1970's Vulcans- need a little help please!

Recommended Posts

Hi, I've just been commissioned to build a Vulcan for a work colleague who'd like it finished in a 1970's Green/Grey/White scheme.

Can anyone help with details of aircrew clothing, i.e. bonedome or cloth helmets, flying suit, boot & glove colours, ?? blue pressure jerkin with built in Mae West??- was one worn at that time?

For the airframe, Humbrol colours please, and what style of jet pipe for the low level version, and any other relevent info?

I have bulit a couple in anti-flash white & Black Buck colours, but want to get this one right for him.

regards and Thanks for now, Adrian.

Hi mate. 70s Vulcans were mostly Light aircraft grey underneath, though a few were white.

The official colours you would need are Humbrol, 165, 163, 166. Though the Green looks a bit cheerful as they very quickly faded to a darker brown olive drab look.

As for the engines you can have 201, 202, Available in resin from Frieghtdog. There are plenty of machines with 301s too, But the kit ones flare out at the ends incorrectly. they should run more paralell with the tubes, I have just had to correct this nightmare on my current build a few days ago, Still rushing to get it done.

You need to watch out for which airframe had which mods, and when so pick a Vulcan with lots of photos from the same year/era. as things changed, like, does it have or not have any arangement of the following.

Nose thimble, IFR probe, What type of Fin cap, Tail cone 3 variants on the b2, what under wing mods does it have such as skybolt fittings front and rear, skybolt plate etc..

You also need to get the right type of stencils, If you have the lastest boxing from airfix they are only suitable for XH558 as she is now, Not the same as she was in the 90s and not the same as in service Vulcans.

You will find these two websites very helpful

Cheers Rob ;)

Hi

The Aircrew Flying Clothing Colours can be hard to pin down due to a lot of kit was used at the time.

Helmets used MK1A Silver with blue/grey g-helmet early later the helmet was green - MK2A - White MK3C Green or White if in Hot Overseas.

Coveralls MK 7 blue/grey Early 70s but a few still in use in 1979 only till we could get them of the older aircrew at servicing time, MK 9 & MK 11 Green, MK 10 Imersion suit Green.

Boots Black Normal Brown if in Hot weather kit or Summer uk only and never with Im-Suit.

Gloves white never saw the green fighter ones as the hand signals from cockpit could not be clearly seen.

LSJ's MK4s = Yellow / Orange Later ones Green.

Parshal -persure jerkin early ones blue/grey with yellow LSJ later ones green with yellow lsj very few green ones about. This was only worn by 27 Sqn in the 70s & to the end of 27 Sqn on Vulcans and was hardly worn i can only remember them useing them twice the missons where called Bombay Ducks so when they came in a few days before the trip and said we are doing a Bombay Duck trip it meant a lot of work for us.

That all i have time for just now hope it helps.

I was a SE- FITT at Scampton on Vulcans and this was part of my job.

Hi fellas,

Thank you both for your replies, we're beginning to narrow things down a bit.

I've seen a decal set at Hannants that fits the bill for a Waddington and I think a Scampton based aircraft from the 1970's, both in green/grey/white schemes.

If you can both fill me in with some more detail, I'll get their in the end. I'm quite lucky in that I have a blue pressure jerkin displayed with a Mk 1 Taylor pressure helmet at Doncaster,

is this the same pattern as the green jerkin if needed?

Thanks again Adrian

It's probably best to find as many photos as possible of your chosen airframe from all angles possible from the same year, all the airframes would have different mods at different times, or carried different markings. Rarely would they stay the same.

They were all different so pick carefully.

I have my eyes on making XM611 as seen here.
