Devilfish
I won this Revell Mk1 Viper on E-bay. Unlike the later Mobeius Mk2 and VII this is a basic 1970's kit, designed more for kids who were fans of the show (as I was, but couldn't get hold of the kit at the time ) Anyway, it has no cockpit detail at all. Not much of a problem as it has no cockpit glass either.... So the first thing to do is open the windows... Then start building a cockpit. I decided, rather than stay true to the 1970's version, I would make this a true Mk1 in respect to the Mk2 I already have. I.E, I can't scratchbuild an accurate cockpit, so I'm making it up..... Nose leg bay, "borrowed" from a 1/48 Tornado. This kit also has no landing gear, as it was hardly seen in the series. Again, I am not being true to the series here. Cockpit so far The seat may look familiar to some... borrowed from a Revell Hawk
Devilfish
The cockpit is done. I have, for the time being, scratchbuilt a joystick. Next job to tackle is the nose inlet/duct/thing. Because this was designed as a model/toy, it appears to have a set-up that looks like it was a missile launcher. Internal structures and a hole underneath tend to suggest a firing mechanism. To make it more like the Mk2, I decided to change this too. Start by cutting back the inlet And meshing it. With what? With this.... 2 for a £1 from, you guessed it, Poundland! Cut Stuck Looks like a Bugatti radiator grill now On to the back end...The first thing to do is make main leg bays. And then fill in the stand hole.
Madmonk
Looking good Paul. That original nose looks very strange! Cheers, Warren
Devilfish
Tht's because you are looking at it the wrong way round. It's a scoop and all that is seen is the rim. The bit I cut off sits inside the fuselage and would have, I suspect, held a missile for all 8 year olds to take each others eyes out with. (toys were more fun before H&S came on the scene!) Carts
A kit with a solid cockpit frame ,that's harsh! But hopefully good fun to up-grade.Great idea with the splatter screen, despite me having no idea what one is
Devilfish
I did a few modifications to make it more "new universe" BSG. the main one being the addition of reaction control thrusters around the plane. I made a template up and used it to drill a pair of holes in various places. And then I started putting on the red for the stripes...
Devilfish
Been busy with this one. Masked up the stripes and painted on the grey. I used a Revell grey and I think it suits it perfectly! Then I added some decals spare from my Mk2, and a serial made up from an old Star Trek Runabout kit... Next thing to do is build some landing gear.... bigVern1966
I had the kit when i was a kid (1980) the nose indeed contained a Missile operated by a button on the bottom. Revell did release a revamped one about 10 years ago with clear canopy, cockpit, pilot and clear engine internals. I've got a copy of both (Revells first released version had the solid cockpit). Devilfish
I had it too, but in the 90's, when the missile had been removed due to H&S concerns, lol, but it still had no cockpit. Progress.....A bit of weathering and the landing gear has been started Edited March 24, 2014 by Devilfish
Devilfish
Cockpit is now glazed and the landing gear finished
