Sword Lightning T4 & T5

My T Bird Lightning should be on show here late Sunday or early part of next week. Seats make up beautifully with those precoloured etch parts but are a tight fit in the tub but DO fit !!! No other major issues found in building. Cockpit tub fitted very well, no issues for me there. ( I did read elsewhere of probs, but none found). And haven't had to use any filler at all!! Not like the Czech kits of the past. Must be one of Swords best models I've built so far!!

Yes it's a h*ll of a good kit. Requires a bit more work than the Airfix F2A, but that's to be expected with a shortrun kit in my opinion. Only problems I have discovered so far are the the cockpit tub which I have, contrary to a few others, found slightly too wide; thr preprinted PE instrument and sidepanels which I thought would be black (I have the T.4 kit). My biggest worry is the front of the air intake. The inside of the front edge is of uneven thickness and you are left with a nasty joint both at the top and the bottom. I wish Sword would have made the front of the intake as a separate part. I will either use the intake cover provided in the Airfix kit, or maybe get the Quickboost intake rim intended for the Trumpeter kits. Anybody tried the latter approach? BTW, the T.5 square top fin had been removed from my kit. Is that standard? As a comparison the Sword two seat Harrier kits contained all the parts for both T.2 and T.4. Only the decals differed depending on the boxing.

're the fin, yes, someone at Sword had done this to each version of the kit. I contacted them and have been informed that this practice will be stopped. With the intake rim,I carefully pared it down and tiny smear of filler sorted out the join.

I have cut the Sword intake ring off and am going to use the trumpeter nose ring also used the trumpeter intake ducting though I think the Airfix assembly would work better .

They said they got 750 of them when I picked mine up just as they were unboxing them. Did not ask if it was 750 of each of them or 750 in total.

They also told me when I asked where they were as I could not find them on the shelves, that they were sold out on the same day they got delivered. Good job they were only joking :)

According to the website, Hannants have 111 of the T.4's left and 71 of the T.5's, so that's over 550 sold in just over a week - not bad.... :coolio:

According to front page of the Hannants website they are back in stock after selling out, so its a lot more than 750 sold now. I expect these will end up being there biggest sellers of the year unless maybe the Vampire kits sell more.

Here's the email from David Hannant.

I have just made a post in WIP(lightning made for two) commenting on the errors on the Xtradecal set that features the 226OCU one. Disapponited!

I have just received the Quickboost resin nose intake from Hannants today. Although intended for the Trumpeter horror job, it looks like it's going to fit the Sword kit quite well.

Sawed off the intake rim on the Sword kit to testfit the Quickboost resin intake. Turned out to be a near perfect fit. Just need to enlarge the opening slightly. Recommed this solution to get a good looking nose on your two-seat Lightning.

Finally I have found some uses for my stock of Trumpeter Lightning bits! I used the Firestreaks from the Trumpton kit to replace Airfix's weedy efforts and now I'll be able to use the Quickboost intakes for these kits so it wasn't all wasted money.

Ok so I've been having a bash at this one. Not a shake and bake kit ,but a good one . I have replaced the intake ring with the ring and nose bullet from the trumpeter kit also used the trunking.

I also found when i placed the fuesalage on some old plans the spine a little short so I added a shimey of plastic card.

also a little inspiration a T.55 Airfix wing and belly tank should do the trick.

Happy modelling Glenn.
