robvulcan Posted April 1, 2014 Author Posted April 1, 2014 looking good still - its a shame that Airfix produced such a great kit but neglected the engine detail front and back - when I built mine I used resin aftermarket sets - hats off to you for undertaking all the extra fiddly work in this area - good luck with the remaining assembly I will need it. I have build many Airfix Vulcans. Mostly the later boxings. This is an early boxing and the fit is much worse than any other I have encountered. NOTHING fits properly.... The intakes are getting there. I used Resin here the Wolf pack ones. Its not the fault of them its the molding around this area was distorted. The top half of the Fuselage twisted and with a hump in. and also the intake top and lower sections curled a little making them wider. The wings are not helping me either. The tail cone and tail look ok.... Still working on the intakes and exhausts but I am getting close to the "I can live with it stage" Cheers Rob Here is were I am up too. At least no one can say I have not tried... Cheers Rob 1
nimrod54 Posted April 1, 2014 Posted April 1, 2014 At least no one can say I have not tried... Cheers Rob Take heart mate, nobody can say that about any of your builds. Each one that I have seen you do is well researched and has always had maximum effort which has produced great results. Due to its age this is a difficult kit to work with, but considering what you started with you're well on the way to producing another stunner. Nice job on adding the fairings to the exhausts, by the way. The paint may still be soft when you get it to Cosford, but I am sure you will make it. 1

Thanks, Well when you love a subject the effort is no problem. Its just that time I guess. sHEESH it goes fast... Well I still have not got the wings on and I am STILL sorting the intakes and exhausts out... Nearly there but Its never gonna be perfect. For every little blemish I fill and polish out with mesh files etc,,, another will appear. The intakes have had lots of paint on, I hope the masks are still gonna work ok. I guess There Is only one way to find out,,, Weathering can help me with the Exhausts. But considering were they started I am happy. The good news is the Tail cone looks to be a good fit. Oddly this is the piece that usually does not fit. Paint soft and done for Sunday would be good. Just taking a leaf out your book having some lunch and coffee. Then back too it. I need to let the last coat of paint cure off before I do any more sanding so as to not cock it up and its nearly there. So I am starting to turn my attention to the wings. I need to klear coat the tiddler too. Cheers Rob
Cookenbacher Posted April 1, 2014 Posted April 1, 2014 That's some excellent putty work on the exhausts! 1
robvulcan Posted April 1, 2014 Author Posted April 1, 2014 That's some excellent putty work on the exhausts! About 18 Hours work in total... But worth It. Cheers Rob 1
robvulcan Posted April 1, 2014 Author Posted April 1, 2014 At last I think I have pretty much won the battle with the intakes and exhausts. Sure a blemish here and there if you look really hard I suppose they could be better. But I think I am safe to move on to the wings et al. and may be give them one work over with The micro mesh lollipops I made. In the end a circular stone piece twisted with the finger sped up the job. A suggestion from my mate Steve who used to be a stone carver. He said the pads were simply replicating the problem. He was right. photos soon
robvulcan Posted April 1, 2014 Author Posted April 1, 2014 Ok , A quick update from a now worried modeller. This is like Countdown.... I have modded the tail cone back to the original ECM shape, Actually its the second variant of the 3, It lacks the 2 underneath fittings and has the smaller but elongated tip. All I did was sand the kit item back to profile the tail cone shape after removing the two fittings, reduced the tip curve to the right shape. No measuring here just sighting it up. Then polished with Micro-mesh. The Tiddler has its ECM plates complete and the inner of the exhausts blacked out. The intakes.... Well they look better than this now but Whatever I do there is little imperfections that look worse here than in person. I have sanded them back some more. but I am happy with them. Since the paint has leveled off a bit they look a bit better now. My excuse (real ones have panel beating if you look ,,,,,eh hem ) The exhausts I am pretty happy with since I have to entirely scratch build them in the end. And a bonus is they look more like 301s than the Odd kit flared out ones..... (Flares.... well this kit was made in the 70s.. whats not to like !) Ah the belly of the beast........... Again nothing fits properly..... sand sand sand sand sand..... Super glue gel for gap filling is ace.,,,, more sanding,,,,,( I am knackerd gimme the beer,...... ) I made this to do the Klear inside the intakes of the Little tiddlers air intakes. Bit of fresh sponge super-glued to a cocktail stick. Blending blending and more blending..... On goes the tail cone. The tiddler has had a few wipes over with Klear again with a sponge. Tonight at work I can tackle those pesky windows with some matt black heavily thinned with Flow Improver. with a piece of guitar string set in blue tak. and A fine piece of sprue set in blue tak. Then more klear, decals, Varnish, Stand Bomb blue tak'd in and done.. The masks are merely "sights" for me to try and get the radome line in the right/ "or close as too" place for scribing. .....................But will I finish the big bird.... .......... Cheers guys. brianthemodeller Posted April 1, 2014 Posted April 1, 2014 Keep going Rob! Having just built two of the Airfix beasts I understand your pain - I have never used so much filler on a kit before. And there's a lot of plane to sand. The cleaner in the Premier Inn where I was staying must gave wondered what I had been up to with all the fine white powder on the desk... 3
Kilo Tango Posted April 1, 2014 Posted April 1, 2014 Good job Rob, nice paintwork , which is usually where I mess up 1

