Winenut
I couldn't work it out from the thread...at what point did you mask and then get paint on the frame of the canopy?
Flankerman
I couldn't work it out from the thread...at what point did you mask and then get paint on the frame of the canopy? I masked the canopy completely - forgetting the frames. Then I airbrushed - then had to re-mask the frames and paint by hand. Ken

Platypus
Hello,Sorry to dig out that thread. It's somehow hard to find a Su-27 boxing from Zvezda. I found one on ebay for $50... My question is if it's possible to model a Su-27 from the Su-27SM boxing? As far as I read, the main visible difference being the IRST that is offset. And looking at various build threads, the IRST could be replaced in the center with little work. Just wanted to check if I was missing other noticeable differences between the Su-27 and Su-27SM. Thanks!
Flankerman
Platypus, The Su-27SM has MFD screens on the instrument panel - so they need changing to make a 'vanilla' Su-27. You'd also need to remove the two antenna on the L/E slats - a quick wipe with file should do that. But as you rightly say, the offset IRST is the main visual difference - and it isn't as easy as you suggest. The IRST is mounted on a 'ledge' that is faired into the upper starboard fuselage - so that would need sanding down. (ignore the sensor on the right - that's a Su-35S) The shape of the offset IRST is slightly different to the centrally-mounted version - which is a simple cylindrical shape with a domed end. It is do-able - but you would need to scratch a new IRST (from clear rod?) - and then fair it in to the middle of the windscreen. Have a go - and keep us informed of how you do it ........ Ken Thanks Ken! I have a couple of Eduard PE sets for the Hasegawa kit, that should be a good base for the IP. Might have to adapt it though. For the IRST, that should be doable. Not easy, but we'll see when I dig in the Flanker boxes.
