Speedman Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 Build 14 I picked this up cheap on eBay and was going to give it a quick repaint and US markings but then I bought Sweet's Sea King and found that the decal sheet has two sets of RAF SAR markings. So I've decided to do it as a Whif RAF rescue aircraft instead. I'm hoping to be able to separate a few parts to make things easier to paint and I have a few repairs to do as a couple of blades are bent and the nose probe is broken. Unfortunately there's not much I can do to improve surface detail as the fuselage and wings are die-cast but I will be fitting a few SAR bits and bobs as I go. Price: £1.50 from eBay 1
HOUSTON Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 So how is it going.... Looks very good right now.
Speedman Posted April 15, 2014 Author Posted April 15, 2014 It's in a few pieces now so I have some Idea of how to move forward with it. Apart from the nose and canopy the whole fuselage is one big hunk of metal Unfortunately the nacelles block this screw so I can't detatch them from the wing. The pin the nacelle rotates around is glued in and I don't want to break that off so I'll just have to work on it like this. The canopy is glued in two places, I'm hoping to remove it without cracking or breaking the canopy itself. Luckily, any clean up I have to do on the inside of the glazing will be hidden by the framing. I've already given it a treatment of green putty and sanding, now it's got a nice thick coat of Mr.Surfacer on it ready for some more sanding. 1
Aimee'sDad Posted April 15, 2014 Posted April 15, 2014 Are these common on ebay at that price? I wouldn't mind having a stab at this.....
Speedman Posted April 15, 2014 Author Posted April 15, 2014 Are these common on ebay at that price? I wouldn't mind having a stab at this..... They usually go for £10-15, I guess I was lucky with this one. I've just found one listed at £58 with free postage from Germany! I've managed to remove the canopy with no damage so now I can paint the cockpit
Speedman Posted April 16, 2014 Author Posted April 16, 2014 I had finished sanding the fuselage, but then I removed a couple of lumps and bumps that were unnecessary for a SAR aircraft, so I've a bit more sanding to do! I filled the canopy holes in the cockpit as well so I can sand those at the same time. The wing box/fuselage join last night has been worked on. Using a diamond file (fantastic for working on die-cast) I've managed to get the wing box sitting flush at the rear which has, in turn, lined the front up and reduced the gaps down either side. I've also thinned the exhausts down quite a bit as well as they looked awful before. 2
Speedman Posted May 2, 2014 Author Posted May 2, 2014 It's been a while since my last update on this I've painted the cockpit, fixed the bent blades and finished off the clean up of the nacelles and I've also masked the canopy. Yes, I know I've forgotten to cut out a bit of tape in the middle... Close up shot's come in handy 1
Speedman Posted May 6, 2014 Author Posted May 6, 2014 I've decided to scribe the rear ramp and the undercarriage doors so after marking them out I cut some trenches in the metal with my mini-drill. I'm slowly filling them with Mr.Surfacer and once done I'll scribe the panel lines in. 1
Speedman Posted May 8, 2014 Author Posted May 8, 2014 After four sessions of filling and sanding, I'm ready to scribe 1
AdrianMF Posted May 18, 2014 Posted May 18, 2014 The word "bonkers" must have been invented for this build. Definitely outside of my comfort zone, but I have a strange compulsion to see what happens next.... Keep the sparks flying! Regards, Adrian
Breaker Posted May 18, 2014 Posted May 18, 2014 I think the brass in the new Search and Rescue set up need to see this, urgently
Speedman Posted May 21, 2014 Author Posted May 21, 2014 My eyes! The nacelles and props now have something other than yellow paint on them 2
Gumbie Air Services Posted May 25, 2014 Posted May 25, 2014 I wouldn't mind trying this on a 1/72 kit!
Dazzio Posted May 25, 2014 Posted May 25, 2014 That's a bit bright isn't it? . That looks fantastic, you done a superb "restoration" of this kit. I think the Royal Navy's grey/red SAR scheme with the Ace of Clubs sqn (I really do apologise, the sqn name escapes me right now) would really suit this aircraft. I might have a go at it at a future date. Any how Speedman, that is looking damn cool! Kind Regards Dazz
Speedman Posted May 28, 2014 Author Posted May 28, 2014 Thanks guys It's now finished, I should be able to post some better photos tomorrow. 4
