A little while back I posted a couple pics of some work on a MAch kit of the 1/72nd DC-4 and partly finished. well I've done it and here are some pics. The model might still need a little tidying but I wanted to show it off now before I wreck it in trying to tidy it up!!

Douglas DC-4, C-FIOM, Buffalo Airways, Yellowknife, NWT, Canada. Current!

The airscoop on the forward port upper cabin area is from a 1/72 ME109G with one side flattened to fit, antennas from scrap and bristles, decals a mix of custom made and Leading Edge DC-3 decals, props form our friend here John Aero(club)!!

Lovely job, especially from a Mach 2 kit.

That's lovely Paul,...well done! I have one of those which I intend to start soon, when I pluck up the courage!

Nice job Paul. Arnie (RIP) would be proud of your DC-4. Ever since his passing and the personnel changes at Buffalo, I no longer watch the "Ice Pilots NWT" show because it is now way too scripted reality drama. If they cut out the drama and showed more cockpit and flight scenes, I may have another look.

Cheers guys. Tend to agree Aerofan, re the Tv series, but I still like watching just for the aeroplanes. Often some interesting views. Its how I got to find out the upperwing colouring for the DC-4. I did a 'still' from TV for this purpose. There must have been a fin mounted camera looking forward.

Hey Paul:

You have really done a wonderful job with this kit, like the colorful paint job and the way you finished this short run expensive one.

I have seen a Mach Two DC4 but the owner disliked it because have watched the passenger windows have trouble, I was wondering how did you remedy the windows trouble.

Thank you very much for sharing!!! Cheers,

Nice job on that, a nice reminder of one of the few series I could be bothered with & that mainly for the planes. Thanks for sharing it with us.

Awesome! I ended buying the diecast ( buffalo store had them on sale!).

I tend to agree with both of you, the up-drama is a little corny, probably some doofus in CBC Vancouver playing it up for appeal that turns off the target audience. Hence the beauty of PVR's, FFWD to airplane stuff!!

Considering this a Mach 2 kit, I think it not unreasonale that a knighthood should be considered for your efforts.

well maybe a bit over the top Sir Paul

Thank loyal servants! You may be seated.

Luis: the side cabin windows were also decals done for me and the right size. As for the kit glazing, I filled and blended them in sanding smooth. Only feint 'witness ' outlines showing through when I applied the fuselage cheatline. This was good as it enabled me to place the window decals in the right places. The cockpit roof glazing was done by working out where they should be, indicated them with lines by using pointed blade and then scraping away excess paint and a bit of buffing. The main windshield are as per kit.

I have to say the fitting of the engines to the wings was one of the biggest nightmares I found in building . They ponited inwards and upwards/downwards!!! Cutting away plastic and inserting plastic got them in a more or less right position.

Somehow I don't think I'll do another again.

PS: A week or so ago I noticed that Minicraft are issuing their1/144 DC-3, DC-4 and Lockheed Electra in Buffalo decals!!! Whahay!!! But I just wonder when and whether they will re tool the Electra. So I will have to source the 1/144 Platz Curtiss now for sure!!

Another PS: When I took it indoors last night wife said wondered what I was going to do with it? I ignored that and asked if she liked it. Her answer was " Yeah its Ok, but I don't like the black stripes, they look like you've stuck on insulating tape!" :chair:

Very nice indeed. Lovely finish and an interesting and attractive colour scheme. How was the build? I've got Mach 2's Valiant to build!

Building the Dc-4 was a challenge. cutting, scraping, filling, sanding, cursing, dry fitting and perseverence!!

A 1/144 C-46 in these markings would have been nice too, it was always my favourite.

Paul J,

Thanks for the heads up on the new markings for the Electra's. I see these guys occasionally helping us out on fires and hope to see the new tankers soon.

Thanks quasi...and JWM. The MACH kit is a devil of a kit to put together! Now with the Revell kit coming very soon, I am not sure if I'll do another Buffalo one. Re the oil stains they are hidden on the black areas on the wings
