Immediately after completing the rather gorgeous Airfix Lightning, I dug out another offering fromEnglish Electric. Having been released a few years back, I had great expectations from this kit, especially given Airfix's current standards, and the fact I last built a Canberra about 20 years ago (Matchbox). However, this took some work. The panel lines were quite up there with Matchbox (I'm sure I heard whistles and cries of "over the top") and I filled most of them to tone it down a tad. The fit was generally good with the odd bit of filler here and there. I blended the windscreen in a bit more though, and replaced the nose probe with some fuse wire. The small windows were filled with Glue n Glaze, the aerial was monofilament and I gave the thing a coat of Xtracolor High Speed Silver. Weathering was small, just some scuff marks, staining etc. the decals were ok but blimey they were thick!!i should have used an aftermarket set for the same airframe but three weeks in I just wanted the thing finished! Next time I'll just camouflage the damn thing, be a lot easier :)

It occurred to me after I'd finished it that I'd built two English Electrics concurrently... So here they are :)

And at the time of posting, I'm currently on a third, the Sword Lightning T.4!

That Canberra does look nice, as does your Lightning. I have the Revell, nee Matchbox PR 9 lurking near the top of the "to do" pile: it's even more basic than the Airfix kit and, IIRC, the original issue also had markings for XH168 in 58 Squadron markings. Thanks for the inspiration to get on with it.

Yes I made the original Matchbox one a long time ago. And I think you're right it did have 168 markings, which I think I may still have lurking in a spare decals case somewhere... I know I built that one as a camo machine though. I know somewhere in the stash I have a Frog one and a Novo rebox, plus the Airfix B-57, but I'm wondering now if I had another Matchbox one also?? Hmmm I shall resist the urge to dig them out though, for now :) so many kits..so little time!

Thanks guys :)

Stunning pair alongside each other....and your paints, are you on discount terms with the suppliers.... :)

When I was made redundant from a previous job, I decided to invest some of the pay off money in getting all the paints I would want or need, hence I got all the (then) current Humbrol range, and ditto with the Xtracolors. The boxes they came in were quite impressive, but I dare say there'll be colours I may never use..however, the OCD side of me would be fidgeting if I knew I had a few missing!

  • 4 weeks later...

These are both in my stash and should be "in progress" soon. They look good in silver...which makes my job a lot easier. Now if I can just figure out how to get the Canberra to go together.
