snapper_city Posted April 13, 2014 Posted April 13, 2014 Hi all This will be my land entry. One of Bronco's many M-24 Chaffee boxing's with RB Models metal barrels. From everything I have read about this kit it isn't a quick build comprising of many sub component builds. Having looked through the instructions I can see what they mean but I'm really looking forward to building this. The large box that it comes in. IMG_3894 by Snapper_city, on Flickr By large box I mean that is the hull in the top right corner. IMG_3895 by Snapper_city, on Flickr 3
Mozzy19 Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 Nice choice. I see you have air covered as well, how about sea? Sean
snapper_city Posted April 14, 2014 Author Posted April 14, 2014 Nice choice. I see you have air covered as well, how about sea? Sean I have a 1:700 USS Missouri in the stash but she is post 91 set up.
Shermaniac Posted April 19, 2014 Posted April 19, 2014 I'm doing a couple of Pershings first and will maybe catch up with you later
Mozzy19 Posted April 19, 2014 Posted April 19, 2014 You not started this yet? You were chomping at the bit to get going... 1
snapper_city Posted April 19, 2014 Author Posted April 19, 2014 Not really much to report so far. I have started to assemble parts of the suspension system and other little bits. Not really worth a photo yet. This is one over engineered kit.
hgbn Posted April 19, 2014 Posted April 19, 2014 Looking to be more complicated than the old Italeri M24 I have in my stash. Do it come with individual links for the track?
snapper_city Posted April 19, 2014 Author Posted April 19, 2014 They are individual track. I wi ll get some pics tomorrow to show you what I mean.
hgbn Posted April 19, 2014 Posted April 19, 2014 Do the entire "nose art" come as a decal or do you have to paint some parts of it yourself?
snapper_city Posted April 19, 2014 Author Posted April 19, 2014 Everything other than the yellow is a decal.
snapper_city Posted April 20, 2014 Author Posted April 20, 2014 (edited) Well I said not a lot had been done so far. The inside of the torsion bar suspension has been completed not that you will see any of it when it's all wrapped up. Some of the outside suspension and drag wheels have also been completed. IMG_3930 by Snapper_city, on Flickr IMG_3931 by Snapper_city, on Flickr The instruction for the above part. Tiny little plastic pins to hold parts together that will allow the suspension to move. This I feel is just more to break later on but I will see how she holds out. I'll just lock it all out if required.. IMG_3932 by Snapper_city, on Flickr I haven't attempted these yet but they are the hull casting numbers individually represented in etch. I'm thinking watered down PVA to stick them so they have some play to get them right then seal them all in with a coat of CA of Klear? Shame they don't provide enough '0's IMG_3938 by Snapper_city, on Flickr IMG_3937 by Snapper_city, on Flickr IMG_3939 by Snapper_city, on Flickr The decal sheet. IMG_3945 by Snapper_city, on Flickr IMG_3948 by Snapper_city, on Flickr Just the road and drive wheels are mini builds in themselves. IMG_3949 by Snapper_city, on Flickr The paint sheet for if I do the box option. IMG_3950 by Snapper_city, on Flickr Edited April 20, 2014 by snapper_city 1
snapper_city Posted April 27, 2014 Author Posted April 27, 2014 Hi Guys After about 4 hours all I have to show is most of the wheels and drive sprockets. Here are the seven parts that make up the drive sprocket assembly. IMG_4034 by Snapper_city, on Flickr IMG_4035 by Snapper_city, on Flickr Sixty parts cleaned up to make ten road wheels. IMG_4036 by Snapper_city, on Flickr IMG_4038 by Snapper_city, on Flickr The end of a days work.. It doesn't look much but it took ages... IMG_4039 by Snapper_city, on Flickr I only have a few bits left to make up the suspension and then I will get all the lower hull put together.. 1
Mozzy19 Posted April 27, 2014 Posted April 27, 2014 That looks to be a hideously complicated kit. You're doing a nice job so far though. Sean
kwaterous Posted April 30, 2014 Posted April 30, 2014 Can you say "overengineered"? Looks good though K 1
smuts Posted April 30, 2014 Posted April 30, 2014 Hi, looks very nice Bronco seem to be competing with Trumpeter for parts count! like the nose art too... Andy.
Vally G Posted April 30, 2014 Posted April 30, 2014 Hi Mark, I wouldn't want to have to try to file the nubs off those casting numbers! Good luck with them. Adam
Brews Posted April 30, 2014 Posted April 30, 2014 I wouldn't want to have to try to file the nubs off those casting numbers! FWIW, I think that the way to do it would be to glue them to the tank without trying to file them off, and then trim them in place with a scalpel blade.