Aye they are a pain but this one is REALLY BAD ! I've built over 15 of these and they are not that bad. But this one is so distorted its almost funny. The wings or body is bent the mating surfaces are off a mile. Made the best fit I can its setting now. Gonna take some filing etc... Just hope she sits right ! Good job Rob, nice paintwork , which is usually where I mess up Cheers mate yep the paint experiment worked well. I can't wait to see the big one like it Blimey Rob, I made this many many years ago and I had forgotten just how big it was. Yep she's sure a big gal, gorgeous too. Funny the vulcan looks huge but by today's standards its nowt. Still no Cessna though lol. Cheers dudes Well I am at work I've done nothing but model it is strange to come out into the real world but I am alone at work now with the tiddler and a quickly thrown together modelling on the go tool kit A selection of spare plastic and guitar string trimmings for mounting in blue tak and a cocktail stick to do the windows with very thinned down black paint using Flow improver. Cheers Rob lets sort the little lead beltcher out !
robvulcan Posted April 2, 2014 Author Posted April 2, 2014 (edited) Wah hey !! The tiddler is nearly there just need stencils and final varnish, and it bomb of course. But here she is I sorted her windows with guitar string Here she is with the B1a XH498 for my first model show at cosford last year. They make a nice pair little n large Cheers Rob Edited April 2, 2014 by robvulcan 3
robvulcan Posted April 2, 2014 Author Posted April 2, 2014 Well I am optimistic this morning. But there is still a long road ahead.... whats that song... "The Long and Sanding Road........................." Great track that.. Well the wings are on. solid too and Its looking like a Vulcan. But with having to do my best to get the anhedral correct. The one wheel looks like its doing a 8 pint shuffle to the left. So I will have to devise a way to set them at the same angle and then hope that it sits right and don't look like one that's had a heavy landing... Like this poor one here. I started the day with a quick tidy.. It was looking a little like hell after yesterday. Here is the fight for the next few hours... Thanks to my mum who has supplied me with an arsenal of nail files... Though I think I might need to take a belt sander to this one.. Cheers Rob 1
general melchett Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 Looking good Rob, just one thing..........the shows been cancelled ! .....nah not really, sorry couldn't resist, poor attempt at humour and one day too late !, The tiddler looks the dogs danglies but I see the big fellas giving you the requisite amount of grief necessary for an Airfix Vulcan build, keep going and follow the light.....you're nearly(ish) there....... (btw re your text I've sent a message...), Melch 1

