1/32 Tornado

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Fantastic idea, don't suppose you are going to do a 1/32 Tornado/Typhoon kit are you?

Hi Pittnuma,

Thanks.

I've managed to borrow a 1/32 Tornado from a friend and am working on the kit at the moment. I expect to launch it just after Easter.

Will consist of:

Two strobes (off set flash)

Wing Tip lights (steady)

Tail light (steady)

Two intake Nav lights (steady)

As with the Hawk kit will run off 2 x AA batteries.

Price will be between £20 - £25 + P&P.

Cheers,

Warren

Your a star, count me in sir, oh 1 thing, mine will be an F3 conversion, will that make any difference to the lengths etc do you think?

Any chance on a Eurofighter?

See no reason why I wouldn't do a Eurofighter too.

Out of interest what are the differences in the lights between a GR Mk1 and a F3 Tornado.

Cheers,

Warren

Hmm, after some research it would seem there is no difference that I can find, will do some more searching and get back to you.

Nope no difference that I can see

The only difference between various types of Tornado might be the colour of the strobes, some are red, some are white and the Intake Nav lights, earlier ones had coloured lenses and the later versions used coloured lamps, though which version had what I don't know.

Might have to do a number of kits to cover the range.

Warren

Warren,

Hopefully the GPU I ordered from DJP will arrive shortly, I aim to fit the batteries inside that, ouof curiosity, is it possible to run this off watch batteries (could use a few in series??) or similar, rather than AA's? Thinking of the size.

How big is the AA battery housing?

So I can try to "come up" with something to hide it away.

Darren,

It should be okay to run on watch batteries in parallel the only issue can be that the steady lights dim slightly when the strobes flash, don't have that problem with the AA batteries, until they start running down.

The holder is 60mm long x 30mm wide x 15mm deep.

Cheers,

Warren

Looking great.

GPU arrived this morning, will fit AA's comfortably.

Shame can't somehow add landing gear lights, but probably never find a light that would look right..

Landing light might be possible as you can drill out the back of the clear parts and insert a small prewired LED. Need to look at that a bit more and will probably do it as a second kit as not everyone will want landing lights and they would add another £8-10 to the basic kit.

Ahh right, good idea.

I'm a long way off from worrying about a landing light yet though...!!

Darren,

Looking at the Eurofighter there doesn't appear to be too many lights on it. Strobes top and bottom, wing tip Nav lights and Landing lights on the wheel well doors.

Are there any others that I have missed?

Cheers,

Warren

Hi Warren,

Tail fin. From what I can see in vids and the kit there do not seem to be any on he side of the intakes etc

I see the formation strips are very evident on the Typhoon

Note the slower timing on the strobe

Hi Darren,

Thanks for those, very useful. Are the formation stripes lights or some form of fluorescent material.

Are the Navigation light lenses clear or coloured, the Revell kit shows coloured but you never know.

Missed the tail light as the Revell kit doesn't have a clear part for it.

Cheers,

Warren

Ahhh good question, not sure. Let me look into that for you.

edit, thinking about it, you switch the formation lights on from the cockpit, so they must be lit...

Looks clear

Got it and replied. Time is my only concern if you needed a completed model shot but installation shots are fine.

Thanks for that Darren,

Back from a week in Cornwall so pushing on with the Tornado kit this week.

This is all getting a bit serious now so will need to sort out a better soldering iron and probably a heat gun as SWMBO is fed up of me pinching her hair dryer for the heat shrink!!

Cheers,

Warren

Little bit of progress, proper wok getting in way after a week off!

These are the SMD LEDs that I am using for the tail and nav lights, AA battery is for a size comparison! They are wired using enamelled wire which is just slightly thicker than a human hair.

And here they are fitted to the kit.

Hopefully a bit more this evening.

Cheers,

Warren
