robvulcan Posted March 30, 2014 Author Posted March 30, 2014 On this one it looks like MSG dirty though. http://www.airliners.net/photo/UK---Air/Avro-698-Vulcan/1169579/L/
robvulcan Posted March 30, 2014 Author Posted March 30, 2014 Update time. On the big one XM597 I have been spending hours tidying up the Inakes... Hard work. I worked on the edges of the intakes beveling them and smoothing them off so they are rounded like the real thing rather than coming to a sharp edge. They should look tough not fragile. I give it a spray of grey paint to see what needed sorting as I approach getting to the finer finish on the intakes. I hope I can get them smooth. So I made some tools to help me. Super glued to the ends of an old brush I have some 1200 wet and dry and a some micro-mesh to give me a small spongy sanding pad to help the process. I am now about to try and milliput and damp cotton bud them into submission and they will be what they will be I guess. On the little one the masks are off on the radar areas now its just a case of doing the ECM plates when I can decide on a colour, Looking like a medium to darkish grey should do the trick. The citadel metallic's are amazing this is brush painted with a few coats and it looks like foil. Right then on with the milliput 1
nimrod54 Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 Fantastic stuff Rob, absolutely cracking job an the tiddler's paint and sterling work on the big one. I know the intakes are proving difficult but stick with it, I am sure they will look great in the end. Pity I can't be at Cosford next week, I would have liked to have seen them. But I will be busy with preparations for fit of a new kitchen over the Easter break. You can guess where I would rather be.
Cookenbacher Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 (edited) The little Vulcan looks incredible Rob! I'm really eager to try out the blu-tak masking technique. Of course, now my expectations are probably too high from seeing your results. Keep up the the good work! Edited March 30, 2014 by Cookenbacher

I doubt they will be perfect if they are not my excuse will be "panel beating from too much howling" (everyone likes an excuse) Its interesting people are liking the paint job after my experiment on it. I wish you was going to Cosford it would be great to meet you. I don't think I have met you yet. I met plenty of people at Telford but it was so busy and so quick I am not sure if I remember everyone. Not names at least faces sure. Enjoy the Kitchen sink. Cheers Rob The little Vulcan looks incredible Rob! I'm really eager to try out the blu-tak masking technique. Of course, now my expectations are probably too high from seeing your results. Keep up the the good work! Cheers Cookenbacher the blue tak thing is easy just make sure your curves flow well using sausages first and then fill it out after. I recommend doing the opposite of convention do the Darker colour first and then do your lighter last. Its easier for you to perceive the darker pattern and copy it. If you do it the other way its very hard going and confusing as the tak is lighter in colour you half the time end up making the wrong parts and get jaggy edges as your inverting it. This is what I find at least. If you do it this way you are focusing on the primary visual (darker colours) and I always do it this way now. I will do the darker colour on the big one first too. Only other thing is mist the paint from various angles do not flood it ever or it looks awful after. Bigger curves = softer edge. Smaller curves = harder edges (curves here relate to sausage diameter) Hope this helps Righty ho then update time. The inakes,,,,,,,,,sigh...... Oh the damn intakes...... even with resin its a nightmare I tell thee....... Its taking ages to get these pigs to look good. I doubt I will get them perfect the fit aint that bad but its such an awkward area to work in whilst trying not to know the tamia tape and blue tak. I have little faith its going to look good.. In the past I have not really bothered working that much with these deciding it to be too much hassle for my weekend build Vulcans of the past. But I must try.. so. Its time for milliput, dental tools, damp cotton buds, swearing, headaches, beading brow, stress, fear, and a long heart felt prayer to any deity who might take pitty on me and send me some luck..... I have not gone over board with it as the trouble with milliput is you sometimes thing its smooth and then when the paint goes on you can see it. I bet that will happen here. When its dry I and just gonna sit and rub it with some micromesh for a few hours and hope to smooth them to an acceptable level. The good news for me and cop out is there is a visible panel line that runs on this joint but its not this pronounced. Looking at it now after a break I can see I have improved it somewhat. But when you stare at something close up for hours and hours all you can see is the bad stuff. Later I will hopefully see it as part of an overall effect. The fuselage is taking forever to sand out to shape too, the seam is not true on this one at all..... As for the tiddler I am making this "cute" Blue Steel, This one I pinched from the falklands boxing of the kit as it is more accurate than the one boxed with this kit. in that the forward canards/ wings are rounded at the tip which is not right to my knowledge. This one Is pointy and it looks much better. I always can't help think the wings on this must have gone towards TSR-2 they look almost the same. Cheers Rob 1
Martian Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 Nice work! The tiddler is looking particularly good. Martin 1
robvulcan Posted March 30, 2014 Author Posted March 30, 2014 Nice work! The tiddler is looking particularly good. Martin Cheers Martin. Aye I am very happy with how the tiddler is looking. I just hope I can get the big one to look half as good. Its really fighting me at the moment. Or so it seems. Just taking a little break I have hit the point that my eyes feel like they have been put in the wrong way around. ahah. Cheers Rob
Nigel Heath Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 Rob, I am worried. I hope you are not planning to use this brush to finish your model!! Cheers, Nigel 4
robvulcan Posted March 30, 2014 Author Posted March 30, 2014 Rob, I am worried. I hope you are not planning to use this brush to finish your model!! Cheers, Nigel HAHAHAHA LOL. Well not with that one no. The green areas and smaller areas were ironically painted with a brush though lol Cheers Rob
Cookenbacher Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 Thanks for taking time out from two builds to give masking tips Rob. I'll do my absolute best to put them to good use! The intakes on the big Vulcan are gonna look great! 1
general melchett Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 Good progress Rob, if it's not too late then the ECM plates were the underside colour at the front end, (either lag or white) and then dark natural metal for the long flat sections. The small dielectric sections on the tail fin, front of the fin fillet and circular plate on top of the fuselage were tan which weathered very quickly to a dirty brown. No problem putting the tiddler on the table mate, we'll just put it with my 1/144th BC projects, Melchie 1

