davetwin
Is anyone getting bored of photoetch pictures yet Finished off the smoke stack. Started with these to make the cover Then these had to be added To make this, hold and fold being useful just holding And done, I had to trim the plastic grate off of the kit surround to stick the PE on instead, I left this till the end until I was sure I could assemble the PE cover Thats the smoke stack pretty much wrapped up as far as PE goes, just the walk way around the bottom to assemble with some railings and ladders and its all done Edited July 15, 2014 by davetwin

snapper_city
That smokestack is looking great. Giving me shudders though as I have the Missouri with Pontos update in the stash. I will have to set aside a year maybe to get her done.. Fine work again and agreed with the looking forward to paint.
davetwin
Thanks for all the comments I must admit the other day I had a what the hell have I let myself in for moment, with all the railings and ladders still to do After having a little break to make a start on my Chibi Maru Akagi I got right back on it and put some more railings on. SWMBO was very impressed with all the brass and was trying to convince me to leave it unpainted as it would be a shame to hide all the brass A bit of primer splashed on some parts too
longshanks
Looking good ! You might suggest to SWMBO that she keeps them polished
davetwin
Been at the PE again, more railings, ladders added as well as some sandbags too Using macro zoom as usual, this camera mode has its benefits as I have just spotted some rails that need straightening
davetwin
After some slow but steady progress I finally finished all te PE on the island super structure. Here it is all primed and done, along with some other little bits that have been primed. Some joints need a little attention, not quite as bad with the naked eye as with macro zoom. I have also switched from the Vallejo Primer I was using to Tamiyas Fine surface primer straight from the rattle can. Parts for smoke stack Parts for the tower structure Parts for Island Super structure Bent railings on rear part now straightened Main Island super structure finished, I will spray the whole thing Kure Grey and then tackle the sand bags and nav lights with a brush. If you look really closely there are some cobwebs showing up, these have all been removed now. This ladder was a bit of a challenge, you have to bend the railings and then each individual step had to be bent the angle they are at now otherwise it would have effectively been a slide. Ex-FAAWAFU
PE cobwebs is just taking accuracy to a whole new level!
davetwin
Sat in the garden today and got the compressor out, I finally have the hull sprayed up with soe other parts too. I originally stuch the achor chain down to be paint kure grey as it is in a reference book I have but I am now wishing I hadn't. Its a bit late now to do anything about it so I am thinking of perhaps doing a black or steel dry brush on it, what are your thoughts on this? Im sure you can imagine how much paint is need on a hull this size. I made up a while pot 10ml pot of Tamiya Kure Grey with the addition of 5ml of Ultimate Airbrush Thinner. I just kept going with the spraying and other parts until they had a nice coating (several light coats) and I ran out of paint. I actually managed to work my way through 3 airbrushes, Due to the heat they get clogging up. I have a H&S Ultra 2-1 and 2 cheap chinease generic airbrushes, 1 with the side cub and one with the bottle that goes under the end of the airbrush, the latter being the one used for most of the hull due to its size. davetwin
Thanks foxy It was tricky doing that bit A bit more to feast our eyes over, I have had to stop now as I am exhausted You will notice I have one of the kit silver etch ladders in place of where one of the small 4mm ladders goes, this is because I broke that and the 2 spares

davetwin
Thanks Riggers Short update as I have now finished the PE on the tower, a few more ladders and railings added. You will notice that 3 of the Tamiya's own etch ladders have had to be used due to breakages. This was possibly the most diificult part of the build to date, if you look closely at the brass ladders you will see that they have nice steps, each one has to be rotated 90 degrees individually after the ladder railing has been bent.
