts for my Eduard Spitfire first thing tomorrow. Comments and suggestions welcome. PlaStix
This morning I ended up doing some more work on this project while waiting for the new resin exhausts, for my Eduard Spitfire build, to dry. I'm still putting off doing anything about the camo painting until I find some decent images. So I got some more parts glued in place on the front edge of the hull and on the turret: I also attached the engine exhausts: Attached the ends to the wire cables: Gave the tools an anthracite wash and painted the edges of the spare wheels: And got the initial painting done on the tracks: I've still got a bit more to do before I need to do the camo but hopefully I'll come across some images I can use soon. Comments and suggestions welcome. Kind regards, Stix
Kallisti
Very nice - not a fan of German armour, too bloody much of it about IMO, but your painting of this is exemplary!
PlaStix
Hi Kallisti - thank you. Yeah I know what you mean - it wouldn't have been my choice of first tank to build (for many years) except I needed something for the Typhoon to be firing it's rockets at!! Having said that I am enjoying building it because it's such a nice kit.
PlaStix
Final brief update for the weekend - U-bolts fitted front and rear plus the unit between the engine exhausts: General side view of progress so far: Bit more work done on the tracks - dark earth wash added: Once the tracks are fully weathered and fitted I can attach the side panels and then I've got to do the camouflage. I might have made a decision as to which I'm going to do but I'll do some more research before I finally start. Kind regards, Stix
fatfingers
Aye up Stix. That's looking the dogs mate. Not too shabby for a non tanky modeller! You need to have a go at a 35th scale Look forward to more. Regards, Steve
woody37
You're not kidding about the detail in a 1/72 kit, but it's the way you're handling it that's making it rather special

PlaStix
Hi Steve, Woody, Wolwe and giemme - thanks for the comments. It's a lovely kit to work with and the only slightly tricky bit was actually this morning fitting the tracks - but they're on as are the side panels. Next time I get chance to work on this I'm going to attempt the camouflage. Kind regards, Stix
Stew Dapple
Hi Stix, Looking really nice; I would suggest going very thin with the camo colours and build them up gently so a bit of the sand-yellow still shows through afterwards, I think too bright and dense a green and/or brown on top of that would ruin the effect - feel free to ignore me as I really don't know what I am talking about but that is what feels like the right idea to me Cheers, Stew
sean
Really enjoying seeing this come together Stix, your'e doing a great job with the tank. Enjoying it so much I actually went and bought myself a tank ,( it was only 3 quid in TK MAXX) Regards, Sean
Mottlemaster
Good to see a wingything builder doing a tank .The question is are you going to do it tracks up and in flight comming out of the Sun ?
PlaStix
Hi Stew - thank you for your comments - I think that definitely sounds like a plan. I've done a bit more practicing using your idea of the thinned paint and I think it might work okay. Now just got to pluck up courage and put brush to Zimmerit! Hi Sean - great stuff! Can I ask which tank you managed to get and are you going to do a WIP? I checked in a TK Maxx today but no sign of any kits :-( Good to see a wingything builder doing a tank .The question is are you going to do it tracks up and in flight comming out of the Sun ?Yes I think so!! I had thought about doing it tracks down and with the hatch open but then I thought - would this mark have the crowbar on the inside of the door?..... And should it be red? Too many unanswered questions and the research seems inconclusive - so in flight it is! ;-)Kind regards, Stix Edited August 15, 2014 by PlaStix
PlaStix
Finally got on and did the camouflage. It was as I thought in that it's difficult to reproduce some of the images I'd found and as I was working on it I wasn't happy at all. But now it's had an Anthracite wash over everything and some dry-brushing, to tone it down a little, it's not too bad. I'm sure the tank experts won't be impressed but it's my first go at German camo. I followed the suggestions from Sarge, Brews and Stew with regards the painting in that I used very thinned paint brushed on then mottled and dry-brushed. Next up I'm going to attach all the equipment and then try to do some specific weathering - yet another new challenge! Comments and suggestions welcome. PlaStix
Good afternoon. I've got some more done - I've added all the detailing parts now apart from the turret mounted machine gun. I'm going to to leave the latter off - it looks fairly delicate - until I've finished weathering, which I've not started yet. Anyway I decided it was at a stage where a range of photos might be in order: Next I need to weather this - not too sure how to go about this yet, but I'm going to hunt through the armour section on BM for some tips! Then, next up for this project, will be the diorama base! Kind regards, Stix
Sgt.Squarehead
That is very possibly the best brush painted German camo I have ever seen, your colour choices are perfect and the way you have applied them is just stunning.....Outstanding finish!
rwoolven76
Stix, my friend, when it comes to brush painting, you da man! Good to see another one in the eye for the airbrushers in our midst. Hairy stick all the way. ;-) Richard

Sgt.Squarehead
Stick to 1/72.....We need more Braillers on here and you have a real talent for it.....Seriously!
sean
Wow Stix, that's some finish, well done that man. I do believe some would be hard pressed to get a finish like that with an airbrush. Overall, this has turned out to be an excellent model, it's a shame it's going to get blown up!! As for the tank I got in TKMAXX, it's Revell's Leopard 1A5, in 1/72 scale, I've had a quick look in the box and it looks quite nice. As for a wip, I doubt it, I can hardly keep a wip going for my GB builds Sean
