Hasegawa He-111P-2 "Neville Chamberlain"

Recommended Posts

Gentlemen and Ladies. May I present you with my take on Hasegawa's Heinkel He-111P2 from KG55.

She's OOB with a few very small scratch built bits in the cockpit and on the outside. The paints are a halfords rattle can primer, citadel nuln oil wash for the preshading, Vallejo model color for the camouflage and citadel satin for the top coat.

Everything apart from the primer and varnish was applied with a hairy stick and this was my first attempt at preshading with a brush, inspired by my friend Stix.

The build has been fun most of the time, although I had some real issues with the under carriage and I'm really annoyed that I missed the internal framing on the canopy before I closed it up.

There's a WIP thread here:

http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234956005-hasegawa-he-111p-172-finished/

You'll notice that the tail has been slightly doctored. The kit provides swastikas but, as I explain in the WIP my girlfriend's grandmother was an Austrian Jew whose entire family were murdered by the Nazis during the war and at her request I don't display swastikas in our home.

So, without further ado, here she is. I'm generally pleased with how she came out bit as always, criticism and suggestions are actively encouraged.

Damn you photobucket!

Thanks guys. It's been something of a labour of love it has to be said.

Stix, thanks to you I'm never letting anyone ever tell me again that an airbrush is required for a decent finish on a model. In my mind it's just cheating. ;-)

Thanks gents.

All of your comments are apreciated, especially since my beloved other half insists that modelling is not creative but just following someone's instructions. It's a good job she's the love of my life is all I can say

If I could do it again there are a few things I would change. Firstly I missed the internal framing in the cockpit until it was too late to rectify, and secondly I wouldn't have let patience get the better of me while I was unmasking. Next model I will be very careful with the scalpel to make sure the frame lines are nice and crisp, rather than ripping the tape off like a kid on Christmas morning. Still, we live and learn and she's definitely my best result so far. Here's a photo of my second build about a year ago, and the only other german bomber I've built, for comparison. Gives an idea of how far I've come, although the Airfix Ju88 is partly to blame IMO :

Cracking job, looks superb! Have a go at the Airfix Mustang great little kit for little money.

Yes the Mustang would be good - it would be interesting to see the paint finish. What paints do you have in mind?

On the other hand I'd be interested to see you tackle a Spitfire so perhaps the Mk5 and the 109?

Lovely job, very hard to believe it's brush painted. I doubt I could get a better finish with my airbrush.

I'd like to see you have a go at the Finemolds 410, maybe it'd be inspiration for me to get mine back on track?
