Kopro 1/48 Su-22 Fitter

On with the next project, new baby on the way arriving August and going lose my modeling room as a result so trying to cram in as much at the moment while I can! This is Kopro's Su-22 M4R Fitter in 1/48 scale plus a few extras, Aires cockpit, Quickboost Air Scoops, Eduard etch set, Part etch set and decals from Authentic Decals. I got a hold of the Topshots publication which also comes with a small decal sheet for a couple of polish aircraft. It will be finished in Polish markings but not sure which aircraft yet.

modelmaker decals from poland promised new polish decals fir their Su-22s forthis spring! maybe they will be released in time you need them!

Thanks for looking folks, first pics will be up tomorrow night. I'm pleasantly surprised with this kit, the surface detail is pretty good and there's not really any complex shapes so fit shouldn't really be an issue. I've test fitted the Aires cockpit and even that looks like it will need very little prep for a good fit! I think there might be an issue with panel lines not matching up on the fuselage halfs but we'll see.

I have the Eduard boxing of the M3 variant in the stash too so it better not be a nightmare!

Have never built a Kopro kit- what is the quality of the kit itself like OOB?

Well, the cockpit is pretty bland, the seat looks like almost anything, but not quite, like a K-36, the fuselage landing lights are just figured as panel lines.

The wheel wells are almost bare, the main gear legs need some work, the nozzle is :sick: and you can't do a Su 22M3 with the Su 22M3 kit as it has a rear fuselage for a Soviet version (ie a Su 17 M3).

But with a bit of work (and at least an aftermarket seat), it can be a pretty spectacular model.

As everyone says it can build up nicely with some aftermarket help. The biggest problem is that the wings are too thick but it would be major work to do anything about it so it's best left alone as most folk won't even notice it.

Finally getting round to getting some photo's up of some work, First up the Aires pit is painted and weathered, possibly overdone the cockpit a wee bit but seeing as these aircraft are 30 odd years old....maybe not!

I've cut the top intake blow in doors open as these appear to sit open when the aircraft's shut down much like a Harrier. As the plastics quite thick I've also thinned the surrounding plastic.

I've also drilled out the landing lights, there's some nice photo etch surrounds for these, planning on using Kristal Klear to glaze them.

I've also got the intake shock cone painted up, always found this to be a particularly attractive feature of the Polish Fitters...............

And finally I've added the Quickboost air scoops to the fuselage;

Ready to join the fuselage halves now which I'm not looking forward to as there's a lot to pack in, between the resin cockpit, shock cone, front undercarriage bay and rear exhaust and no decent locating pins!

Some more progress, fuselage halves are joined and seam line filled with Mr Surfacer 500. Quite pleased with how it's turned out considering how fiddly it was. Some re-scribing (oh joy, one of my least favorite tasks!) required, the panel lines are lined up on the top surface but not on the bottom of the fuselage! :confused:

There's some photo etch parts to go on the camera aperture in the nose can but I'll do that later as I'll have to mask the nosecone for painting.

Two updates in one night! I've attached the tail fin which comes in two parts the front part with the air intake and the main fin and rudder assembly, again totally devoid of any locating pins/slots. I cut out area's on both sides of the air intake to add some photo etch auxiliary intake doors.

That's how it comes Phil, a couple of sprues are in the dark grey and a couple in the light grey. Possibly down to the kit being reboxed by various different companies or maybe just how they decided to do it. I have the Eduard release too and it's obviously their own plastic as it's all in a dark grey colour.

took me months to get to this stage!!

@Björn: please finish it! it will look great in Hungarian colors! (sorry, yours look a bit off to my eyes... more green necessary?) ;)

Slowly getting there and will hopefully have the kit together as a recognizable Fitter soon. The wing sub assemblies are complete and wheel wells cleaned up with some filler.

Also been adding some photo etch bits to the fuselage and the chaff/flare dispensers.

Decided to attach the wing pylons to the wings before joining the wings to the main fuselage, glad I did as the fit of the pylons onto the wing leading edge is shocking and will require a bit of work, the dremel was out grinding away plastic and the pylons are fitted but a lot more cleaning up required.