The intakes on the big Vulcan are gonna look great! Your welcome. People always help me and I help others who want to help themselves. Its what its all about. I have learned tons through being on here and it has helped me enormously. also increased the enjoyment and I have made some good friends too. Britmodeller rocks. No problem putting the tiddler on the table mate, we'll just put it with my 1/144th BC projects, Melchie Hi mate thanks. I have noticed there is many various colours used for radar panels on XM595 looks like it had very dark ones. So far I painted them DSG as it looked darker than the top colour lighter than the black but darker than the burnt iron of the engines. However no problem to repaint them dark silver. Metallic paint or real metals seem a PITA to decide with their tonal nature they can seem any color white to grey to black. Its Great you will allow her on the Table I did not think it would be allowed. I could bring XH535 too if you wanted but I would not want to clutter the place. Cheers Rob Right update time and still not got the wings on.... The exhausts when they fit properly are not too bad but on my they are positively repugnant. So much so I dremeled them off and made some new ones out of pens. Its actually working in my favor as the Airfix ones flare out which is not quite right for 301s. From what I can see they are supposed to but pretty straight flat and obnoxious looking rather like a double barrel shotgun. Certainly not elegant like the 101s and 201s were. Much more brutal looking which of course they were. They will still be crude and whilst its created more work for me. they might actually look more like 301s in the end. so finger crossed and micro mesh and files to the rescue. After a circular sanding and tidy up it was just a case of popping them on with some super glue gel and then blend them in. I will need a little milliput to recreate the curved fairings were they attach at the sides. Another update soon. Cheers Rob 1
robvulcan Posted March 31, 2014 Author Posted March 31, 2014 Well its update time and I have been working so much on this I am only just on my first coffee.... I am sanding sanding sanding,,, blending and swearing,,,,,, The exhausts are looking better and the ends but I am really doubting if I can get them to look perfect.. Got a seam to get rid of on all of them.. I stayed up till 1.30 am doing the intakes and they are still not perfect..... I Just hope I can do this.. The decals arrived this morning very kindly sent to my by Gary C on here who sold them to me cheap. Thanks Garry. with that its spurred me to go on. I guess Its sanding to submission day on the engines and intakes today. then at somepoint I will have to say I dont me best and get the wings on. Or its never gonna get done. A bit Crude but I guess more like 301s hey ho I tried..... and I..... Anyway.. on to the lovely little tiddler man I love this kit so much Dragon Please release more.. I have painted the ECM panels in a very suitably named paint for a Vulcan ... "Lead Beltcher" silver from Citadel. That name describes a Vulcan perfectly .. and they are very nice paints indeed. So there we go I guess I will have to try and make a display stand for this one. I shall have to take a trip to Webbs again. Cheers Rob
robvulcan Posted March 31, 2014 Author Posted March 31, 2014 Well just a quick update. After Hours of sanding aided by something more aggressive my mums Nail file and some superglue gel as a filler. I think I might be winning... Trouble is these engine are gonna be silver and I bet will show up what looks to be perfect bare to actually look like the surface of Proteus.... Oh well I will weather them then.. The intakes are still getting there too. It feels like forever but I suppose I am not really that far from painting........ Or do I lie to myself.. Here you go my attempt at some crude 301 exhausts. Not quite there but good enough for jazz. I need to polish them out now. Cheers Rob
robvulcan Posted March 31, 2014 Author Posted March 31, 2014 Well the exhausts are coming on but the intakes still need more sanding. Just need to hem in some milliput to give the corner fairing's now with a damp cotton bud. Back to the file... 1
robvulcan Posted March 31, 2014 Author Posted March 31, 2014 Well I think I am finally winning the Fight... GRRR.. Thanks to little paddles made from bits of Mircromesh pads with a cocktail stick shoved up em. Going slow and hard and letting the grit do the work. It takes an age. and I keep recoating with paint to see how its looking..... Progress is slow I guess but you get there in the end... Well If I stay up till 1.30 am again that gives me a few more hours. Lets see what I can do. Cheers Rob 1
perdu Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 looks like you're going to have these done and dustproofed on Sunday Rob Looking forrards to seeing them nice work mate b 1

dadgaddad Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 You do like a tight dealine, it seems. Here's a little something to distract you. http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234958308-avro-vulcan-b1-xa902-repair-modification-paperwork-file-195861/ 1
Nigel Heath Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 Great work all round Rob, those exhausts look the business. 1
nimrod54 Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 Keep going bud your doing a great job. The jet pipes look good and the intakes seem to be coming together too. My only advice would be, don't get too tired because that is when you can end up screwing things up. Plenty of breaks and lot's of coffee. 1

Cheers mate they are getting there now I was going to leave them as was but they had a 1mm gap that would be impossible to make round again. so I was forced to scratch build them Keep going bud your doing a great job. Gimme Shelter Posted April 1, 2014 Posted April 1, 2014 looking good still - its a shame that Airfix produced such a great kit but neglected the engine detail front and back - when I built mine I used resin aftermarket sets - hats off to you for undertaking all the extra fiddly work in this area - good luck with the remaining assembly 1