Brews Posted April 30, 2014 Posted April 30, 2014 Here are the seven parts that make up the drive sprocket assembly. There is one part there that bemuses me as to how it was moulded. That central part - it must be slide moulded, but even so, it's complicated.
snapper_city Posted April 30, 2014 Author Posted April 30, 2014 (edited) Can you say "overengineered"? Looks good though K Compared to Tamiya for example. Yes it is... Hi, looks very nice Bronco seem to be competing with Trumpeter for parts count! like the nose art too... Andy. The parts count doesn't seem overly high when I think about it. Lets say it is nothing on the new Meng Bradley. The nose art is cool and I will either try the face or an all over winter white wash.. Hi Mark, I wouldn't want to have to try to file the nubs off those casting numbers! Good luck with them. Adam I keep putting this job off but will dive into it when I am next off. My plan is to cleanly remove them from the sprue frame as close as possible. Then hold them individually in tweezers filing them down while trying to not feed the carpet monster. I think I will give my modelling board a proper clean up and hoover it all out before attempting this.. FWIW, I think that the way to do it would be to glue them to the tank without trying to file them off, and then trim them in place with a scalpel blade. A possible idea but I would fear damaging the plastic. Also I plan to stick them with gator glue or PVA just to get them on and allow me to adjustment time. Only after they are all stuck down and dried I will give them a coat of Klear to seal them in. This is my plan. Any other methods gladly welcomed... There is one part there that bemuses me as to how it was moulded. That central part - it must be slide moulded, but even so, it's complicated. I'm not sure. There are a few parts that are free from sprue's, individually bagged themselves. The moulding of this kit is fantastic and hats off to bronco as this is a very well thought design. I will get some pics of parts to show what I mean. Check THIS review as it has pics. Also Mike's review of the British version shows more of the detail.. The kit barrel is drilled out and rifled. The end of the .30 cal's are drilled and have that distinctive flat screwdriver indent in the front. Very impressed so far. Almost a shame as I plan to replace all the barrels with RB Models metal ones... Edited April 30, 2014 by snapper_city
darson Posted April 30, 2014 Posted April 30, 2014 Hey Snapper, this is certainly no Shake 'n' Bake kit but it really rewards the effort. Keep the updates coming.
snapper_city Posted April 30, 2014 Author Posted April 30, 2014 (edited) Thanks Darren A few more pics of the pointy ends of the tank. Firstly the receiver for the big fifty which very nicely moulded. IMG_4044 by Snapper_city, on Flickr The replacement, although slightly shorter barrel against the kit option. IMG_4046 by Snapper_city, on Flickr Rifling... IMG_4047 by Snapper_city, on Flickr Looking forward to getting some more time on this and the B-29's in the next couple of days... snapper_city Posted May 4, 2014 Author Posted May 4, 2014 Today I finally got round to doing the hull numbers which I had been dreading. Before handling many tiny bits of photo etch I completely cleaned and hoovered the modelling board. IMG_4054 by Snapper_city, on Flickr So with only the carpet monster to worry about I pressed on. Once they were all clipped from the sprue they were all individually held with a razor blade and any excess removed with a new bladed scalpel. They are so small they fit on the end of a cocktail stick. IMG_4057 by Snapper_city, on Flickr And here they are attached using a tiny bit of PVA. IMG_4062 by Snapper_city, on Flickr IMG_4063 by Snapper_city, on Flickr IMG_4064 by Snapper_city, on Flickr IMG_4065 by Snapper_city, on Flickr The other side. IMG_4066 by Snapper_city, on Flickr The final result after a coat of klear to seal them in. IMG_4071 by Snapper_city, on Flickr The hull from the front. IMG_4072 by Snapper_city, on Flickr Next up will be attaching all the suspension components. IMG_4074 by Snapper_city, on Flickr 5
snapper_city Posted May 5, 2014 Author Posted May 5, 2014 Fitted workable suspension.. I can see myself locking it out as I feel it is just more to break. IMG_4076 by Snapper_city, on Flickr IMG_4077 by Snapper_city, on Flickr
snapper_city Posted May 5, 2014 Author Posted May 5, 2014 Not a massive amount to show so here are a couple of close up's of the suspension. IMG_4086 by Snapper_city, on Flickr IMG_4085 by Snapper_city, on Flickr I got some time to work on the front end today. The .30 cal barrel is from RB Models that required chopping down. IMG_4084 by Snapper_city, on Flickr IMG_4080 by Snapper_city, on Flickr Back to work tomorrow and away next weekend so will be next Sunday at best before I get time to work on this again. 3