(btw re your text I've sent a message...), Melch Hi mate. LOL haha. You actually had me going there for a second or two. LOL.... Glad you like the Tiddler. I love it. In the end I painted the ECMs with Citadel "Lead Belcher" , Seemed appropriate and looks smack on for XM595. What I mean by forward sections are the Triangular parts that fold in , These are white on 595 and the rear flat rectangular sections Dark silver. Its sure giving me Grief but I feel happer now the wings are one. I will work it today as much as possible around work. The I have Friday and Sat 48 hours to work. Minimal sleep being the order of the day. I am having trouble filling gaps, Milliput is ok but I am having more success with Super glue Gel I find because its plasticized it sands better than normal stuff if you get it before its totally gone off. However For the final finish any suggestions how I can smooth it out.. I could try my poly slime if I can find it, But what about Glue n Glaze. Its a PVA for gap filling and windows but is It sandable Cheers Rob (sorry for nagging)
general melchett Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 Perfect Putty Rob, it's just the ticket. Minimal sleep being the order of the day. No sleep 'til Hammersmith eh....well take it easy mate, tis only a model ! 1
robvulcan Posted April 2, 2014 Author Posted April 2, 2014 Perfect Putty Rob, it's just the ticket. No sleep 'til Hammersmith eh....well take it easy mate, tis only a model ! Only a model yes. However I have just realise I have less hours at work this week which ain't good but it is in a sense I have more time to model. This Vulcan Is putting a smile on my face now as I sand the wings into submission. I have found circular sanding helps irradiate seams easier. Just tried the Undercarriage loose and she site ok too which made me very happy. I am using some guitar string for the steering column. As regards smaller details. I am not sure weather to : 1. Leave off til last min and tak on with PVA so If they get knocked they won't hurt the paint. 2. Glue em on and risk it when Painting. 3. Omit them all together. Cheers Rob
general melchett Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 circular sanding irradiate seams easier. Blimey you're taking this nuclear role a bit seriously !! I tend to leave the detail stuff off until after painting and then fit with Gator glue (PVA), certainly wouldn't risk them before hand.....if that helps... 1

I tend to leave the detail stuff off until after painting and then fit with Gator glue (PVA), certainly wouldn't risk them before hand.....if that helps... Aye I think that's the route I will tread. I am sorry for all the apparently "stupid" questions, I can figure it out myself but I always like to ask how others go about such things as sometimes you find new and better ways.Cheers General Well I have been working hard on the wings sanding and filling the 1.5mm gaps with super glue gel and sanding it back. I have done this 3 times on the top. The bottom is not much better I have not done much here but I have had no option but to loose some of the sky bolt panel this wing is that crooked I had a choice , gap or detail. But she is getting there I started to turn my attention to the wheels, here I have used a piece of guitar string for the nose wheel steering column. I have some spares so I have picked the best parts of what I had. Here is the assembled nose wheel glued with super glue gel I can't believe how robust this now seems wow,,,, You can see the guitar string in the v section The tiddler is nearly done and I am about to finish its stencils off. Just needs the final coat the bomb painting and a stand, I might just borrow a corgi one. Cheers Rob Edited April 2, 2014 by robvulcan 3

I've got a photograph somewhere of my sister standing like that, taken during her gawky teen years. Another piece of ammunition for this Lancastrian to tease his Yorkie sibling with. They are really coming together now Rob, the tiddler looks fantastic and the wing of the 'Big V' is starting to look much better. You show remarkable patience, I think that I may have been tempted to get some discus practice in a time or two. Just keep it going, the finish line is in sight now. 1

Haha you have fun with that, Yep I do have a hell of a lot of patience with things, especially stuff I love and care about. It's usually rewarding. Still a lot to do. I have a slim chance I might do it. Cheers mate Right update time good morning. The tiddler has had all the decals done now the small stencils really add a Hell of a Lot to the look though I need to do better pics after she's had her final satin varnish coat. Pictured here with last years B1a XH498 is my model of XM595 "The Tiddler" (cheers for the name John) I guess with the B1a being smaller they should be called "Tiddler 'n Titch" Cheers 1
robvulcan Posted April 3, 2014 Author Posted April 3, 2014 Well Its update time. I need some help... I have made the Undercarriage up with exception to one part that seems far too long... Am I doing something wrong... The undercarriage is loosely fitted without the Forward struts on the rear legs. I am surprised how tough they are The Problem I have is this.... Here is the part fitted as it should. Which results in this...... So please help me were am I going wrong. My thoughts are it needs shortening a lot ! .. Cheers Rob t
nimrod54 Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 Rob, If you have a look at the Walkaround section on here there are some good views of the undercarriage arrangement that may help you. From a quick look you may be right about needing to shorten that forward strut.

I just Hope we have some good weather for painting the next few days. Getting very excited about this now. Cheers Rob
nimrod54 Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 Hey Rob, slightly off topic here bud, just noticed that Hannants are selling Cyber-Hobby's 1/200 B.2 for £9.99. Is this a good kit? 1
