Speedman
Build 17 This is a clone of the Minicraft mould with even worse decals! I have Minicraft's version and I thought those decals were badly out of register... Price: 84p eBay

Dazzio
Okay... That is interesting... :/ Bet you will need to buy a whole new set of sanding sponges after this and the Spitfire! :/ Kind Regards Dazz

Speedman
The back end is looking a little more like a Tempest... Kind of... Maybe not... Maybe... Possibly... Please squint when viewing the following photo.

Speedman
I think I'm going to have an interesting green putty to plastic ratio by the time I'm finished with this one... At least it looks like a tempest now.
Speedman
Now the back end looks like a Tempest, time to start on the front.
Speedman
Looking a bit better now. I'm going to have to carefully cut the exhausts off and reposition them, I can't believe they managed to mould them so low on the nose

Speedman
Sometimes in 1/144 you don't have much choice If only Airfix would get in on the act... The exhausts have moved up in the world...
Dazzio
Looking very good there Speedman. I remember the old Airfix 1/144's... They where horrible! I got a Viggen, F-20, F-16XL and I think a F-4 to make from them... I shudder just thinking about them. Doing well with the Tempest tho, loving the work put into it. Surely the Revell one would've been better?? Kind Regards Dazz

Speedman
I've started on the wings... The dihedral has been reduced as it was approx twice what it should have been, and I've also started to thin the wings. I'll be replacing the cannons and blisters so at least I won't have to be careful working around them
Speedman
No, it's not snowing in my room It's the result of all the scraping I had to do to thin the wings and get them roughly into shape!

Speedman
I hope you have your dust mask handy... Of course I did... Nearly there with the wings, I've given them a coating of Mr.Surfacer before the final sanding session.
snapper_city
Are you going to re-scribe it? I really need to get myself a scribing tool.
Speedman
Are you going to re-scribe it? I really need to get myself a scribing tool. Only the control surfaces, if it was a better kit I might do some of the main panel lines but I don't think it's worth it on this one. As for a scribing tool... I use my mini-drill to sharpen a length of piano wire with the side of a cutting disc, works well and I can keep it nice and sharp. The wings are finished! I drilled out the cannon ports and fitted barrel stubs to the outer positions. The kit had the longer barrels moulded in, as used on the series 1 Mk.V, but the tail code is wrong for that so I've converted it to a series 2. I also carved new blisters and fitted them. Radiator. The wings are on at last! (And the radiator has been fitted)

Will Vale
Looks really good, especially considering what it looked like in the first post. Contender for the worst kits thread?
Speedman
Contender for the worst kits thread? It's high on my list I've fitted and detailed the undercarriage today, as well as finishing off the rear of the radiator cowling. I've still got to add the inner main gear doors and I've started work on the cockpit sides as there are gaps either side of the canopy when it's on.
Speedman
I built up the cockpit sides with some strip and Mr.Surfacer then sanded it down. I've also moulded a replacement canopy and once it's cut to shape, I'll carefully cut the cockpit opening to match.
