tempestfan
Some 20 to 25 years ago, I was in my LMS and plodding through a Phantom book(let). I was intruiged by a rather blurry photo of an F-4B, with a caption that read something like "VF-51 (?) was the only suqadron to operationally use wing gun pods on the Phantom". Rgrettably, that book was out of my budget then so remained unbought. I am convinced to this day that it was Squadron 6010 F-4 by Drendel. Looking in a reprinted version some years later, I didn't find the pic, but then sometimes Squadron replaces photos. A couple of years back I managed to obtain an earlier edition with $ price printed on the cover - but still, no trace of that pic. Can anyone pin at which book I was looking, or alternatively point me to another reference containing this or a similar pic ? Thanks !
Dr Evil
It'd be VMFA-122 that used a triple HIPEG loadout in Vietnam. A few piccies in Sqn Signals 'USMC Phantoms in Combat'. Some scanned images on the below page... http://forum.largescaleplanes.com/index.php?showtopic=33208
tempestfan
Thanks a lot ! I have the Sq. USMC book (twice, in fact, as a look in my list revealed ), but I think there's only the illustration in it, no photos, so I must have looked at something else. Being HIPEG pods, the Airfix version will not be much use as a basis, I guess.
Dr Evil
Afraid not, the Hasegawa weapons set is the only HIPEG source I know, although there's only two in each box....!
Don McIntyre
Doesn't Monogram's F-5E have a couple of those?
tempestfan
Yes, but it's 48, unlike the Airfix kit (no one ever used the pods as supplied by Airfix, and I have a number of them in my spares box).
Finn
If you want to research what VMFA-122 used in Vietnam, look here: http://www.recordsofwar.com/vietnam/usmc/VMFA-122.htm D-24 is the code for the Mk-4 gun pod (HIPEG), D-20 being the code for 20mm ammo. Panoz
Doesn't Monogram's F-5E have a couple of those? Monogram ones are SUU-16s. Yes, but it's 48, unlike the Airfix kit (no one ever used the pods as supplied by Airfix, and I have a number of them in my spares box). IIRC the Airfix ones are a very poor representation of SUU-23s.
tempestfan
What they are meant to represent exactly I don't recall; poor, they are !
