Cheers!

I've given the A a couple of coats of Tamiya XF-2 flat white on the undersides and upper control surfaces where needed. As I'm portraying it fresh out of the paint shop, this was followed by a couple of coats of Clear to seal it and prevent any grubby fingerprints from ruining it. I didn't bother with a photo as white on white primer doesn't really show up that well. :P

The B & D were pre-shaded and I've tried out an interesting technique Andrew has used on his 1/72 build Link. Stupidly tricky in 1/144 but it will probably get easier with practice. The effect has worked quite well and should become more pronounced once I've given it a filter and Clear coat. Thanks Andrew

I've sprayed the B and post-shaded it, the D has had it's underside colour only. My tablet's camera really struggled to get a decent photo of the B, it looks a lot better in the flesh :( Next step... Masking!

Really impressive work there, Speedman.

That process would be very hard to realise in 1/144 (well, for me anyway), but it looks and sounds like you've achieved the intent. Well done! Thanks for the kudos but I've only followed others' examples as I've stumbled across them - Honza K's build of a 1/48 Super Hornet is among them. I know that I'll be using and experimenting more with this technique in the future.

cheers,

Andrew.

I like the result shown in the picture, if in the flesh it's even better then I'd say you have a very good looking model on its way !

I like the effect because I find it realistic while not being exagerated, something that in a small scale like 1/144 would IMHO not look great

You're cracking on with these Speedman. Brilliant job on the paint I think that Andrew and you have mastered the faded paint that seems prevalent on the Tomcat very well. A very novel approach.

Cheers :) After a few more hours of masking I've finished the main painting on the B & D. 3 tone tactical scheme in 1/144... :wall::banghead: One of the most fiddly things I've ever had to do!

Due to the limitations of my tablet's camera, I have enhanced the contrast of this in Photoshop to better match what it really looks like. I've not done any post shading or filtering yet, the "mottled" effect is purely down to the pre-shading.

Thanks :)

I've given it a filter which has evened out the shade differences and added some light and dark post shading so it looks more like a well used Cat now. I've also painted the exhaust nozzles and weapons.

As promised, I took some better shots of them today. While taking them I noticed that as well as building the three stages of the F-14's life cycle, but I've managed to do the three stages of cleanliness as well. The A is fresh out of the paint shop, the B has a few weeks worth of grubbiness on it and the D is nearing the end of it's cruise. :P

Good going to get all three finished (all those weapons and stores - my head hurts!).

Lovely result for all of them as well; you've captured the look of each of them very well and in a tiny scale. Marvellous work. It's interesting to think that nearly 30 years separates the scheme applied to the bicentennial jet and that of the other two....

Andrew.

These are 3 great looking models ! Even more impressive considering their small size. I like the way you managed to get 3 very different looking Tomcats, from the showbird to the dirty old warrior. They sum up well the career of this wonderful aircraft
